2012 Outlook
After struggling in 2010 to build upon his impressive work as a rookie, Wells put together a career-year in 2011 as he emerged as a workhorse back for the Cardinals. The trade of Tim Hightower to the Redskins and rookie 2nd round pick Ryan Williams’ season ending injury in the preseason left Wells to carry the load. Despite struggling with a knee injury in Week 6 and missing two games, Wells ran for 1,047 yards and ten touchdowns on 245 carries, finishing the season as the 17th ranked fantasy running back. Consistency was an issue as he ran for 62 yards or less in eight games and amassed 60.6 of his 169.9 fantasy points in just two games. Wells entered training camp on the PUP list due to his slow recovery from off-season knee surgery but the team has indicated that they expect him to be ready for Week 1. The condition of his knees and Williams’ ability to recovery from a torn patella tendon are the two risks of Wells not repeating his strong performance from last season. However, the Cardinals failed to address the running back position in the off-season so we can assume that they are confident in his recovery. Consider Wells a high-end RB3 or low-end RB2 with upside in 2012 and drop him lower in PPR leagues due to his lack of ability as a receiver (just 27 receptions in three seasons).

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Beanie Wells, Steelers don't ink deal     -- Fri Mar 15 3:35 pm --

Pittsburgh likely scared off by RB's knee injury
When the Arizona Cardinals released Beanie Wells last weekend, it was reportedly in part because they were not optimistic about the state of his right knee. The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted Wells for a Friday visit, but a signing isn't likely to be forthcoming. One source tells the Post-Gazette that Wells was found to have a "bad wheel." Although Wells did miss lose half of the 2012 season to a turf toe injury, it's a good bet that the knee is the "wheel" in question. Still just 24 years old, Wells has plenty of time to salvage what has been a disappointing career since being drafted 31st overall in 2009. A signing may be on hold, though, until his troublesome knee shows signs of returning to full health later in the offseason. (NFL.com)

FF Today's Take: Knee injuries are a running back's worst nightmare, and Wells could be in tough to find a team willing to take on the risky proposition of signing him. As for the Steelers, their backfield remains a bit of a question mark. They still have Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman, but it should come as no surprise if Pittsburgh targets a running back in one of the first few rounds at the upcoming draft.
Cardinals release Beanie Wells     -- Mon Mar 11 4:20 pm --

LaRod Stephens-Howling likely to depart in free agency
Starting running back Beanie Wells was released on Monday, and backup LaRod Stephens-Howling is likely to land elsewhere in free agency. Wells was due a roster bonus of $1.3 this spring and scheduled to make $1.157 million in salary. (Arizona REpublic)

FF Today's Take: Wells never gained much traction in Arizona. He suffered numerous injuries and played in only eight games last season. Look for Arizona to put the full court press on Reggie Bush once free agency opens tomorrow. Wells' value is limited due to his stone-hands but will find a job, likely in a committee role.
