Daily Dose: Week 5
Take Care of Your Bankroll
10/2/14

By now you know the instant gratification and immediate draws of one-week fantasy football. However, there is one aspect that you absolutely need to consider. If you do not factor your bankroll into your game selection, your funds might end up being gone or severely crippled before the end of the season or even next week. We briefly touched on bankroll management in the preseason article Getting Started with Daily Fantasy Football. It is such an important topic that it is worth another mention.

If you followed this article last week and hit big on players like Lamar Miller, Antonio Brown, Steve Smith or Martellus Bennett you may have a larger account balance as you head to Week 5. Maybe a few winning weeks have given you confidence in the DFS concept. It is important to not let the early successes go to your head to the point that you overextend yourself. If you are on the other side of the equation, you do not want to chase your losses either. Exceeding your limit can come in the form of high buy-ins or too many contests. For instance, this week DraftKings has a Millionaire Maker event. It is safe to say that taking down the tournament and the $1,000,000 first place prize would be a life-changing win for most people. If you are typically a $5 tournament player or a $10 cash game player, paying the $27 to get into the contest is a considerable increase and can cripple your funds if you do not cash. Similarly, if you usually play in the $27 tournaments but this week you want more exposure to the prize and enter multiple lineups, you are probably taking on unnecessary risk. It feels like the salaries are a little softer at DraftKings this week to draw you into overextending yourself so keep a clear head as you select your games this week.

  • Minnesota (19.75) at Green Bay (27.75)
  • Chicago (21.5) at Carolina (24)
  • Cleveland (21.25) at Tennessee (23.25)
  • St. Louis (20.25) at Philadelphia (27.25)
  • Atlanta (23.25) at NY Giants (27.25)
  • Tampa Bay (19.25) at New Orleans (29.25)
  • Houston (20.25) at Dallas (26.25)
  • Buffalo (18.5) at Detroit (25.5)
  • Baltimore (22.5) at Indianapolis (26)
  • Pittsburgh (26.5) at Jacksonville (20.5)
  • Arizona (20.75) at Denver (27.75)
  • Kansas City (19) at San Francisco (25)
  • NY Jets (18.5) at San Diego (25)
  • Cincinnati (23.5) at New England (22.5)
  • Seattle (26.25) at Washington (19.25)

On bye: Miami, Oakland

Russell Wilson

Can Russell duplicate last week's performance from Eli?

Quarterbacks

Drew Brees (9,100/8,900) – There will be some people that are scared away from Brees because of his poor performance in primetime last week. Remember he is at home, where his splits are much better. He also gets to go against the Tampa defense.

Russell Wilson (8,300/7,600) – Wilson is coming off his bye and is facing a Washington defense that was scorched by Eli Manning last week.

Ben Roethlisberger (7,700/7,400) – Coming off a 314-yard 3-TD game last week, Big Ben should feast on the Jaguars defense.

Running Backs

Rashad Jennings (7,200/5,500) – Atlanta is giving up the most points to opposing running backs. Jennings had a lighter load and has had a few extra days off with the Giants playing last Thursday game. He should be well rested and ready to gash the Falcons defense. Note that he will probably be widely owned, especially at the $5,500 DraftKings price.

Chris Ivory (6,200/3,100) – While Ivory does not have the best matchup on the road at San Diego, he has been getting more carries and more catches than backfield mate Chris Johnson. Ivory is a good value especially at the $3,100 DraftKings price.

Matt Asiata (7,100/4,700) – You may remember my Week 2 article and my personal apprehensions of the Thursday night game. It is hard to ignore his matchup this week against the poor Green Bay run defense. If you are playing the Thursday game you can look to Asiata.

Bishop Sankey (5,900/3,100) – Sankey has not done much this year but the talk is that he is going to start seeing a heavier workload. He gets a good matchup this week and would be a decent tournament option.

Wide Recievers

Antonio Brown (9,000/8,100) – I know, you do not need to come here to read an article on how you should start the best wideout in the league. With how he is producing so far this year, it is hard to not find a way to get Brown in your lineup against the Jacksonville.

Jordy Nelson (8,500/7,900) – Here is another no-brainer option if you are playing in the Thursday night game. Nelson has 49 targets and 33 receptions through the first four weeks. If you do not have Brown in your cash game lineup, you should get Nelson in there.

Kelvin Benjamin (7,100/4,800) – Benjamin has had a great start to the season putting up WR1 numbers. He is still priced as a WR2 and will go against a poor Chicago defense.

Andrew Hawkins (5,300/3,500) – Hawkins is averaging 7 catches and 80 yards over his first three games. He is coming off a bye and gets to face Tennessee. He is best in the PPR format but would really pay off if he can find the endzone.

Tight Ends

Jimmy Graham (7,900/7,600) – Believe it or not Graham is a good contrarian play this week. The tight end position has become deep and with many people migrating to others listed here, you can pay up for Graham at home against Tampa Bay and he won’t be as widely owned as past weeks.

Martellus Bennett (7,300/6,000) – Bennett leads Chicago in targets and receptions this year and is the top scoring tight end to this point in the season.

Travis Kelce (5,300/3,000) – Kelce is going to be highly owned this week especially at DraftKings where he is the minimum price. He is a better cash game play than a tournament play.

Jordan Reed (5,100/3,600) – Be sure to check Reed’s injury status in this one before plugging him in your lineup. Coming off injury Reed (hamstring) has a depressed price around the industry. If he plays, he should see some volume in a game Washington figures to be battling from behind.

Defenses

Pittsburgh (5,400/3,500) – Fade Jacksonville offense.

Detroit (4,800/3,800) – A solid defense at home at a reasonable price against a new starting QB (Kyle Orton).

NY Giants (5,100/2,400) – Facing a beat up Atlanta offensive line, I might gamble with the G-Men on DraftKings.

Good luck this week!
