2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
In quiet fashion, Burkhead posted a solid 2017 season as the No.18 ranked running back in terms of fantasy points per game. His 10 fantasy point per game was higher than Christian McCaffrey, Tevin Coleman, and Lamar Miller, and he scored the same number of total touchdowns as LeSean McCoy - on 252 fewer touches.

The addition of first-round selection Sony Michel will no doubt cut into the value of Burkhead in 2018, as one would assume that Belichick and the New England front office will look to feature their new prized running back. Despite this fact, Burkhead will continue to have value as the primary goal-line back and could be a steal if Michel continues his trend of fumbling issues dating back to his time at Georgia or has trouble recovering from his knee procedure.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Rex Burkhead headed to IR
Neck injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 26, 11:55 am

New England Patriots
BREAKING: The #Patriots will be putting RB Rex Burkhead (neck) and rookie LB Ja'Whaun Bentley (unknown) on IR today, per league source. (Jim McBride on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Burkhead was a pre-season favorite of the fantasy community with and ADP in the 6th round at RB28. Now, Sony Michel, James White and Kenjon Barner now makeup the Patriots running back depth chart with Michel being the back to own in most leagues.

Injury Sony Michel not expected to play
Knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 9, 8:10 am

New England Patriots
Patriots’ RB Sony Michel, listed as questionable for opener against the Texans due to a knee injury, is not expected to play today, per source. More on Sunday NFL Countdown at 10 a.m. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Michel has been a longshot to play Week 1 after missing most of August with a knee issue that required a clean up procedure. Expect to see plenty of Rex Burkhead and James White in the backfield for New England both are viable fantasy plays in Week 1.

Patriots release RB Mike Gillislee
Should catch on with another team
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 1, 1:23 pm

New England Patriots
The Patriots have released Mike Gillislee, per source. As it turned out, they sat him against the Giants as a courtesy to prevent an injury before this transaction. (Jeff How on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Gillisle was part of a crowded running back group that includes Rex Burkhead, Sony Michel, James White and Jeremy Hill. With Gillislee's release, it appears the veteran Hill has made the team.

Injury Sony Michel in doubt for Week 1
Rookie recovering from early August knee drain
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 30, 5:40 pm

New England Patriots
Per Jeff Howe of The Athletic: “There has been a constant sense of optimism surrounding Rex Burkhead’s readiness despite a slight tear in his knee, but that sense hasn’t been as strong around Sony Michel, as sources maintained to The Athletic earlier this month the start of his regular season was in jeopardy due to a knee drain that was caused by a meniscus issue.” (The Athletic - Jeff Howe)

FFToday's Take: As the New England backfield turns. Burkhead was overprotective of Burkhead this month because the Patriots supposedly have big plans for him. That could and should still be the case. Michel was either supposed to fill the Dion Lewis role in this offense or be the next Alvin Kamara, depending on who you ask. Owners are advised to treat both Burkhead and Michel as high-upside flexes or RB3 until further notice.

Injury Sony Michel back at practice
First football activity since injuring knee on Aug. 1
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 27, 5:00 pm

New England Patriots
Progress on the injury front for the Patriots: Rookie RB Sony Michel makes his first appearance on the practice field since Aug. 1. (ESPN - Mike Reiss)

FFToday's Take: The Patriots' backfield is often about as clear as mud, and that seems to be even more the case this year. Michel was reportedly struggling in camp even before his injury and three weeks away isn't going to help him learn the Patriots' complicated offensive system any faster or close the gap on Rex Burkhead regardless of his first-round draft pedigree. Michel has massive upside, but whether it has a chance to be realized in 2018 is another story.

Injury Burkhead dealing with slight tear in knee
Could've played tonight if it were a regular season game
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 16, 11:28 pm

New England Patriots
More clarity: Rex Burkhead is dealing with a slight tear in his knee, but it’s been deemed a minor injury and something he’ll be able to play through. Since it’s the preseason, maintenance takes the priority over everything else. (Jeff Howe on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Burkhead has missed the last few practices with an undisclosed injury and Howe reportedly earlier that he likely would've played in Preseason game No.2 if it were a regular season game. The "tear" associated with a knee injury doesn't sound good but it appears this is something the Patriots feel comfortable with Burkhead playing through this season.

Injury Burkhead, Britt, Michel not expected to play
Will miss pre-season Week 2 due to rehab/injuries
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 16, 7:00 am

New England Patriots
While some might not play due to coach’s decision, the following are among those not expected to suit up vs. Eagles for injury/rehab reasons: WR Kenny Britt, RB Rex Burkhead, OT Marcus Cannon, CB Duke Dawson, DE Trey Flowers, CB Ryan Lewis, RB Sony Michel and ST Matthew Slater. (Mike Reiss on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Burkhead's injury is a mystery for now and with the Patriots being tight-lipped, it might be difficult to get clarity in the near future. Jeremy Hill has been limited in practice this week so it's unclear how much playing time he will get this evening. Tom Brady is expected to play the majority of the first half.

Injury Sony Michel suffers knee injury
Requires procedure, will miss pre-season
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 4, 3:00 pm

New England Patriots
Sony Michel suffered a knee injury that concerned the team Wednesday, source said. He still isn’t at practice. Further details w/more clarity: Michel’s knee injury requires a procedure that’s expected to keep him out of preseason, and perhaps even into the start of the reg season, per 2 sources. So not a major sigh of relief, but the expectation is Michel should contribute this season. (Jeff Howe on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The injury happened on Wednesday and it appears will sideline the Pats rookie running back for the time being. The procedure was to drain fluid from the knee. The Patriots are notorious for keeping a tight lip on injury situations so it's hard to predict when Michel will be ready for action. While this is a big blow for his fantasy stock, the Patriots have a stockpile of running backs including Rex Burkhead, James White, Mike Gillislee and Jeremy Hill.
