2015 Outlook

The world likes its shiny new toys and there is no better example of that than witnessing Roddy White’s perceived fantasy value slide heading into the 2012 season. With the Falcons having unloaded a pile of picks in order to move up in the 2011 draft in order to draft Julio Jones and having seen his strong performance as a rookie, a large portion of the fantasy world seems set on him surpassing White to become the Falcons leading receiver in 2012. Not so fast, folks. Let’s check White’s resume over the past five seasons. Five consecutive seasons with at least 83 receptions and at least 1,153 yards. Two seasons with at least 100 receptions. Two seasons with double-digit touchdowns. Two seasons with at least 1,382 receiving yards. Twenty-nine touchdowns over the past three years. Two consecutive seasons with a league-leading 179 targets. Maybe it’s the age? Nah, he’s 30. While Jones is likely to warrant more looks in 2012 (he averaged less than six targets per game in 2011), the Falcons have said they planned on passing more this season and tight end Tony Gonzalez could end up with fewer looks given his decline over the past few years. In 2012, expect White’s production to approach his 100-reception, 1,296-yard, eight-touchdown performance from 2011. That would be good enough to make him a top three fantasy wide receiver.

Injury Roddy White to have minor elbow surgery     -- Sun Aug 23 8:00 pm --

Expected to be ready for Week 1
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will have minor surgery on his right elbow Monday but will not miss the Sept. 14 season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, coach Dan Quinn said Sunday. "He'll certainly be back for Week 1," Quinn said. (ESPN)

FF Today's Take: White missed Friday's preseason game as the injury flared up on him Thursday. This will mean more reps for Leonard Hankerson while White recovers and should push White's ADP (8.09) down in re-draft leagues. White missed two games last year (hamstring, ankle) and had his knee drained back in June. At 33-years old, he's injury risk is something fantasy owners should be aware of.
Falcons pleased with Hankerson     -- Thu Jul 23 6:10 pm --

WR played under new OC Kyle Shanahan in Washington
Opposite Julio Jones, the coaches really like newcomer Leonard Hankerson based on his strong offseason. Hankerson played in Shanahan's system while in Washington and appears to be healthy coming off a gruesome left knee injury in 2013. But Hankerson's emergence doesn't necessarily move Roddy White aside. It simply means the veteran White has to have a strong training camp and show the left knee injury that has plagued him won't be a lingering issue. (ESPN)

FF Today's Take: It sounds as though the beat writer believes White and Hankerson could end up battling for a starting spot opposite Jones. In all likelihood, however, Hankerson will probably end up being White's handcuff that could get some run if the 33-year-old's body continues to break down like it has in the lat two years. It's likely much ado about nothing, but a note to file away should White struggle out of the gate in 2015.
