2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Considering how the season ended for rookie Zac Stacy, it’s almost baffling that St. Louis took as long as they did to finally give him the starting gig. It seemed as if the coaching staff was set on giving every other player an opportunity before finally conceding the job to Stacy in Week 5. From that point on, Stacy was a top-10 fantasy running back, contributing both in rushing yardage as well as touchdowns. Stacy touched the ball 14 or more times in every game once he became “the guy” and rewarded his fantasy owners with the kind of consistency that typically only comes with elite-level running backs. Stacy has a chance to break into that category this season as he heads into training camp as the clear favorite to take the vast majority of carries. Head coach Jeff Fisher has also publicly proclaimed his trust in Stacy, even indicating that he should be in line to take at least 70 percent of the carries out of the St. Louis backfield. It has been a long time since a St. Louis player outside of Steven Jackson has been a fantasy force, but Stacy appears to have a good shot at doing that again in 2014. He will likely be an early second-round pick in most drafts and could even slip into the bottom end of the first round if there are any preseason setbacks for any of the backs ahead of him.

Benny Cunningham creating buzz in St. Louis
Second-year RB pushing Zac Stacy for playing time?
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 28, 5:25 pm

St. Louis Rams
If Benny Cunningham isnt challenging Zac Stacy for the starting job, hes certainly pushing him for playing time. Hes been the best Rams RB on the field this preseason. And what to do with Tre Watts? A strong showing against the Dolphins could push him into a roster spot. If so, that would be five RBs on the squad again, which is a lot assuming Chase Reynolds makes the squad. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

FFToday's Take: Incumbent starter Zac Stacy has averaged 2.6 YPC on 15 attempts this preseason while Cunningham is sporting a solid 5.3 YPC on the same number of totes - averages that don't vary much from last season (Stacy - 3.9; Cunningham - 5.6). The preseason production itself is not a concern for Stacy owners; the fact that Cunningham is a more explosive player is. As a result, Cunningham is worth a late-round pick in fantasy drafts.

Injury As expected, Rams RB Stacy atop depth chart
Benny Cunningham slated for backup, Tre Mason third

St. Louis Rams
Isaiah Pead is officially on injured reserve, leaving Zac Stacy, Cunningham, Mason, Chase Reynolds and possibly Trey Watts as the Rams RBs. Watts performed well against Cleveland and will get another chance against Miami. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: The devastating loss of Sam Bradford leaves Shaun Hill as the Rams QB, which means Zac Stacy is likely to be the centerpiece of the offense, as he was down the stretch in 2013. He's a borderline RB1/2 with plenty of upside.

Injury Sam Bradford out for the year, ACL injury
Rams QB injures same knee as last season
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Aug 24, 4:00 pm

St. Louis Rams
The optimism of Saturday night has turned in a Sunday afternoon nightmare for the Rams. As ESPN reported and league sources have indicated to the Post-Dispatch, quarterback Sam Bradford does indeed have a torn ACL and is out for the season. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

FFToday's Take: Tough break for Bradford and the Rams. Shaun Hill becomes the starter at quarterback. Expect the Rams to be a run-heavy team this season with Bradford on the sidelines. The Rams' passing game wasn't expected to be a dominant force in the league anyway. Move Zac Stacy up a couple spots on your draft board.

Tre Mason's role difficult to project
Rams beat reporter suggests 8-10 carries per game
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jul 18, 3:00 pm

St. Louis Rams
"Hard to say right now but I think putting him (Tre Mason) in the eight to 10 carry per game range is probably about right. That means something like 140-160 carries. That's assuming health of course. Obviously, Stacy had some nagging injury issues in 2013. If that happens again, Mason's role expands." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Rams beat reporter Nick Wagoner suggested a limited role for Mason in a Friday chat. If Mason does carve out even an 8-10 touch role, it will have a negative effect on Zac Stacy's value bumping him down to low-end RB2 territory.
