2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Following some serious hype coming into 2013, San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick was a bit of a bust for fantasy purposes in his first full season as the team's starting quarterback. Some of that can be attributed to the fact that he is still growing as a player and particularly as a passer, but perhaps the biggest problem was that he missed his top target Michael Crabtree for the majority of the season when Crabtree tore his Achilles tendon prior to the start of the regular season. Upon Crabtree's return, the two seemed to have some chemistry, which is certainly a nice sign heading into 2014. With Crabtree back in the lineup, Kaepernick finished the season with 19 or more fantasy points in seven of his final eight games. He found more success with his running game, especially toward the end of the year and in the playoffs, which makes sense as that is the time for players to go all-out and put their bodies on the line. Don't expect Vick-like rushing numbers, but there's no reason to think that Kaepernick won't still be in the top five when it comes to rushing yardage at the quarterback position. He's currently being drafted very late, as the No. 11 fantasy quarterback, which gives him great upside with very little downside. It would be difficult for Kaepernick to not at least bring back an even return on his low-average draft position.

Chudzinski likely top OC choice for Rams, 49ers
Spent 2014 season as Colts' special assistant
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jan 26, 4:40 pm

San Francisco
The 49ers and the Rams are the last teams with offensive-coordinator vacancies. But the next couple of days could be important for both organizations, as they appear to have targeted soon-to-be-available Rob Chudzinski. The Colts denied permission last week for the 49ers and Rams to interview Chudzinski while he remained under contract as “special assistant to the head coach.” But his contract reportedly expires Monday, in essence making him a coaching free agent and able to begin interviewing with other clubs on Tuesday. Chudzinski has appeared to be the 49ers’ top candidate to join Jim Tomsula's staff in charge of the offense all along. (CSN Bay Area)

FFToday's Take: "Chud" would be an upgrade for both teams and would probably make more fantasy owners happy if he landed in San Francisco. The ex-Panthers play-caller helped Cam Newton make a big splash in the NFL in his first two seasons before spending one year as a head coach in Cleveland, where he coaxed huge seasons out of Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron. In San Francisco, he'd get to work with a Newton-like talent in Colin Kaepernick and Cameron-like talent in Vernon Davis.

Kyle Shanahan among candidates to be 49ers HC
Mutually parted ways with Jim Harbaugh on Sunday
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 29, 4:00 pm

San Francisco
Browns OC Kyle Shanahan is on the 49ers list of coaching candidates, a source told The Plain Dealer. The 49ers are in the market for a new coach after announcing Sunday they mutually agreed to part ways with coach Jim Harbaugh. Shanahan, who is the son of former NFL coach Mike Shanahan, has held the role of offensive coordinator with the Texans, Redskins and Browns. He has been coaching in the NFL since 2004. In his first season as the Browns offensive coordinator, Cleveland ranked 23rd in total offense (324.6 yards per game) and 27th in scoring offense (18.7 points per game). (CBS Sports)

FFToday's Take: Shanahan joins Broncos OC Adam Gase and Seahawks DC Dan Quinn among the coaches that have reportedly been asked to interview with the Niners. Shanahan is particularly intriguing hire since his preferred zone-running scheme is in direct contrast to the power-running scheme San Francisco utilized under HC Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman. However, Shanahan has had plenty of experience working with mobile quarterbacks like Colin Kaepernick, which is what the Niners probably would most like to accomplish with this hire.
