|A bowling ball of a runner out of Miami, James will battle to be the Bucs’ top backup running back in 2013. The rookie sixth-round pick has solid size at 5'11” and 22 pounds and was considered the favorite to land the role before the team signed veteran free agent Peyton Hillis. The Bucs are a young team, however, and we suspect that Hillis is little more than insurance in the event that James doesn't measure up. Whoever wins the role isn't expected to eat into Doug Martin's touches, so James is likely waiver-wire material in almost all formats.
Comment: There is no real handcuff to Doug Martin at this point.
| Decision coming soon on Doug Martin -- Thu Nov 7 6:00 pm --|
Bucs reportedly leaning toward placing RB on IR
|The Bucs will make a decision on whether Doug Martin will play again this season prior to Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Indications are the Bucs are leaning toward placing Martin on season-ending injured reserve and scheduling surgery to have the torn labrum his left shoulder repaired within the next few weeks rather than risk further injury to their Pro Bowl tailback with the team off to an 0-8 start.
While no final decision was announced Thursday, Martin did not practice and has not played since injuring his left shoulder trying to make a catch in a 31-23 loss at Atlanta Oct. 20. (Tampa Bay Times)|
FF Today's Take: With little left to play for this season, the prudent move would be for Martin to get a head-start on a surgery that usually carries a six-month recovery timetable. Rookie Mike James is coming off his best day as a pro in Week 9 and will continue to serve as the feature back in Tampa.

Torn labrum, likely out for the season
|Buccaneers running back Doug Martin suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder in Sunday's loss to the Falcons and is expected to be out for an indefinite period.
The Bucs are hopeful the injury is not season-ending and do not plan to place him on the injured reserve at this time.
Martin was injured attempting to catch a pass in the third quarter of Sunday's game in Atlanta. He did not return. (Tampa Bay Times)|
FF Today's Take: Martin's disappointing second season is hardly all his fault given all the chaos in Tampa Bay, even if owners won't remember it that way. For what it is worth, HC Greg Schiano said Monday that he does not believe the injury is season-ending. Mike James was featured after the injury and is an asset as a receiver out of the backfield, meaning he should be able to maintain low-end RB2 upside in Martin's absence.
| Doug Martin unlikely to play -- Mon Oct 21 7:30 am --|
MRI on shoulder coming Monday
|Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin will have an MRI on his shoulder Monday and is unlikely to play Thursday against the Carolina Panthers, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. (ESPN)|
FF Today's Take: X-rays reportedly did not show a shoulder separation. Mike James would likely get the start Thursday night against the Panthers if Martin can't go.
