2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Can sixth-year gunslinger Matt Stafford be the quarterback to serve a potential fantasy smorgasbord to owners in 2014? The Detroit Lions have focused their offseason on giving their franchise quarterback the pieces necessary for them to become a top-flight offense, copying the blueprint of the prolific New Orleans Saints. New offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi brings the New Orleans scheme, and Lions brass, led by new head coach Jim Caldwell, have brought in the personnel in rookie tight end Eric Ebron and YAC maven Golden Tate. Stafford has never had a problem amassing impressive box scores, with 14,000-plus yards passing and 96 total TDs over the past three seasons. Drew Brees ascended to fantasy elite status in a similar system, but Stafford currently lacks the mechanics, efficiency and system experience of Brees, so fantasy owners expecting comparable results might be disappointed. That said, count on Stafford to approach another 4,500-yard, 30-plus TD season (a solid bet for top-five numbers), offering a more consistent TD/interception ratio on a game-by-game basis, as he will actually have short-to-intermediate route runners in Ebron and Tate and won't have to force big plays downfield. Savvy owners will also notice the three-game homestretch at domed Ford Field late in the fantasy season in weeks 13-15.

Comment: Lions want to run more uptemp offense under new OC Joe Lombardi (Saints).

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Calvin Johnson not likely to play in Week 7
TE Eric Ebron also not expected to play
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 17, 1:30 pm

Detroit Lions
Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell indicated today that Johnson likely will miss his second straight game because of the right ankle injury he suffered in a loss to the Buffalo Bills earlier this month. Asked whether he expected Johnson to play Sunday, Caldwell said, "I've been surprised before because he's an unusual guy and, just talking to him at practice, he's feeling good and coming along. Miracles have happened." (Detroit Free Press)

FFToday's Take: In addition to Johnson, tight end Eric Ebron (hamstring) is expected to sit as well. Golden Tate will once again be Matthew Stafford's top target in the passing game. RB Reggie Bush is expected to return this week.

Injury Lions' Eric Ebron, Reggie Bush limited in practice
Theo Riddick re-aggravates hamstring strain
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Oct 15, 4:39 pm

Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions had six skill position players sidelined or limited for Wednesday's practice, including rookie tight end Eric Ebron. Ebron is a new addition to the practice report, missing a portion of the session with a hamstring injury. Also limited was running back Reggie Bush, who was returning to the practice field after missing all of last week with a twisted ankle. All-Pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson (ankle) and tight end Joseph Fauria (ankle) remained sidelined and were joined by wide receiver Jeremy Ross (ankle) and running back Theo Riddick, who re-aggravated a hamstring strain against the Vikings. FFToday's Take: The injuries to Detroit's offense have sapped the fantasy value of Matthew Stafford and the passing game. If Reggie Bush is feeling good after a week of practice he and Joique Bell will be counted on to shoulder the load against a Saints team that ranks 16th in the NFL against the run with 112 rushing yards allowed per game.

Lions pleased with Stafford's progress
QB showed improvement in "every facet"
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 28, 5:15 pm

Detroit Lions
HC Jim Caldwell had the quarterbacks report last week, so they could be ahead of the learning curve with the new offense. At that time, he told QB Matthew Stafford he was impressed with his understanding of the new offense considering all the new verbiage and increased pace. “I was impressed when he came back that first of all he did not miss a beat,” Caldwell said. “He’s a very, very smart guy. In every facet when he came back, I could see improvement — footwork, accuracy, timing, command of the offense, all of those things.” (Detroit News)

FFToday's Take: Stafford may already have one 40-touchdown season under his belt, but it is possible he is primed for a career year in 2014 or 2015 with the additions of WR Golden Tate and rookie TE Eric Ebron. The Lions even possess three very capable receivers out of the backfield in RBs Reggie Bush, Joique Bell and Theo Riddick. With better fundamentals, owners should not hesitate making Stafford one of the top five quarterbacks selected in fantasy drafts.
