2016 Outlook
Depth Chart
Washington sent away a lot of assets for the rights to draft Robert Griffin III in Round 1 of the 2012 draft, a move many questioned at the time. The Redskins also drafted Cousins that same year in Round 4. Cousins is now being paid franchise tag money after leading the team to the 2015 playoffs while RGIII was allowed to leave for Football Siberia (a/k/a Cleveland). Head Coach Jay Gruden preferred Cousins’ pocket presence and conventional playing style from his first day on the job despite being forced into a relationship with Griffin, and he’s turned the former Michigan State Spartan into one of the league’s best young quarterbacks. Cousins threw for 4166 yards with 29 touchdown passes last season while most importantly limiting his interceptions (11). He was the most accurate quarterback in the league with a completion percentage of 69.8%, despite taking his shots downfield. After a terrific 2015, Cousins finds himself as the unquestioned leader of the team and surrounded by a talented and dynamic collection of skill players heading into the 2016 season. Cousins doesn’t impress anyone physically or even with his skill set, but even when he struggled early in his career, he showed the “it factor” that led many to believe he was capable of being a starting quarterback in this league. The team drafted TCU WR Josh Doctson in Round 1 of the NFL draft this season to give him yet another weapon in his arsenal. Cousins doesn’t yet have the name recognition of many of the other quarterbacks that he outperformed last season, which makes him a great target for those owners that like to wait out quarterbacks during their draft. He could easily see another top 10 finish.

Kirk Cousins gets exclusive franchise tag
Second year in a row Redskins QB gets franchised
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Feb 28, 1:30 pm

Washington Redskins
Kirk Cousins has received the franchise tag for the second year in a row. The exlusive tender means that Cousins won't be able negotiate with other teams. The Redskins can still trade Cousins, but would be negotating the deal with interested teams on their own. A recent report had the 49ers as Cousins' choice of destinations should he be dealt as he'd be reunited with Kyle Shanahan. (ProFootballTalk)

FFToday's Take: Cousins may have wanted to reunite with Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco but those desires have been put on hold. This is the first time a team has used the franchise tag on the same QB twice. The two sides have until July 15th to work out a long-term deal. Cousins finished as the No.6 fantasy quarterback in 2016 with 25 passing TDs and 4 rushing TDs.

Owner adamant that QB Kirk Cousins will be back
Cousins played under franchise tag in 2016
By: Jake Gordon | Tue Jan 24, 10:17 pm

Washington Redskins
Washington Redskins president Bruce Allen made it clear where the team stands when it comes to quarterback Kirk Cousins: Washington plans on him coming back. However, when asked on Sirius Radio Monday if he'd put it as a "10", on a scale of 1 to 10, that Cousins would return, Allen said, "Yeah. Kirk is our quarterback. He's played well the last two years. I know there's other speculation, but it doesn't come from the Redskins." Earlier in the day, at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Redskins coach Jay Gruden echoed a similar refrain. He said he has texted with Cousins a couple of times in the offseason. And Gruden told reporters that "I totally anticipate him coming back to the Washington Redskins." (ESPN.com)

FFToday's Take: It looks like Kirk Cousins will eventually be given an extension to remain in Washington. Former OC Sean McVay's departure to the Rams will leave the Redskins and Cousins to do some retooling in 2017 and beyond but the bones of the offense should remains unchanged.
