What to Expect
PPR Mock Draft Analysis: Rounds 1-5
8/15/11
Rounds: 1-5 | 6-10 | 11-16

- PPR Scoring, 12 Teams, 16 Rounds
- Starting Lineup: 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 D/ST, 1 Flex (RB, WR, TE)

One of the best ways to prepare for your league draft is to practice. But if you don’t have 12 warm bodies handy for a mock draft, here’s the next best thing.

Recently I was assigned the 9th pick in an expert mock hosted by our friends at KFFL. So, I opened up a fresh copy of my favorite drafting tool, the Cheatsheet Compiler & Draft Buddy, and took it for a spin against 11 other respected industry types. The results were quite intriguing, and while no two leagues are the same, what took place on August 9th should give those of you in PPR leagues an idea of what to expect in your drafts over the next few weeks.

Round 1 Thoughts: A typical start for a PPR league, although I’ve seen Peterson slide as far as 1.06 behind Rice and Charles. … This group is somewhat skittish on Maurice Jones-Drew, as worries about his knee drop him to the bottom of the round. ... Frank Gore is a mild surprise at 1.10. He’ll certainly live up to this draft slot if he can stay healthy, but his injury history suggests that’s a long shot.

Round 2 Thoughts: Two QBs come off the board in this round, but it’s not the two you might expect. Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are certainly worthy fantasy QBs, but if the postion of choice is quarterback, most owners will not pass on Vick’s upside at 2.11. … Matt Forte is an RB that will consistently be drafted 4-5 slots earlier in PPR leagues—as he was here. I considered him at 2.04 but opted for Rashard Mendenhall instead.

Round 3 Thoughts: There’s an elephant in the room and I about peed my pants at the thought of getting him. As the picks kept coming in, I couldn’t believe my eyes! Could it be… will he be available when it’s my… nope. Injury concerns or not, Guru got incredible value for Michael Vick at 3.07 (two picks ahead of me), but don’t expect him to last past early Round 2 in your draft. In most cases, you’ll need to draft Vick in the first round if you want him on your roster. … Now that Mikel Leshoure is injured, you’re not going to get a bargain with Jahvid Best. Expect to pay full price especially in PPR leagues. … PPR star Wes Welker makes his appearance at 3.10, right in line with his ADP.

Round 4 Thoughts: Mark Ingram is somebody I like but am not comfortable with as an RB2. He was an RB3 for Footballguys, but you’ll need to spend a fourth-round pick to get the rookie from Alabama. … LeGarrette Blount gets devalued in PPR leagues, and rightfully so. His 5 receptions in 13 games last year scare PPR owners to death. … Notice how Jeremy Maclin is taken before DeSean Jackson—something you’ll see less of as Maclin continues to miss time with an undisclosed illness.

Round 5 Thoughts: If you want one of the “big eight” QBs (Vick, Rodgers, Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, Romo, Schaub), make sure you nab one by Round 5, otherwise you’ll be left with Roethlisberger and Eli Manning as your options in Round 7. Schaub is the last of the big eight to go at 5.09. … Ryan Torain’s stock has fallen since this mock was conducted last Tuesday (8/9). Expect Tim Hightower here at 5.11 moving forward.
