2016 Outlook
Depth Chart
Romo put together a strong 2011 season after missing ten games in 2010 due to a broken collarbone. He topped 4,000 passing yards for the third time with 4,184 yards and threw for 31 touchdowns, the second highest total of his career. The truth is that Romo may have had the best year of his career last season as he continued to play well despite missing Miles Austin for six weeks, Jason Witten struggling somewhat down the stretch and Dez Bryant failing to register a breakout season in his second year in the league. Part of Romoís success was based on the chemistry he had with Laurent Robinson, the teamís third wide receiver who signed with Jacksonville in the offseason. Itís anybodyís guess who will attempt to replace that production in 2012 but the odds are that none of the candidates will come closing to matching Robinsonís 858 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. While Romoís statistics from last season would have been good enough to make him a top five fantasy quarterback a few years ago, he finished as the 8th ranked player at his position. There is little reason to suggest that he will improve on that ranking in 2012. Consider him a low end QB1.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Tony Romo (back) timetable still uncertain     -- Tue Aug 30 11:16 am --

Cowboys unsure if QB will return
According to Todd Archer of ESPN, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are uncertain how much time Tony Romo will miss with the compression fracture in his back. (ESPN)

FF Today's Take: Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas "I don't know and don't know that anybody does. But it's quite a range there, four to six, six to eight, eight to (10)." Of course, HC Jason Garrett has yet to even rule Romo out of the season opener against the New York Giants, but that's probably just wishful thinking. Romo isn't worth selecting as anything but a high-upside, third QB flier as the last pick in redrafts. For now, Dak Prescott appears to be the guy generating the most excitement, even if it's pure speculation based on a few promising series in preseason.
Injury Tony Romo will play Friday, Elliott to sit     -- Wed Aug 17 5:37 pm --

Dallas looking to give their starting QB a series or two
Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones announced Wednesday that starting quarterback Tony Romo will play a series or two in Friday's preseason tilt with the Dolphins, per Newy Scruggs of NBC Sports Radio. Jones also told Scruggs that rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott will not play against the Dolphins. The first-round pick is back at practice, but the team will play it safe with his recently tweaked hamstring. (NFL.com)

FF Today's Take: Dallas is being very cautious with Tony Romo considering his injury history and importance to the team's success. He remains a low risk fantasy QB entering the year, but he is clearly past his prime and carries a lot of injury risk to be trusted as anything more than a backup. Meanwhile, Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) has already returned to practice so the decision to not play him seems to be more of a precaution than a sign of trouble.
Jerry Jones all in on Dak Prescott as backup     -- Tue Aug 16 9:10 am --

Cowboys owner won't "deter progress" by adding another QB
After watching Dak Prescott -- the team's fourth-round pick from Mississippi State -- complete 10 of 12 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns, with a quarterback rating of 154.5., Jerry Jones is ready to close the door on bringing in a veteran to back up starter Tony Romo. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

FF Today's Take: We agree with Jones that while Prescott "is a long way from Canton," getting behind the rookie and letting him learn from Romo could be a smart move. Prescott would need an injury from Romo to make any kind of fantasy mark, but he's a much more valuable fantasy commodity than any of the Cowboys' backups in the past few years.
Injury Wade Wilson: Tony Romo experiencing back stiffness     -- Tue Aug 2 12:50 pm --

Cowboys hopes, WR stats pinned to QB's health
Jon Machota on Twitter: "Cowboys QB coach Wade Wilson said Tony Romo has been experiencing some back stiffness" (Twitter)

FF Today's Take: We're once again reminded that Romo has had serious back problems during his career in addition to the collarbone injuries which ended last season. The 36-year-old obviously carries more injury risk than most other quarterbacks, and his upside continues to plummet. More than anything else, his health will have a direct effect on the team's record and the stats of the other skill positions in the Cowboys offense. Beware.
