2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Johnson’s hamstring injury in Week 4 torpedoed the hopes of many fantasy owners as one of fantasy’s top rated wide receivers went on to finish the year with the lowest level of production of his career. By season’s end, Johnson had appeared in just seven games, amassing 33 receptions for 492 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 11.2 fantasy points per game, the third worst performance of his nine-year career. Johnson will be 31 years old when the season starts and with 12 missed games over the past two seasons, there are legitimate concerns as to whether he can remain healthy for an entire year. Adding to those concerns is the arthroscopic surgery on his knee that he underwent in May. While his health is up for debate, Johnson’s talent remains top-notch and he will eat up plenty of targets in Houston’s passing attacked with no clear-cut starter opposite him and Owen Daniels seemingly in decline. Offsetting those positives is the fact the Texans are clearly a run first team. AJ is worthy of being drafted as a mid to lower tier WR1 in 2012 but the risk of grabbing him has never been higher.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Foster, Johnson return to practice for Texans     -- Wed Aug 13 10:45 am --

Both battling hamstring injuries
The Texans had some familiar faces back on Wednesday morning. Inside linebacker Brian Cushing returned to the active roster off the physically unable to perform list. Running back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson also returned to practice after missing two weeks due to hamstring injuries. (ESPN)

FF Today's Take: The Texans have been hush-hush about the true nature of Foster's injury but it's expected to be of the hamstring variety. No word yet on if either Foster or Johnson will play in Houston's second preseason game against the Falcons on Saturday.
Injury HOU hopeful Foster can play return Saturday     -- Mon Aug 11 4:20 pm --

Team optimistic about Andre Johson's return as well
Arian Foster (hamstring) and Andre Johnson (hamstring) again missed practice Monday. But the duo put in hard work on a side field while rehabbing from injuries and coach Bill O’Brien said he’s hopeful they can play Saturday against Atlanta at NRG Stadium. “I’ve spoken to both those guys. They’re doing better,” O’Brien said. “It’s a long season and our trainers are doing a great job with them. But it seems like they’ve improved and hopefully they can do something this week.” (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: As Houston showed in its preseason opener, its offense doesn't stand much of a chance without its two stars. Foster is very much a risk-reward RB2 that is coming off season-ending back surgery and has dealt with hamstring issues before. His owners would be wise to make a move for Jonathan Grimes just in case of a setback. Johnson's value figures to take a slight hit with Ryan Fitzpatrick as his quarterback, but he is still more than a serviceable fantasy WR2 at age 33.
Injury Foster, Johnson remain out of practice     -- Tue Aug 5 11:45 am --

Neither Texans' star has been ruled out against Arizona
Andre Johnson, Arian Foster, Brian Cushing, Jadeveon Clowney, Brandon Brooks, Johnathan Joseph and Louis Nix III were among those inactive during the 10th day of training camp. Texans coach Bill O’Brien said the team hasn’t officially ruled anyone out yet for the team’s preseason debut Saturday at Arizona. (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: Johnson (hamstring) has been out of practice since July 28th while the details of Foster's injury remain unclear. Foster admitted yesterday that he considered retirement after last season's back injury. His injury risk continues to rise in the minds of fantasy owners and only a return to the practice field in the coming days will stop his expected ADP slide.
Injury Foster, Johnson out with "minor" injuries     -- Tue Jul 29 1:00 pm --

Texans missing top two offensive weapons
It took just three days for injuries to limit the Texans’ offense. Veteran wide receiver Andre Johnson tweaked his right hamstring Monday during practice, while star running back Arian Foster was held out of action. Coach Bill O’Brien said both injuries were minor. The team has not revealed what is affecting Foster, who has not spoken with the media since offseason workouts began and again denied an interview request Monday. (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: This isn't much of a surprise. Foster has dealt with nagging injuries for the past couple years and its widely known that players missing off-season work tend to find themselves injured during camp at an increased rate. Just how "minor" these injuries are remains to be seen.
Andre Johnson reports to training camp     -- Fri Jul 25 7:10 am --

WR missed OTAs and minicamp
Andre Johnson has reported for the Texans’ 2014 training camp. Despite spending the last two months threatening to hold out, Johnson has arrived at NRG Stadium and is expected to begin practicing Saturday morning. Veterans are due to report Friday and are scheduled to begin meeting with the media at 10:30 a.m. (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: Johnson has been disgruntled at the prospect of going through another rebuilding season in Houston even suggesting he'd like to be traded. He still has low-end WR1 value even with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB and is bargain priced with an ADP hovering around the back-end of round four as the 18th wide receiver off the board.
Andre Johnson wants out of Houston     -- Thu Jul 10 12:10 pm --

Informs team he'd like to be traded
Andre Johnson has informed the Texans he wants to play for another team in 2014, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. According to the report, four teams have shown interest in trading for Johnson, who is the Texans’ all-time receiving leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns. (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: Johnson's displeasure with the direction of the team has been well documented over the last couple months. He skipped the offseason workouts and lost a $1 million bonus in the process. Johnson (33) is scheduled to make $10 million this season in Houston.
Andre Johnson won't attend mandatory minicamp     -- Mon Jun 16 8:30 am --

Texans wideout missed all OTAs
Veteran wide receiver Andre Johnson won’t attend the Texans’ mandatory minicamp Tuesday through Thursday, his adviser and uncle Andre Melton said Monday. While Johnson’s absence was expected, Melton’s comments confirmed the seven-time Pro Bowler remains at odds with the Texans and there’s no immediate end in sight to the stalemate. “Right now, that’s all that he can do,” Melton said. “We’ve done what we can do, so we’re just sitting there waiting.” (Houston Chronicle)

FF Today's Take: Uncle Andre went on to say “We’ll evaluate it in a month or so and see what’s going on” so it doesn't appear that Johnson will report to the team anytime soon. Johnson is set to make $10 mllion in base salary this season but the Texans shaky footing at quarterback doesn't give Johnson optimism about the team making a playoff run.
Andre Johnson skips first day of OTAs     -- Tue May 27 2:35 pm --

WR still undecided about his future, direction of team
Andre Johnson, just as he said wouldn’t, didn’t show up at the Houston Texans first organized team activities of 2014. CBS Radio reports that Johnson has only missed training with the Texans one other time since his draft in 2003 when he held out for contract reasons for a few days. In mid-May, Johnson told a group of reporters that he wonders if the Texans organization is still the place for him to be. He also did not attend the team's mini-camp a few weeks ago, although he was in Houston. (KHOU)

FF Today's Take: Johnson has been the consummate pro for 12 years, but is less than pleased that Houston didn't make more of an effort to secure a more highly-touted quarterback this offseason. Johnson is unlikely to get traded even if he demands one because doing so would leave the Texans with nearly $12 M of dead money on their cap. Expect Johnson to return and maintain his status as a top 10-15 fantasy receiver with either Ryan Fitzpatrick or rookie Tom Savage.
