2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
In 2016, Martin reminded fantasy owners of just how disappointing he can be before checking himself into rehab prior to the end of the regular season. So what can we make of his outlook for 2017? The facts begin with his four-game suspension that started at the end of the 2016 season. That means he has only three games left to serve and will be able to return Week 4 just in time for four straight games against quality defenses (NYG, NE, @ARI, @BUF). Martin's injury history (dating back to college) includes four lower body injuries and one shoulder injury. That isn't that much worse than the average back these days but knowing that he could miss a game or two is worth noting when you are considering investing in a player already tabbed to miss three games. The good news is that he is on the right side of 30 and the team is on the upswing. Though many fantasy owners will likely avoid the Muscle Hamster, there are still miles left on the tires that shouldn't be ignored. Martin should return to his role of lead dog in the backfield making him a solid bet to get at least 80 total yards each week he plays. That may not be RB1 material but there is a place for a veteran running back that can catch the ball out of the backfield. The key will come down to what each owner is willing to pay for his services or how much of a discount is required to take on a player that is probably a RB2 at maximum value and best valued as a quality RB3 outside the top 25 fantasy running backs.

Buccaneers release Doug Martin
Tampa save $6.75 million on salary cap
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Feb 20, 12:05 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
After six up and mostly down seasons, Doug Martin's run with the Bucs is over. The two-time Pro Bowl running back was released by Tampa Bay Tuesday, a move that was expected after he failed to rush for less than 500 yards in four of the past five seasons. The decision will save the Bucs $6.75 million that Martin was scheduled to earn in 2018. Because of the structure of his contract, the team will absorb no dead money on their salary cap. (Tampa Bay Times)

FFToday's Take: The move was somewhat expected considering the savings and the zero dead money against the cap. Martin had a stellar 1402 rushing yards and 7 total touchdowns in 2015 but has only played in 19 games the last two seasons averaging 2.9 yards per carry. Peyton Barber is the leader in the clubhouse for the most work out of the backfield but don't be shocked if the Bucs address the running back position in the draft or free agency.

Doug Martin inactive for Week 15
Peyton Barber expected to be featured against Falcons

FFToday's Take: A healthy scratch for Martin means he is likely done as a Buc at the end of the year. Peyton Barber is expected to draw the start instead and a capable RB2 as a result. Although not exactly a game-breaking talent, Barber consistently grinds out yards and should be given the final three games to prove he can be "the guy" in 2018. Jacquizz Rodgers and Charles Sims will back up Barber.

Injury Doug Martin expected to start for Bucs
Koetter doesn't believe in players losing their job to injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Dec 8, 5:00 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
#Bucs are expected to start RB Doug Martin in his return from a concussion vs the Lions. HC doesn't believe in players losing their role as the result of an injury. (Rick Stroud on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Stroud is the Bucs beat reporter for the Tampa Bay Times. If Martin starts, its unclear how much of a role Peyton Barber will have coming off a 100-yard game against the Packers. If the Bucs o-line can carry over their improved play from last week, Martin would have Flex value against the Lions.

Injury Doug Martin practices in full Wednesday
Still in concussion protocol

DE Robert Ayers and RB Doug Martin practiced fully but are still in concussion protocol. Both players still need to clear concussion protocol so their status for Sunday remains uncertain. (DetroitLions.com)

FFToday's Take: Martin is on track to play assuming he clears the protocol by this weekend. It's unclear what role he will have given Peyton Barber had a solid game against the Packers last week. Fantasy owners should prioritize Giovani Bernard over Barber on the waiver for now.

Peyton Barber shines in Bucs loss
First Bucs RB to rush for 100+ yards
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Dec 4, 7:00 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Playing behind a makeshift offensive line, Peyton Barber rushed for a career-high 102 yards on 23 carries, becoming the first Bucs player to reach the century rushing mark this season. Barber had been the fourth running back for most of the season. (Tampa Bay Times)

FFToday's Take: Barber was announced as the starter roughly an hour before kickoff and he made the most of his opportunity, operating in a lead back role. Jacquizz Rodgers and Charles Sims handled 3 carries a piece. It remains to be seen how much work Barber will receive when Doug Martin (concussion) returns but Barber has certainly earned more snaps moving forward.
