Cassel the "heavy favorite" to start for Vikings
Rookie Bridgewater nipping at his heels
By: Doug Orth | Jul 21 2014, 4:45 pm

Matt Cassel, a 10th-year veteran with 68 NFL starts, is the heavy favorite to start entering camp after re-signing on a two-year, $10.5 million contract in March. But Teddy Bridgewater got some first-team reps during offseason practices and acquitted himself well. The Vikings report to camp Thursday, but Bridgewater arrived early to work with teammate Kyle Rudolph, among others, at Arizona Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald's annual workouts at the University of Minnesota. FFToday's Take: HC Mike Zimmer has said he won't name a starter early in camp. Cassel may be a better fit for OC Norv Turner's vertical-based offense and the presumptive Week 1 starter, but Bridgewater is a good bet to take over the starting job at some point during the season because he is a much better decision-maker. With the plethora of weapons in Minnesota and Turner calling the shots, the winner of this race is well-positioned to be a solid QB2 in fantasy.
