Outlook: Smith appeared to be the Lions answer at the running back position after a solid rookie season in 2008. But he sputtered last year, was ineffective at times, and did not provide many big plays. The Lions traded up to take Jahvid Best at the back end of the first-round, so he figures to get an opportunity to play ahead of Smith. In addition, Smith is recovering from a knee injury suffered in Week 14 and may not be ready on opening day. Once healthy, Smith figures to rotate in and get the goal-line work. He is worth taking a flier on in the later rounds of most leagues, but avoid reaching for a player recovering from injury, particularly when their team has drafted a player in the early rounds to replace them.
Comment:Smith appears to be making strides in his recovery from knee surgery however he will have to share carries with rookie Jahvid Best upon his return.
Best to be merely a committee RB?-- Thu Jul 15 6:00 pm -- Speculation that rookie will be used in Reggie Bush role
RB Jahvid Best carried the bulk of the load at California but never made it through a full season healthy. The Lions likely are going to run by committee this season and use Best in the Reggie Bush mode (some touches in between the tackles -- and he's busted a couple big runs during OTA; toss plays, screen passes and as a receiver). Best has shown that when he gets in the open field, he's dangerous, and the Lions will try to get him in as many as those situations as they can. (Detroit News)
FF Today's Take:It seems pretty laughable at this point that Best will share touches with Kevin Smith - who is recovering from a torn ACL - although Smith is likely to be cleared for camp. The Lions will likely need all their big-play weapons on the field as their defense is still substandard by NFL standards and Best is exactly that. Smith could assume a goal-line vulture role at some point, but if the rookie can stay healthy, he is the only Detroit RB worth caring about in fantasy this year.
