2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Davis had a sleepy 2011 campaign before turning into an absolute beast in the playoffs and nearly helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl. After a modest regular season with 67 receptions for 792 yards and six touchdowns that saw him finish as the 8th ranked fantasy tight end, Davis turned in a pair of dominant performances against the Saints and Giants in the playoffs, catching 10 passes for 292 yards and four touchdowns. Which Davis will fantasy owners get in 2012? While Davis is easily the most talented 49ers receiving option and capable of topping 1,000 yards and hitting double digit touchdowns, the teamís conservative offensive approach under head coach Jim Harbaugh make that unlikely to happen. Of course, Davis could turn in a solid year given that this is his second year in Harbaughís offensive system. It is also possible that Davis will be overvalued on draft day based on his wonderful playoff performance. He rates as a mid-tier fantasy tight end in 2012, one with a huge upside and little risk.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Vernon Davis unsure if he'll play Monday night     -- Sat Oct 11 10:00 pm --

No setbacks in practice
Tight end Vernon Davis made it through practice Saturday, the third straight day he did so without any setback from a back injury he suffered two games ago. ďI donít feel like Iím where I need to be at the moment,Ē Davis said Saturday, Ēbut Iím getting there.Ē He said he will huddle with the head athletic trainer on Sunday and decide whether he is healthy enough to play against the St. Louis Rams on Monday night. (San Francisco Mercury News)

FF Today's Take: Vance McDonald and Derek Carrier would fill-in if Davis doesn't play. The fact that Davis didn't have any setbacks this week is a good sign, but he is no sure thing to suit up Monday night and we may not know his status before the early games kick off today.
Injury McDonald, Carrier to handle TE duties for 49ers     -- Sat Oct 4 7:00 am --

Vernon Davis misses practice all week
Tight end Vernon Davis, right offensive tackle Anthony Davis and cornerback Tramaine Brock are not at practice Friday. Fortunately for the 49ers, backup tight end Vance McDonald (knee) is at practice for the third straight day. Itís likely that McDonald and Derek Carrier are going to get the bulk of the action at tight end Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. (San Jose Mercury News)

FF Today's Take: Davis hasn't officially been ruled out but he's a candidate for the Inactive list after not practicing at all this week. Neither Carrier or McDonald will be recommended fantasy plays against the Chiefs.
Injury Vernon Davis optimistic he will return Week 4     -- Tue Sep 23 4:00 pm --

"It's going to be a great week for me"
Vernon Davis' crutches were gone, and so was his limp, as he looked ready Tuesday to return to a 49ers team that historically can't win without him. An ankle injury kept the typically durable Davis out of last Sunday's 23-14 collapse at Arizona. (San Jose Mercury News)

FF Today's Take: The 49ers waived practice squad tight end Asante Cleveland which is good sign that Davis and/or Vance McDonald (knee) will be available in Week 4.
Injury Not looking good for TE Vernon Davis     -- Sun Sep 21 9:00 am --

Ankle injury
Itís doubtful 49ers star TE Vernon Davis (bruised ankle) will play today vs. #Cardinals Iím told. He was on crutches until Thursday. (Ian Rapaport via Twitter)

FF Today's Take: This has been the feeling all along this week. With Davis out and backup TE Vance McDonald battling a knee injury, third-string tight end Derek Carrier will likely draw the start and be a TE2 in Week 3.
Injury Vernon Davis still on crutches     -- Wed Sep 17 4:46 pm --

Deep ankle bruise
The 49ers began practice today with just one healthy tight end from their 53-man roster, Derek Carrier. The other two, Vernon Davis (ankle) and Vance McDonald (knee), were working out in the teamís weight room. Davis emerged using the same crutches he was seen using after Sundayís loss to the Bears. Earlier in the day, Jim Harbaugh said the team ďdodged a bulletĒ with Davisí injury, which occurred when he was tackled awkwardly from behind in the fourth quarter. Still, itís unknown whether the teamís top tight end will be ready in time for Sundayís game against Arizona. He has a deep bruise on his ankle, a source said. (Sacremento Bee)

FF Today's Take: It's still possible that Davis plays this weekend so fantasy owners should keep a close eye on the final practice reports this week before making any changes to their lineup. Meanwhile, Davis' backup, Vance McDonald, is also dealing with a knee injury that may keep him out this week. Derek Carrier was inserted late in the game Sunday night and could be in line for considerable work if the 49ers' other options are unable to suit up for Week 3.
Injury Vernon Davis on crutches, ankle injury     -- Mon Sep 15 9:30 am --

MRI expected today
Tight end Vernon Davis sat out the final 10 minutes of the 49ersí 28-20 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday night with an ankle injury. Afterward, Davis was seen on crutches in the 49ersí locker room. The severity of his sprain is not known. (CSNBayArea.com)

FF Today's Take: Backup tight end Vance McDonald injured his knee in the first half and was limited the rest of the game. Derek Carrier filled in with 3 catches for 41 yards.
