|As a football fan, you have to love Jason Avant. The guy has climbed his way up the food chain and improved every year that he has been in the league, seeing his receptions increase every year for six years. The 2006 4th round pick willingly goes across the middle and that ability helped him set career highs in receptions with 52 and yards with 679 last season. Unfortunately, the one area where he hasnít showed much progress is in the red zone. Avant has found the end zone just 10 times in his six-year career, including once in 2011. With Riley Cooper nipping at his heels and the Eagles high on rookie 6th round pick Marvin McNutt, Avant will be hard-pressed to keep his run of increasing productivity going in 2012.
|Panthers sign another veteran receiver -- Mon Apr 7 6:10 pm --|
Carolina trying to rebuild wide receiver corps
|The Panthers have signed free agent wideout Jason Avant to a one-year contract, the team announced Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Avant becomes the third free agent receiver to sign with the Panthers, joining former Steelers red-zone specialist Jerricho Cotchery and ex-Tampa Bay wideout Tiquan Underwood. (Charlotte Observer)|
FF Today's Take: Despite the acquisitions, the Panthers are still searching for a viable No.1 wideout and it's likely given the pool of receivers left in free agency they won't have one in 2014. Carolina will no doubt be searching for wideouts in the upcoming draft and will rely even more on the running game (if that's possible), in 2014.
|Eagles release Jason Avant -- Tue Mar 4 3:00 pm --|
Save over $3 million against the cap
|The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran wide receiver Jason Avant. Avant, 30, has spent his entire eight-year career with Philadelphia and developed into a reliable receiver for the Eagles. The 6-foot Avant had 38 catches for 447 yards and two touchdowns last season. (ESPN)|
FF Today's Take: The Eagles have re-signed Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin this off-season and this move saves over $3 million against the cap in 2014. Avant will look to sign with a team that needs a veteran leader in the receiving corps. His fantasy value is hovering in WR5 territory at best.
