2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Injuries and playing time have prevented Ben Tate from ascending into the upper tier of young runners. Given a one-way ticket to starter's snaps in Cleveland, Tate has a chance to showcase the skills that made him a fantasy darling in 2012. Back in the zone-blocking scheme of Kyle Shanahan, Tate will benefit from a familiar scheme and strong Cleveland offensive line. Sporting a great 4.6 yards per carry average for his career, Tate seems primed to climb the rankings and be a fantasy centerpiece. But before you go and make Tate a high draft pick, consider some of the red flags, the biggest being his injury history. In just three seasons Tate has missed eight games because of injury, and played hurt and ineffective in several more. He simply hasn't displayed the ability to stay healthy for an entire season and is a good bet to break down with too voluminous of a workload. His durability was most likely a reason why his free-agent reception was very lukewarm. The bigger roadblock to Tate's success could be his teammates. Terrance West, the third-round pick out of Towson has been impressive this offseason, as has undrafted free agent and former five-star recruit Isiah Crowell. If West's successful exploits continue into preseason action, look for Tate to cede a large volume of touches to him. Timeshare and injury concerns figure to limit Tate, but in an offense built to run the football, look for Tate to approach the 200-yard carry range and be a low-tier RB2 for your fantasy squad.

Comment: You'll see a lot of Tate and West on the ground in Cleveland this season as the Browns passing game struggles without Josh Gordon.

Injury McKinnon place on IR, back injury
Asiata expected to start
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Dec 6, 6:00 pm

Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings have placed running back Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve, ending his rookie season. McKinnon hurt his lower back and missed the last game against Carolina. He was already ruled out for Sunday, when the Vikings host the New York Jets. (Fox Sports)

FFToday's Take: McKinnon can be safely dropped in all redraft leagues. Expect the Vikings to use Matt Asiata and Ben Tate on Sunday against the Jets. Asiata would be a desperation FLEX play against a solid Jets run defense.

Injury Jerick McKinnon sits with back injury
Status for Sunday doesn't look good
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 28, 1:10 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Vikings rookie running back Jerick McKinnon was the only player absent at Fridayís practice. McKinnon hasnít participated all week dealing with a lingering low back injury. His status at this point for Sundayís game against the Panthers doesnít look too good. (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

FFToday's Take: Having missed practice all week, McKinnon is a candidate for the inactive list. Matt Asiata is expected to return this week and and should split carries with Joe Banyard and newly acquired Ben Tate. The Vikings running back situation is one to avoid in Week 13.

Injury McKinnon misses practice, Asiata limited
Kyle Rudolph practices in full
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Nov 26, 4:46 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Did not participate: TE Chase Ford (hamstring/foot), FS Harrison Smith (shoulder/ankle), WR Cordarrelle Patterson (knee), RB Jerick McKinnon (low back) and DT Sharrif Floyd (knee). Limited participation: RB Matt Asiata (concussion), LT Matt Kalil (knee) and LB Anthony Barr (knee). Full participation: TE Kyle Rudolph (abdomen/groin), WR Jarius Wright (hamstring), WR Greg Jennings (rib) and RT Mike Harrison (ankle). (Star Tribune)

FFToday's Take: With Jerick McKinnon banged up, recent addition Ben Tate is likely to be worked into the rotation week 13. Until the backfield situation is worked out in Minnesota it is tough to trust any Viking running back for fantasy purposes.

Vikings claim Ben Tate off waivers
Minnesota gets "replacement" for Peterson
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 19, 4:27 pm

Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings claimed running back Ben Tate on waivers Wednesday from the Cleveland Browns, a league source told ESPN.com's Field Yates. In claiming Tate, the Vikings owe him $352,941 for 2014 in guaranteed base salary, plus another $46,875 for each game that he is on the 46-man game day roster. His 2015 salary is not guaranteed. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With Adrian Peterson all but out for the rest of the season, and Matt Asiata working through the league's concussion protocol, the Vikings were in need of running back help. Expect a timeshare with McKinnon and Tate moving forward. This move derails the small value McKinnon currently has and puts both in RB4 territory.

Steelers release RB LeGarrette Blount
Running back left the field early after receiving zero carries
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Nov 18, 1:37 pm

Pittburgh Steelers
The Steelers have released running back LeGarrette Blount less than a day after he left the teamís sideline before the completion of the teamís 27-24 comeback win Monday night over Tennessee. "We believe the decision to release LeGarrette is in the best interest of the organization and wish him the best of luck," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in the statement. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

FFToday's Take: Blount received zero carries in Monday night's game against the Titans while Le'Veon Bell received 33. Blount's antics of leaving the field early last night obviously didn't sit well with the team. It's likely that running back needy teams (IND, MIN, DEN, ARI) will kick the tires on Ben Tate before Blount.

Browns waive Ben Tate
Colts, other teams needing healthy RBs could have interest
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Nov 18, 12:00 pm

Cleveland Browns
The Browns announced Tuesday they waived running back Ben Tate, who was in his first season with the team. Tate signed a two-year deal with Cleveland in the offseason. Tate rushed for 333 yards and four touchdowns on 106 carries in eight games. He also had nine catches for 60 yards. However, his role in recent weeks has diminished as Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West have seen their playing time increase. Tate expressed his frustration last week when he said he would "be lying" if he was satisfied with the Browns' three-back rotation, according to Cleveland.com. (CBS)

FFToday's Take: The Colts are in the market for a proven NFL running back that can handle a heavy workload. Don't cut Tate just yet as he might catch on with another squad -- and see work almost immediately.

Browns still have no clear leader in RBBC
HC: "We're not just going to pick one"
By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 17, 3:15 pm

Cleveland Browns
Despite entering the game ranked 12th in rushing, the Browns have no set running-back rotation. Nobody has grabbed hold of the featured-back role, and free-agent signing Ben Tate seems to be slipping out of favor with the coaching staff. He earned just two attempts Sunday against his former team - running for minus-9 yards - and getting just 10 attempts last week. "It's something we'll look at week to week," HC Mike Pettine said. "We're not just going to pick one. When you go in a game-plan situation you look at what gives us the best chance to win." (Cleveland Plain-Dealer)

FFToday's Take: The Browns appear to be moving on from Tate, so it appears the dice-roll owners will have to make each week will be between Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. To that end, West, who carried 26 times for 94 yards against the Bengals, had just five attempts versus the Texans. It's a frustrating situation for all parties involved and makes both rookies nothing better than flex plays until one player emerges - if they do at all.

Isaiah Crowell to get the start for Browns?
RBBC still in effect
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 16, 12:05 pm

Cleveland Browns
Yes, it appears #Browns giving RB Isaiah Crowell the start. (Tony Grossi via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like Crowell will get the first crack and receiving the most carries in the crowded three-headed RBBC in Cleveland. Expect Terrance West and Ben Tate to get touches as well. It's a situation to avoid for fantasy owners.

Ben Tate expected to start for Browns
Assuming no setbacks in practice this week
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Oct 2, 2:58 pm

Cleveland Browns
Ben Tate is "on course" to start at running back Sunday for the Cleveland Browns when they play the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, coach Mike Pettine said. How the running back rotation goes from that point is to be determined. "We know Ben will start," Pettine said. "But that's all we have at this point. And that's assuming that [Tate] comes out of this week as we expect." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Tate will get first crack to be the hot hand however if he struggles early, you could see a combination of Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. Crowell has showed more ability of the first four weeks and could be inline surpass West in the pecking order. Tate is a risky RB2 heading into Week 5.
