|Brock Osweiler headed to Houston -- Wed Mar 9 3:05 pm --|
Broncos in dire need of quarterback
|I'm told QB Brock Osweiler has agreed to a deal in principle with the Houston Texans. (Rand Getlin on Twitter)|
FF Today's Take: The moves seems like a win for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins as Osweiler has shown the ability to throw the deep ball however it remains to be seen just how good of quarterback Osweiler can be. He's played in 19 games in four years with mixed results but does have one of the best young weapons in the game at his disposal. Another outside or tight end weapon to go along with a stud running back (Lamar Miller?) would help setup Osweiler for success.
|Peyton Manning calling it a career -- Sun Mar 6 10:26 am --|
18 seasons and two Super Bowl victories
|Peyton Manning's Super Bowl 50 victory over the Carolina Panthers was indeed his last rodeo.
The five-time NFL MVP is retiring, the Denver Broncos announced Sunday. The team will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. ET Monday for Manning to discuss his stepping away from the game after 18 seasons and two Super Bowl victories.
FF Today's Take: A lock for the Hall of Fame, Manning will go down as one of the great quarterbacks in NFL history. He's the all-time leader in passing touchdowns (539) and passing yards (71,940). On the business side, Manning's retirement clears $19 million in cap room and makes free agent Brock Osweiler the likely starting quarterback in Denver for 2016, assuming they can sign him.
|Peyton not ready to make retirement decision -- Mon Feb 8 7:00 am --|
Will wait a few weeks before making an announcement
|Fresh off the Denver Broncos' victory in Super Bowl 50, quarterback Peyton Manning tells TODAY he's going to enjoy his victory for a few weeks before deciding whether he will continue his career. "I'll keep doing it for a few more weeks, and then, at the appropriate time, I think I'll make a decision," Manning said. "I have to tell you, though, I'm very much at peace with it." (Today.com)|
FF Today's Take: With another Super Bowl victory under his belt it would be a shock if Manning didn't hang it up. His skills have been in obvious decline the last two seasons and its highly unlikely he'll get another opportunity to go out on top. Brock Osweiler is the favorite to be the Broncos starting quarterback in 2016.
|Peyton has told friends he intends to retire -- Mon Feb 1 7:40 pm --|
Has yet to tip his hand publicly, however
|In a not-so-private moment, Broncos QB Peyton Manning told Patriots HC Bill Belichick that 2015 may be Peyton’s last rodeo. In much more private moments, Manning reportedly has been more definitive.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Manning has told close friends that he’ll retire after Super Bowl 50. (Pro Football Talk)|
FF Today's Take: This doesn't qualify as breaking news, but rather another reminder that one of the all-time greats will probably be playing his last game on Sunday. The 18-year veteran will turn 40 next month and his body appears to be breaking down after an injury-plagued season in 2016. Win or lose in Super Bowl 50, it will likely mark the end of the road for the five-time NFL MVP. As such, one of Denver's top offseason priorities will likely be locking up Brock Osweiler long-term.
