2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
Andrew Luck rebounded quite nicely from his injury plagued 2015 season to finish last season as a top five fantasy quarterback. Luck's ceiling is tantalizing and over the past three seasons, he has averaged just over 26 fantasy points per game and has never averaged less than 21 fantasy points per contest.

The Colts offense boasts quality pass catchers in T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief as well as a solid all around tight end in Jack Doyle. Additionally, the holes on the defensive side of the ball (ranked 30th in yards allowed and 22nd in points allowed) should keep Luck throwing the ball deep into games this year. It is rare to consider more passing attempts as a negative but when you factor in an offensive line that allowed its quarterbacks to be sacked the fifth most in the league this scenario represents the exception to the rule. Asking a subpar offensive line to pass block more in 2017 increases the injury risk of a player that has yet to begin throwing after off-season shoulder surgery. Luck's delayed rehab schedule may cause him to miss a good chunk of training camp; possibly lingering into the regular season. It's too soon to move Luck outside the top ten quarterbacks but he carries significant risk for a fantasy player routinely being forecast as a top five player at his position. Scott Tolzien is slated to hold the clipboard this year so the Colts are truly pushing their luck at the NFL's most demanding position.

UPDATE 8/7/17: Andrew Luck has been placed on the preseason PUP list by the Colts as he continues to rehab from offseason shoulder surgery. The surgery on Luck's throwing shoulder isn't taking longer than a typical recovery, but it does mean that the optimistic six-month schedule is not happening either. It's too early to know whether Luck is in danger of opening the regular season on the PUP list but fantasy owners should be aware of that possibility prior to taking him in drafts this season. The team's lack of movement to bring in an experienced backup quarterback hints at how the team expects Luck's availability to play out. It is doubtful that the Colts would be willing to ride Scott Tolzien for a month or more into the year without adding another worthwhile NFL quarterback to learn the offense and be the team's backup to open the year. More likely, Luck avoids the PUP, misses two or three games to build strength in his throwing shoulder and gives fantasy owners top ten fantasy numbers for about three quarters of the fantasy season.

Injury Luck suffers setback, will not practice
Colts QB experiencing shoulder soreness
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 18, 3:00 pm

Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts are shutting down their $140 million quarterback, for now, placing Andrew Luck’s 2017 season in doubt. Ten months after he had surgery on his throwing shoulder, and two weeks after he finally returned to the practice field, Luck received a cortisone shot to treat the soreness that has persisted in recent weeks, first-year General Manager Chris Ballard revealed on Wednesday. (Indianapolis Star)

FFToday's Take: The fact that Luck won't be able to practice further delays his timeline for return. Jacoby Brissett should continue to start for the foreseeable future. If you've been stashing Luck on your bench, it's time to give consideration to dropping him from your roster.

Injury Andrew Luck to begin practicing this week
Franchise QB will be limited, slated to play Oct. 16 or Oct. 22
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Oct 3, 10:35 am

Indianapolis Colts
Colts general manager Chris Ballard said this is the week Andrew Luck returns to the practice field, albeit in a limited role. “We’ll slowly start working him back into practice this week,’’ he said during the team’s Monday night radio show. “We’ll see how much he gets. (CBS)

FFToday's Take: Luck hasn’t practiced with his teammates since undergoing January surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. His return is slated for Oct. 16 at Tennessee at the very earliest, but more likely Oct. 22 at home against Jacksonville or Oct. 29 at Cincinnati.

Injury Andrew Luck ruled out for Week 3
Still not cleared to practice following offseason shoulder surgery
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 18, 5:30 pm

Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts HC Chuck Pagano on Monday announced that quarterback Andrew Luck will not play on Sunday, when the team takes on the Cleveland Browns in their Week 3 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium. “I don’t know about practice right now,” HC Chuck Pagano said. “I guess when the doctors clear him to practice, he puts the red jersey on and you guys (the media) see him out there, I see him at the same time, then we’ll know he’s ready to go and start practicing.” (

FFToday's Take: If Luck was expected to miss much more time, the Colts would like put him on IR with an eye on making him one of the players to return, so it is reasonable to assume he'll be able to return sometime in early October. Jacoby Brissett will continue to start in his absence.

