2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
Much is made of players like Tyreek Hill and John Ross who dazzle with speed, but few understand just how freakishly athletic Marquise Goodwin really is. Goodwin, who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics, is not only one of the fastest pure speed players in the league as he ran a 4.27 forty-yard dash, but also posted a 132-inch broad jump. Goodwin has been in the league for five seasons now and his athletic profile has likely taken a half-step back, but he's still an absurdly gifted athlete who is capable of taking the ball to the house in any situation.

Goodwin had never been used much as a receiver until his fourth season in Buffalo where he saw 68 targets. His catch rate that season, 42.6%, was poor, but he took a big step forward when he finally got a fresh start in San Francisco this past season. As the defacto WR1 for the 49ers after Garcon's injury, Goodwin stepped up, catching 56 of the 102 passes that came his way, including an exceptional 17.2 yards per reception number.

Perhaps most interesting for 2018, though, was Goodwin's connection with Garoppolo. In the five games Garoppolo started, Goodwin caught 67 percent of the targets that came his way, 76.8 yards per game on 5.8 receptions per game. That would've put Goodwin at an impressive 16-game pace of 1,229 yards on 93 receptions.

Of course, with Garcon now healthy and the team adding a couple of pieces in the passing game, it seems unlikely that Goodwin will continue to be targeted this season quite as often as he was down the stretch in 2017, but Goodwin is the kind of player who can still contribute even on fewer targets because of his big play ability. Goodwin is actually being drafted ahead of Garcon in most drafts, but both players are much safer as WR4s than they are WR3s.

Injury Jimmy Garoppolo done for the season
Torn ACL
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 24, 7:20 pm

San Francisco
MRI showed what 49ers feared: Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL and his season is over, per source. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: C.J. Beathard is expected to lead the team the rest of the way. It's a crushing blow for a team that was supposed to take a huge step forward in 2018 and could effectively end whatever breakout potential Marquise Goodwin had. Expect the 49ers to rely heavily on Matt Breida and Alfred Morris going forward, and owners shouldn't be overly surprised if George Kittle ends up as the team's top option in the passing game. Regardless, Beathard promotion is a downgrade for the entire offense.

Injury Marquise Goodwin limited on Wednesday
Thigh bruise
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 19, 5:21 pm

San Francisco
Marquise Goodwin was limited in practice on first session back from his deep thigh bruise. Did not practice: G Joshua Garnett (toe), T Joe Staley (not injury related - vet day), S Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) Limited: Goodwin, G Mike Person (foot), CB Ahkello Witherspoon (ankle) (Matt Barrows on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Goodwin missed Week 2 after suffering a thigh injury in Week 1. If he's able to go this week, he'll walk into an A+ matchup against a shaky Chiefs secondary.

Injury Marquise Goodwin out for Week 2
Quad injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 14, 6:00 pm

San Francisco
Kyle Shanahan said Marquise Goodwin, Josh Garnett and Erik Magnuson are out for Sunday. Mike Person still has a chance but it looks as if Najee Toran will start at RG. (Matt Barrows on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Goodwin missed practice this week after taking a shot to the thigh early in Week 1. In his place, Pierre Garcon and Dante Pettis could see increased opportunities at wide receiver while George Kittle remains one of the top tight end plays of the week. If the Lions decide to stick Darius Slay on Garcon, Pettis would have sneaky upside.

Injury Marquise Goodwin misses practice Wednesday
Thigh injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 12, 3:00 pm

San Francisco
Marquise Goodwin (thigh), Mike Person (foot), Joshua Garnett (toe) and Malcolm Smith (hamstring) are not practicing today. Erik Magnuson (hamstring) is going through individual drills for the first time since his injury. (Matt Barrows on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Goodwin re-entered the game last week after suffering a thigh injury, but didn't last long and was forced to the sideline. In his absence, TE George Kittle led the 49ers with 91 yards receiving. If Goodwin doesn't play, Dante Pettis would see an increased role.

Injury Marquise Goodwin day-to-day
Thigh bruise
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 10, 9:20 pm

San Francisco
WR Marquise Goodwin has a bruised thigh and will be day to day this week. (ESPN - Nick Wagoner)

FFToday's Take: While Goodwin tried to play through the injury initially, the pain proved to be too much, suggesting he is dealing with a deep thigh bruise. It is entirely possible he will not play in Week 2 against Detroit, especially considering one of his biggest strengths is speed. Pierre Garcon, Dante Pettis and Trent Taylor would all see more targets if Goodwin needs to miss the game.

Marquise Goodwin the No. 1 in San Fran?
WR staking claim as top target for Jimmy Garoppolo
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 2, 7:15 pm

San Francisco
A year ago, Marquise Goodwin became the No. 1 wideout after Pierre Garcon sustained a season-ending injury. Now, Garcon, the team’s most decorated pass-catcher, is back ... and Goodwin remains the 49ers’ top wide receiver. At least that’s the strong impression Goodwin has left his first five training-camp practices, sessions which have suggested he’s bound to build on his breakout season. To wit: It wasn’t news when Ahkello Witherspoon said Goodwin - not Garcon - was the toughest wideout to cover on the team. "When you can beat man coverage like that on almost any route we give you, and he’s catching it consistently, we’re excited about his year," Shanahan said. “And (we) expect him to get a lot of opportunities.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

FFToday's Take: The San Jose Mercury News is also saying basically the same thing about Goodwin. Durability has always been his biggest bugaboo as a pro. Last year, he was healthy at just the right time, and that may be just what he needed to take the next step. After a 56-catch campaign in 2017 - 24 of which came in Jimmy Garoppolo's five starts - Goodwin could be poised for 70-plus catches in 2018 if he truly overtakes Garcon as the top option in the offense.
