Jaguars end the Blake Bortles era
Jaguars will absorb a $16.5 million dead cap hit
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Mar 13, 7:45 pm

Jacksonville Jaguars
Releasing Blake Bortles without a post-June 1 designation means the Jaguars will absorb a $16.5 million dead cap hit and save only $4.5 million. Bortles was guaranteed $6.5 million this year. He also was due a $1 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the 2019 league year (Sunday), but obviously will not receive that now. The Jaguars now have four quarterbacks under contract for 2019: Nick Foles, Cody Kessler, Tanner Lee, and Alex McGough. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: This move was expected early in the off-season as info leaked that Nick Foles was likely to become the next Jaguars QB. Bortles had his moments in Jacksonville but battled turnovers and slipped into a game-manager label that he could never shake. Miami is the only team looking for a starting quarterback at this point, giving Bortles few options. He'll likely have to settle for a backup job in 2019.

Nick Foles headed to Jacksonville
$50.125 million in guaranteed money
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Mar 11, 4:00 pm

Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars will sign former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles to a 4-year deal worth $88 million, according to ESPN and multiple sources. The deal includes $50.125 million in guaranteed money, a source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: This has been the worst kept secret over the last few weeks. Blake Bortles is expected to be released once Foles is signed later this week. Foles walks into a run-first offense without an alpha receiver but has enough juice to be on the QB2 and streaming radar in 2019.

Jaguars release RB Carlos Hyde
Jacksonville clearing cap space for QB Nick Foles
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Mar 8, 12:15 pm

Jacksonville Jaguars
Five days before the start of free agency, the Jaguars began clearing salary cap space on Friday. Released were defensive tackle Malik Jackson and running back Carlos Hyde, with other cuts expected. The roster moves give front office chief Tom Coughlin more spending flexibility once free agency begins Wednesday, chiefly to sign free agent quarterback Nick Foles. (Florida Times Union)

FFToday's Take: The Jags gave up a 5th-round pick in 2019 for Carlos Hyde when Leonard Fournette injured his hamstring last season. Hyde went on to carry the ball 58 times for 189 yards and 0 TDs. Hyde is still young enough (will turn 28 on September 21st) to garner interest from RB needy teams but will likely be part of a committee.

Nick Foles headed to Jacksonville?
Market for Foles outside of Jacksonville has not developed
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Mar 3, 1:00 pm

Philadelphia Eagles
The only Eagles quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl is bound for Jacksonville when NFL free agency opens March 13, according to NFL sources with knowledge of the situation. A market for Nick Foles outside of Jacksonville has not developed, and though nothing is certain until it is official, the Jaguars absolutely expect to sign Foles, sources said. (Philadelphia Inquirer)

FFToday's Take: Foles to Jacksonville has been the steady rumor this off-season and it makes sense considering the Jags new OC is John DeFilippo, who was Foles’ quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia. Miami, Washington and the New York Giants have quarterback needs but those teams seem to be headed in a different direction at the position. The legal tampering period for free agents begins noon eastern on March 11th.
