Hyde draws praise for work ethic, smarts     -- Thu Jul 31 5:30 pm --

Harbaugh compares rookie to Frank Gore
San Francisco HC Jim Harbaugh does not like to make comparisons. He often says someone gets diminished when two players are compared and contrasted. But, in this instance Harbaugh, made an exception. He praised running backs Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde in similar terms. Harbaugh spoke glowingly about Gore’s work ethic and understanding of the game. “Carlos gets football, understands football,” Harbaugh said, citing Roman. “It’s natural for him to understand the game, similar to Frank Gore. And we're seeing those things, and both are very good signs and bode well for us.” (CSN Bay Area)

FF Today's Take: This is a big step up for Hyde, whose work ethic was questioned up until last season at Ohio State. The second-round rookie is the frontrunner to win the backup job with Kendall Hunter out for the season and Marcus Lattimore being treated with kid gloves. Gore has been of an ironman since Harbaugh's arrival, but the 31-year-old showed signs of decline last season, so Hyde has a chance at redraft value this year.
Injury LaMichael James out with dislocated elbow     -- Sun Jul 27 8:00 pm --

Expected to miss four weeks
Running back LaMichael James was carted off the field Sunday after he suffered an injury to his left arm early in practice. NFL Network reported that James suffered a dislocated elbow and that he is expected to miss a month or so. (San Jose Mercury News)

FF Today's Take: The 49ers running back corps has taken a beating the last couple days. Kendall Hunter (ACL) will miss the entire season and now it appears James will miss a good chunk of training camp. Frank Gore and rookie Carlos Hyde continue to be the fantasy running backs to own in San Francisco with Marcus Lattimore (knee) being a wildcard. Lattimore remains on the non-football-injury list.
Injury Kendall Hunter tears ACL, out for the season     -- Sat Jul 26 12:45 pm --

Injured during non-contact drill
Running back Kendall Hunter tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Friday at practice, the team confirmed Saturday morning. Candidates to fill the 49ers’ No. 2 tailback job are LaMichael James, Carlos Hyde, Jewell Hampton and Marcus Lattimore, who’s on the non-football-injury list but has been doing conditioning drills on a side field in camp. (San Jose Mercury News)

FF Today's Take: Hunter is a key part to the 49ers offense, able to spell Frank Gore on early downs as well as play on third downs in a receiving role. Hyde will be the favorite to become the No.2 running back but this injury might breathe some life into LaMichael James who had been rumored to be on the outs in San Francisco. Hunter averaged 80.5 touches the last two seasons.
Injury Lattimore placed on non-football injury list     -- Thu Jul 17 7:25 pm --

RB was cleared for full practice in offseason
RB Marcus Lattimore, who was cleared to resume full practice in the offseason, was one of six players declared on the non-football injury list to open training camp. The 49ers’ rookies reported to training camp on Wednesday. Lattimore was allowed to report with the rookies because he does not have an accrued year of NFL service after spending his rookie season on the NFI list due to a knee injury he sustained during his final season at South Carolina. (CSN Bay Area)

FF Today's Take: The NFI and physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) lists are procedural lists from which a player can be removed at any time to begin practice, so the Niners could just be playing it safe with Lattimore. However, it would have been a more positive sign to begin camp without limitations. Rookie Carlos Hyde continues to enjoy a clear lead over Lattimore in the race to be Frank Gore's handcuff.
