Who says playing second fiddle to the most productive tight end in the league makes you a second fiddle fantasy option at the position? That certainly isn’t the case with Hernandez, who finished the 2011 season as the 3rd ranked fantasy tight end with 910 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in just 14 games. With an offense as prolific as the Patriots, there are more than enough targets to make Hernandez a solid fantasy option and that isn’t expected to change in 2012. While many fantasy prognosticators have Hernandez suffering a decline in his production in 2012 based on free agent wide receiver Brandon Lloyd gobbling up some of his targets, expect Hernandez will get at least as many targets as the 113 he had last season with no decline in his production. He can be regarded as the 3rd ranked fantasy tight end this season and no lower than 6th.
Comment: Hernandez is one of the very few that will receive a handful of carries (5 for 45 yds last season) from the Tight End position.

 Hernandez had shoulder surgery -- Tue Apr 16 11:00 am --
Patriots tight end should be ready for training camp | Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez had shoulder surgery about two weeks ago but will be ready for the start of training camp in July, a league source said. The surgery, which a source said was a minor scope, will keep Hernandez out of off-season practices. He could be ready for the June mini-camp, but that's a ways off. (Boston Globe)
FF Today's Take: Hernandez owners shouldn't panic as it appears he will be in no danger of missing the start of the season. It should be noted however, that Hernandez has been somewhat injury-prone, missing games in each season of his three-year career... including six games last season.

Pats top WR headed elsewhere | New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has no plans to re-sign with the team before first testing the free-agent market next week, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Unrestricted free agents can officially sign with other teams starting Tuesday. Welker, 31, received the Patriots' franchise tag last offseason but New England didn't issue a franchise tender to any player for the 2013 season before this past Monday's deadline. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: It's common knowledge that Tom Brady and the Patriots' run a pass-heavy offense. Though tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez receive many of Brady's targets, management will need to find someone to fill Welker's role as a quick, sure-handed receiver, especially with Brandon Lloyd rumored to be on his way out as well.
