2017 Outlook
Cousins posted a second consecutive top-10 season in 2016 with 379.9 fantasy points (23.7 per game), yet his long-term future in Washington is still up in the air as the Redskins front office used the franchise tag on him as trade rumors swirled all off-season. The primary knock on Cousins is his poor decision making in playoff games, especially in the red zone, which has cost his team points in critical situations.

Neither issue should keep fantasy owners from drafting Cousins as a top-10 option in 2017, as he has proven to be a top-tier performer in an offense that reloaded after the departure of free agents Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson. The signing of Terrelle Pryor from Cleveland will give Cousins a viable deep threat and a big body in the red zone, and the emergence of former first-round pick Josh Doctson should help fill the void left by Garcon.

The Cousins-led offense finished as the No. 8 ranked passing attack in both 2015 and 2016, and another top-10 finish is likely as the Redskins' poor defense (fifth-most points allowed in 2016) will force the offense to put up a large number on the scoreboard to keep pace. The loss of former offensive coordinator Sean McVay to the Rams could be a cause of concern for Cousins owners, but the fact that former quarterbacks coach and Cousins confidant Matt Cavanaugh was promoted to offensive coordinator should ease most worries.

News From The Past 90 Days
Jets ready to make a play for Cousins
New York reportedly $70 million under salary cap
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Feb 19, 11:00 am

New York Jets
The game plan: It's simple: Get Kirk Cousins. The Jets want him badly, and sources say they're willing to pay whatever it takes -- unless the Washington Redskins decide to tag him for a third time (unlikely). Money aside, the Jets hope to convince him he'll have a chance to win in New York. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With Josh McCown a free agent the Jets are in the market for a quarterback and are willing to make a run at Cousins. The Jets are reportedly $70 million under the cap giving them plenty of room to overpay for the Redskins QB. The Broncos and Vikings are also potential suitors giving Cousins significant leverage in negotiations.

Alex Smith headed to Washington
Redskins agree on 4-year extension with Smith
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jan 30, 9:00 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, league sources confirmed to ESPN's Field Yates. Smith and the Redskins reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal cannot be completed until the new league year begins March 14. It is expected to be for a second-round pick and possibly more, according to a source. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Our first big transaction of the 2018 season has been leaked. The deal can't be made official until the league year begins on March 14th. The Redskins have been employing Kirk Cousins on the franchise tag the last two years. Smith had his best season as a pro last year, throwing for 4042 yards, 26 TDs and 5 INTs. Patrick Mahomes will take over the starting quarterback job in Kansas City.

Elway committed to improving at quarterback
Denver making changes after offense flounders in 2017
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Jan 3, 9:38 am

Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos laid the failure in 2017 at the feet of the quarterback. After watching Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, and Paxton Lynch flounder all season, GM John Elway stated the obvious on Tuesday: Denver's "No. 1 goal" is to upgrade the QB spot this offseason. "I think there is no doubt we've got to get better at that position," Elway said, via the team's official website. "For us to have a chance to get better, we've got to get better at that position." (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: Denver will be among the numerous teams entering the offseason with plans on adding a quarterback after the team posted a 76.0 QB-rating (31st in the NFL) and threw the most interceptions in the league. Denver's roster is in more of a "win now" phase so look for them to be active in free agency starting with Kirk Cousins (if he is not given franchise tag).

Kirk cousins comments on future
I want 'to be associated with winning'
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Dec 27, 10:16 am

Washington Redskins
ASHBURN, Va. -- His desire has long been known. During the 2016 training camp, Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins said he wanted the organization to become like the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, a team known for winning and no drama. After beating the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Cousins reiterated his stance. "I want this brand, this organization, to be associated with winning and when people around the league and our fans that support this league think about this organization, I want them to think of winners," Cousins said. (ESPN.com)

FFToday's Take: Kirk Cousins is about to cap off his third straight season as a top ten fantasy quarterback. He will be a focal point in the offseason where he could receive the franchise tag for the third time. If he is not franchised, his new team would certainly need to pony up both dollars and a clear shot at providing Cousins with a shot at a championship.
