|After catching 53 passes for 493 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 6.5 PPG, there is a good chance that Rudolph will be getting some fantasy love in this year's draft as a potential third-year breakout candidate at TE. We're not buying it. While the Vikings’ 2011 second-round pick has solid size at 6'6”, 259 pounds and is a good route runner on short and intermediate patterns, he lacks the speed necessary to become a truly elite tight end. Not helping matters is the presence of quarterback Christian Ponder, who is clearly more of a game-managing check-down artist and not the gunslinger who could propel a player like Rudolph to fantasy stardom. Where Rudolph excels is in the red zone, having caught 12 touchdown passes in his last 23 games. And we all know it’s foolhardy to chase touchdowns, even if the Vikings lack a big receiver to steal Rudolph's red zone looks. Consider him an upper-tier TE2 in 2013.
| Kyle Rudolph to miss a month -- Mon Nov 4 2:05 pm --|
Fractured left foot
|Vikings HC Leslie Frazier said TE Kyle Rudolph has a fractured left foot and will miss the next month. Starting RT Phil Loadholt (concussion) won't practice today. The team's "practice" will be a walkthrough.
Frazier also said today, in his press briefing at Winter Park, that Christian Ponder will be the starting quarterback on Thursday night against Washington at the Metrodome. (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)|
FF Today's Take: Given his level of production with the inadequate quarterbacking in Minnesota this season, most owners can probably part ways with Rudolph in redraft leagues. A four-week absence would put his probable return around Week 13 - much too long for teams to hold on to a TE2. John Carlson will likely absorb most of his snaps, but isn't a realistic fantasy option. As for Ponder, the Vikings didn't have much of a choice other than to stick with Ponder on a short week.
|Ponder to start for Vikings -- Fri Nov 1 1:50 pm --|
Not guaranteed to start Week 10
|Vikings coach Leslie Frazier announced Christian Ponder will start against the Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Frazier made the decision public on Friday, although he knew Ponder would start earlier in the week. Ponder took first team reps throughout the week during the open portion of practice and did not participate after practice in team sessions with the second team. (Minneapolis Star Tribune)|
FF Today's Take: Once we learned Ponder was taking first team reps in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, it was inevitable that Ponder would be announced as the starter. TE Kyle Rudolph has some low-end TE1 fantasy value but receivers Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson will be high risk fantasy gambles.
