|Little Andrew Hawkins making a big impression -- Thu Jun 12 5:20 pm --|
Ex-Bengal WR drawing praise from coaches and players
|Andrew Hawkins has been a star of the offseason for the Browns. He was signed away from the Bengals as a restricted free agent for four years and $13.6 million and has made an immediate impact. With Josh Gordon facing a possible suspension and several other receivers signing late or dealing with injuries, Hawkins has been the stabilizing force among the wideouts.
“He’s been one of our most consistent guys through spring,” coach Mike Pettine said. “Comes out here, he’s one of the hardest workers." (The Chronicle-Telegram)|
FF Today's Take: At 5-7 and 180 pounds, Hawkins is ideally suited for the slot, although he is probably going to get every chance to be an every-down player in Cleveland in 2014 because he is one of the few Browns not named Josh Gordon who can get deep. With Gordon likely to miss a significant part of the season, don't be surprised if "Baby Hawk" leads the wide receivers - and maybe the team - in receptions.
|WR Josh Gordon in trouble again -- Sat May 31 7:10 pm --|
Caught for speeding; passenger cited for possession of marjuana
|Already in trouble with the NFL for a reported failed drug test, Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon was issued a speeding ticket over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. According to the citation, Gordon's 2014 grey Mercedes-Benz SUV was clocked going 74 miles an hour in a 60-mile-per-hour zone on May 25. Gordon's passenger was issued a citation for possession of marijuana in an amount under 200 grams during the traffic stop. (WKYC)|
FF Today's Take: Gordon is quickly digging himself a deep hole, one in which he may not be able to get out of with his series of poor off-field decisions. Gordon, as many will remember from draft weekend, is already subject to an indefinite suspension for a failed drug test and missed the Browns' first two games last season because of a drug-related suspension. The Browns' top three receivers after Gordon are Miles Austin, Earl Bennett and Andrew Hawkins.
|Browns shakeup wide receiver corps -- Fri May 16 7:00 am --|
Sign Austin, Bennett, release Little
|The three starting receivers from last season might all be out for 2014: Little and Davone Bess have been released and Josh Gordon is facing an indefinite suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy for at least the third time. In their place are veterans Miles Austin and Earl Bennett, who were signed as free agents on Thursday, and Andrew Hawkins and Nate Burleson, who were signed in March and April, respectively. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)|
FF Today's Take: Little was a 2nd-round pick in 2011 but had a case of the dropsies during his time in Cleveland. Austin finds himself with a golden opportunity as the Browns have a shaky depth chart at wide receiver. However, Austin has been plagued during his career with hamstring injuries and had very little interest as a free agent this off-season. He'll be on the WR5 radar with extreme injury risk.
