|Considered an injury risk heading into his third year in the league in 2011, Stafford proved his doubters wrong by putting together a Pro Bowl quality season (although he miraculously wasnít named to the Pro Bowl) by throwing for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns. With the Lions struggling to run the ball, Stafford led a high flying passing attack that threw the ball 663 times and attempted more passing plays than any team in the league. Perhaps most impressively, Stafford was able to produce in the clutch, leading the Lions to big comeback wins over the Cowboys, the Vikings and the Raiders in helping Detroit secure their first playoff spot in more than a decade. If you were looking for consistency, Stafford provided that too by registering fewer than 19 fantasy points just once. Thatís what happens when you throw for multiple touchdowns 12 times, have eight 300-yard passing games and fail to throw for 250 yards just four times. Whatís in store for 2012? Provided Stafford remains healthy, and it is worth noting that four shoulder injuries caused him to miss 19 of his first 32 games in the league, he should finish the season as a top five fantasy quarterback. With Calvin Johnson in the fold and Titus Young expected to build on his impressive rookie season, Stafford has explosive weapons at wide receiver as well as a solid tight end in Brandon Pettigrew, not to mention perhaps a shiny new toy in 2nd round pick Ryan Broyles. While Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady need to be the first quarterbacks off the board, you could make a strong argument that Stafford needs to go number three.

Lions' QB recovering from a rib injury
|Less than a week after giving some in the Detroit Lions organization a scare with his rib injury, Matthew Stafford is on track to play in Sunday's home opener against the Denver Broncos (8:30 p.m., NBC). Stafford has practiced in full the last two days, and Lions coach Jim Caldwell said his quarterback has gone about the week in normal fashion. "I think, on a daily basis, he demonstrates his desire to be out there and rolling along," Caldwell said. "He's an unusual guy in that respect, but just in terms of how he's gone about the week, in terms of his preparation and things of that nature, it's been on par with the way in which he prepares. But every week's a little different challenge and, certainly, this week is challenging for him." Stafford took eight hits and was sacked once in the Lions' 26-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last weekend and was so beaten up, he needed X rays on his ribs and chest after the game. FF Today's Take: Despite putting up a decent stat line last week, Stafford player fairly conservatively, opting for short passes to pick up yards. It lead some to speculate that his rib and chest injuries were preventing him from throwing the long ball. Things don't get any easier for Stafford this week, facing the top-ranked pass defense thus far in 2015 in the Denver Broncos.

Detroit expecting QB to play despite rib injury
|ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -- Matthew Stafford took snaps and threw at practice as if it was just another day at work. It appears that his starting streak is safe. The Detroit Lions quarterback said he felt ''pretty good'' Wednesday before going out on the field and looking healthy enough to participate as usual during the parts of practice open to reporters. He was able to finish practice with his injured ribs.
FF Today's Take: Although Stafford has taken a few hits this year, he doesn't appear to be in any danger of missing Detroit's Week 3 date with the Broncos. Denver has given opposing quarterbacks fits as evidenced by their seven sacks in two games. The match up and chance of re-injury should be considered before plugging Stafford into your starting lineup on Sunday.
