2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
Spencer Ware is looking to return in 2018 after spending a full calendar year recovering from a torn PCL and LCL. It is important to note that this is not an ACL/MCL tear, but rather the more devastating PCL/LCL tear. Ware did participate in minicamp earlier this offseason, albeit on a limited basis, but the team believes that he will be ready for training camp, and thus ready to start the season. However, there is still a possibility that Ware does not make the Chiefs roster. Kansas City could save $1.5 million by cutting him and that is certainly an option if they see him trending toward not being ready to play at full strength.

If Ware is cut, it would likely be Charcandrick West who slots in again as the team's primary backup to starter Kareem Hunt, but West himself does not have much fantasy value unless Ware doesn't make the team and Hunt gets injured. There is also a possibility that offseason acquisitions Damien Williams or Kerwynn Williams beat out West for a roster spot, or end up replacing Ware if he gets cut.

At 5'10" and 230 lbs with a 4.67 forty yard dash time coming out of college, Ware is not much of an athletic specimen but he has produced in this Kansas City offense in the past when given the opportunity. Ware produced over 1,300 total yards in 2016 despite playing in just 14 games, and was a viable every week fantasy starter on a 12-4 Chiefs team that ruled the AFC West. Ware's career 4.6 yards per carry don't stick out as being anything particularly great but his knowledge of the offense should earn him the backup role in Kansas City if he's physically recovered from the knee injury that ended his 2017 season before it ever began. Ware is still just 26 years old and he's taken fewer than 600 carries through his college and professional career combined thus far, so there should still be plenty of tread on the tires. Still, given Hunt's tremendous success as a rookie, don't look for Ware to see more than 10 touches in many games this season, which really limits him to essentially being a handcuff to Hunt and likely an undrafted player in most leagues.

Injury Eric Berry, Spencer Ware taken off injury report
Ware returns from hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jan 18, 4:30 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Eric Berry will play for Chiefs on Sunday. He has no injury designation on their final injury report. The same goes for Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Spencer Ware. They will play. The only Chiefs who won't be available because of injury is LB Dorian O'Daniel. (Adam Teicher on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Ware's availability cuts into the ceiling of Damien Williams but we still expect Williams to see the bulk of the running back work for the Chiefs against the Patriots. Ware missed the last three games of the regular season and the Divisional Round playoff game with a hamstring injury.

Injury Chiefs getting healthy ahead of AFC Championship
Spencer Ware, Eric Berry among those practicing fully
By: Doug Orth | Thu Jan 17, 10:30 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
BR Spencer Ware (hamstring) and RB Laurent Duvernay-Tardif were limited in Wednesday’s practice but were upgraded today. And with S Eric Berry getting in a second straight day of full participation, he looks like he’s ready to go against the Patriots. (Pro Football Talk - Darin Gantt)

FFToday's Take: Ware has been sidelined since Week 14. Damien Williams has emerged as the clear lead back in Kansas City, but the threat of Ware stealing even a handful of touches could put a sizeable dent in Williams' fantasy upside. Berry's return figures to be bad news for Rob Gronkowski this weekend, as the Chiefs made a habit of using him to shadow tight ends when he was last healthy in 2016. Given their struggles against tight ends in his absence, the Chiefs figure to ask him to resume that role.

Injury Chiefs' Ware and Watkins limited on Wednesday
Status uncertain for Saturday
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jan 9, 4:00 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Spencer Ware and Sammy Watkins were limited at practice today. (Chiefs on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Ware has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury while Watkins hasn't played any meaningful snaps since Week 9 with a foot injury. Both are trending towards being active this week but we won't know for sure until Friday. Both will be undesirable fantasy options for the Divisional round.

Injury Spencer Ware Doubtful, Tyreek questionable
Chiefs likely to start Damien Williams at RB
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 12, 2:30 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
Tyreek Hill is listed as questionable to play for the Chiefs in Thursday night's game against the Chargers on their final injury report of the week. Eric Berry is questionable, Spencer Ware doubtful and Sammy Watkins out. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: The Chiefs will have Damien Williams, Darrel Williams and Charcandrick West at running back against the Chargers Thursday night. Damien Williams should be the lead back and good bet to return RB2 value. Hill is expected to play despite a foot injury suffered last week against the Ravens.

Chiefs release Kareem Hunt
Chiefs move swiftly in response to Hunt video
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 30, 9:00 pm

Kansas City Chiefs
“Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt. At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue. As part of our internal discussions with Kareem, several members of our management team spoke directly to him. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions. The video released today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately.” (Chiefs.com)

FFToday's Take: Well, that escalated quickly. It's been reported the Chiefs and the league had not seen the video that surfaced at TMZ today of Hunt pushing and kicking a woman back in February. The video coupled with the less than truthful conversations between Hunt and the Chiefs brass have lead to the running back's release. The Chiefs will move forward with Spencer Ware and Damien Williams atop the depth chart for the time being.
