2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Geno Smith showed the typical rookie growing pains for most of his first season in the league. He finished the season barely eclipsing 3,000 yards and throwing for only 12 touchdowns against 21 interceptions. Buried in that abyss, however, was the young field general leading the way to impressive wins at Atlanta and at home against the rival Patriots, where he played very well. Perhaps more importantly for his 2014 prospects, Smith finished the year strong, leading the Jets to a 3-1 record in his last four games. During that four-week span, Smith threw for 790 yards with four touchdown passes and only two interceptions. He also rushed for 186 yards and three more touchdowns, making him a borderline QB1 candidate down the stretch. Reports from training camp have been mostly positive and his “battle” with Michael Vick for the starting job hasn't been a fair fight as the second-year player has received about 75 percent of the snaps with the first unit. The team added some weapons to help with Smith's development, most notably former Bronco Eric Decker. Smith was more of a pocket passer at West Virginia who was reluctant to leave the pocket despite his above-average athleticism. The team encouraged him to run more as the season progressed and Smith gained confidence tucking the ball away and taking off and it became a valuable weapon for the team. Smith finished the season with 366 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, despite not running much until the last quarter of the season. Smith should make some improvements as a passer and if he continues to run the ball, he isn't such a terrible option for your backup quarterback spot late in the draft.

Comment: Smith is penciled in as the Jets starter but smart money is on Vick getting a crack at the starting job at some point during the season.

Chris Johnson eclipses 100-yard mark
Jets total 277 rushing yards but lose to Dolphins
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Dec 2, 8:33 am

New York Jets
It was the best game of Chris Johnson's first season with the Jets -- 105 yards rushing on 17 carries as part of a running game that totaled a whopping 277 yards. But when the Jets had to have points at the end of the game to overcome Miami's 16-13 lead Monday night at MetLife Stadium, Johnson wasn't on the field and quarterback Geno Smith suddenly found himself in desperation mode. As much as the Jets would like to believe the ground-and-pound approach they took against the Dolphins worked superbly, it underlined an NFL axiom that says teams have to run to win but they have to pass to score points. The running game was effective from the start, mixing in several wide receiver reverses with the running of Johnson, who broke a 47-yarder that set up a 20-yard touchdown by Greg Salas on a reverse for a 7-0 lead, and Chris Ivory, who had 62 yards on 16 carries. "The offensive line was pushing those guys around," Johnson said. "They were giving all the running backs, not just myself, lanes to run. But the main thing is that we didn't get the victory." (Newsday)

FFToday's Take: Johnson looked like the CJ2K of old as he slashed through the Miami defense, but the presence of Ivory and the lack of scoring ability seriously dampens his prospects down the stretch. It's better just to avoid all the Jets offensive players at this point.

Vick benched, Geno Smith to start
Decision reportedly comes from GM
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 26, 11:30 am

New York Jets
In a surprise, the New York Jets have decided to return to Geno Smith as their starting quarterback, sending Michael Vick to the bench after only three starts. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: The Jets will Smith another opportunity but don't expect it to go well. The team is coming off an embarrassing loss to the Bills (38-3) and with head coach Rex Ryan a lame duck, the team is simply playing out the string. Expect the Dolphins pass rush to succeed on Monday night.

Injury Jets still deciding Week 13 starter
Rex Ryan weighing options after brutal loss
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Nov 25, 8:37 am

New York Jets
Not that either quarterback made a compelling case for the job, but Jets coach Rex Ryan said after Monday's 38-3 loss to the Bills that he isn't sure if Geno Smith or Michael Vick would start next Monday night at home against Miami. "We'll address that later," Ryan said. "I don't know yet. We'll figure it out. I want to see how they look (after evaluating the tape of Monday's game). Sometimes, you can have a feel and a sense of it on the field. When you watch the tape, maybe you see a different opinion. We'll take a look at it and do what we think is best." Smith replaced Vick with 4:57 remaining in the third quarter, when the Jets trailed 31-3. Smith did not play in either of the past two games, a loss to the Chiefs and a win over the Steelers. Ryan benched Smith in favor of Vick after Smith threw three first-quarter interceptions Oct. 26 against the Bills. At the time of his benching for the Kansas City game, Smith had committed 37 turnovers in his 24 career NFL games. On Monday night, Vick completed 7 of 19 passes for 76 yards and an interception. Vick almost threw two other picks. Smith completed 10 of 12 passes for 89 yards. Facing the Bills' formidable defensive line, Vick was sacked five times. Smith was sacked twice, though one was on the game's final play, when he ran out of bounds for a 4-yard loss while under pressure. "We also had some shots where I thought we really could've completed some passes," Ryan said when asked about Vick's lackluster stat line. "But it wasn't just (Vick). The protection, he was under duress almost the whole game." The Jets are 2-9, so their final five games will just be a slow trudge to the finish for Ryan, who almost certainly will be fired after the season. Will the Jets use these final five games to take one last look at Smith, and determine if he has a future with them? Or will they turn back to Vick, who hopes to prove he can remain on this team in 2015 and contend for the starting job? When Ryan benched Smith for Vick during the first Buffalo game, the coach named Vick the starter the next day for the following week's game at the Chiefs. Ryan is scheduled to speak with reporters Tuesday afternoon. Vick sustained a minor calf injury Monday night, but he could have continued to play. "I saw that he was hobbled a little bit, it looked like," Ryan said. "He was taking some hits, and I wanted to give Geno some shots out there, give him a chance. It wasn't told to me that (Vick) could not play. I just saw that he was hobbled a little bit there." Said Vick: "I got kicked in the calf, but it wasn't that bad. I could've come back, but coach told me I got knocked around a little bit and he just didn't want me out there." (NJ.com)

FFToday's Take: Neither Vick nor Smith is a recommended fantasy option at this point, but it could have an impact on how the other skill positions (and we use that term loosely) perform this week. Stay tuned.

Michael Vick announced as Week 9 starter
Geno Smith benched after throwing three first-quarter picks
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 27, 5:55 pm

New York Jets
The New York Jets made the only move they could reasonably make at quarterback for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. They are replacing the struggling Geno Smith with veteran Michael Vick. The Chiefs last season faced several quarterbacks making their first start after replacing a starter who was either injured or ineffective. This is the first such instance this season and it allows Vick to cross paths once again with Chiefs coach Andy Reid. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Vick was only marginally better than Smith in Week 8, failing to spot wide-open underneath receivers on several occasions while throwing an interception and committing two fumbles. In theory, Vick's ability to extend plays should give Percy Harvin and Eric Decker more time to get open, but Vick also appears to have regressed as a passer. The Jets' best chance to win in Week 9 is to ride Chris Ivory and the running game as long as possible.

Will NYJ turn to Michael Vick?
Geno Smith's mistakes may cost him starting job
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 23, 10:15 am

New York Jets
Geno Smith had his second multi-turnover game of the season, punctuated by a nightmarish pick-six 32 seconds in that set the tone in a 27-19 loss to the Bears. Smith’s second interception came in the end zone on an ill-advised pass intended for David Nelson. It was just another blow on a night filled with self-inflicted wounds that dropped Ryan’s team to 1-2, and has coaches considering it may be time to plug in Michael Vick. (New York Daily News)

FFToday's Take: Ryan didn’t rule out the possibility that Vick, who played one snap against the Bears, could become more involved. From a fantasy perspective, it's not a terrible idea to grab Vick as a medium-upside stash in deeper formats and two-QB leagues.