Injury Luck out Week 2, Colts undecided on starting QB
No timetable for Luck's return
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 11, 7:00 pm

Indianapolis Colts
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has officially been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, coach Chuck Pagano said Monday. On who will start Week 2: "[It's] something that we'll discuss later [Monday] and into [Tuesday] as we game plan," Pagano said."...We have to do what's best for the football team and what gives us the best chance to move the ball and put points on the board." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Scott Tolzien was woeful in Week 1 going 9-of-18 for 128 yards, 2 interceptions, both returned for touchdowns and Jacoby Brissett has been with the team for less than 2 weeks, leaving the Colts in difficult spot.

Injury Luck out, Scott Tolzien to start Week 1
Luck removed from the PUP list
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 4, 10:40 am

Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts will go into Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams without quarterback Andrew Luck, general manager Chris Ballard said Monday. Scott Tolzien will start against the Rams, Ballard announced during a news conference. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: This was the assumption all along but now it's official. Luck was removed from the PUP list but is still not ready to play and has an uncertain timetable. Tolzien is a poor Week 1 option against the Rams and gives a slight downgrade to T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief and TE Jack Doyle.

Injury Still no timetable for Andrew Luck's return
Colts QB's Week 1 status in doubt
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Aug 22, 11:00 am

Indianapolis Colts
Stephen Holder (@HolderStephen) on Twitter regarding Andrew Luck: "Said he still doesn't have a timeline and isn't worried about it. Then he gave me a few cliches and laughed if off. I don't have a good sense." Scott Tolzien would face the Rams in Week 1 if Luck were still on PUP or unable to go right away after a limited practice schedule. (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: This is bad for Luck owners who were assured by beat reporters from the Indy Star and other outlets throughout the month of July and into August that Luck would be removed from PUP and ready for Week 1. His draft value has to take an enormous hit, considering both the prognosis and his less-than-stellar 2016.

Injury Andrew Luck to avoid PUP?
Week 1 status still up in the air
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Aug 9, 8:29 am

Indianapolis Colts
Just said on @nflnetwork: #Colts GM Chris Ballard told me all indications are Andrew Luck won't start season on PUP. Play Week 1? Still TBD. (Tom Pelissero via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Andrew Luck is a top five fantasy quarterback when healthy but questions regarding his rehab make him a riskier bet heading into 2017. Although Luck may not be ready to start by Week 1, fantasy owners can probably expect him to be back under center sometime between Weeks 2-4 if he remains off the regular season PUP list.

Injury Andrew Luck not a lock for Week 1
Still working way back from offseason shoulder surgery
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 7, 5:30 pm

Indianapolis Colts
On the Sirius XM Fantasy show, Adam Schefter expressed concerns over Andrew Luck. Said there's "a chance he isn't ready to open the season." (Pro Football Focus)

FFToday's Take: At last check, Luck was still only throwing a tennis ball and has yet to be cleared to throw a football. CBS Sports Jason La Canfora recently floated the possibility of the PUP list out for Luck, it would cost in the first six weeks of the season, although that still seems unlikely. Luck, T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief all need to be moved down draft boards a bit, at least until the quarterback is ready to practice. Scott Tolzien is getting the bulk of snaps in camp.

Injury Luck not ready to commit to playing Week 1
"There's no reason to freak out"
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jul 29, 9:30 am

Indianapolis Colts
Quarterback Andrew Luck, who is on the preseason physically unable to participate list, said he's not ready to commit to playing the regular season opener. "There's no reason to freak out," Luck said. "I don't know what day it's going to be, I don't know what week, I don't know when, but I definitely will be (better)." (Indianapolis Star)

FFToday's Take: Luck is progressing slowly after shoulder surgery in January and begins camp on the active/PUP list meaning he can be taken off the list at any time. You can expect his ADP (QB4, 5.09) to slide the longer he remains off the practice field and the more nervous fantasy owners become.

Injury Luck to begin training camp on active/PUP list
Should be removed at some point during preseason
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Jul 24, 1:46 pm

Indianapolis Colts
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will begin training camp this weekend on the physically unable to perform list, first-year general manager Chris Ballard revealed Monday. Luck won’t be able to practice until he’s removed from the list, which Ballard said he expects will happen at some point during the preseason. (Indianapolis Star)

FFToday's Take: Luck has started to throw which is good news but the uncertainty surrounding his timetable for being fully cleared is cause for concern. For what its worth, the team still believes he's on track to being under center Week 1.
