2015 Outlook
Depth Chart
After a rookie campaign that showed flashes of feature back potential and a solid off-season, Devonta Freeman appears to be the leader in the clubhouse for the starting role in Atlanta’s backfield. The second-year back from Florida State will be in competition with rookie Tevin Coleman throughout the preseason, but it appears Freeman’s ability to pass protect as well as catch the ball out of the backfield are giving him the early edge to receive more snaps. With new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan at the helm, the Falcons are not only stressing "balance" in their offensive philosophy but are also implementing the famed "zone blocking scheme" that has made 1,000-yard backs out of the likes of Steve Slaton, Mike Anderson, and Olandis Gary. With more emphasis on the run game combined with Freeman’s explosive one-cut ability (which will be highlighted by the zone blocking scheme), look for Freeman to have some big games and keep the rookie at bay. Freeman will also provide more of a value in PPR leagues as he has earned high praise from the Falcons staff for his sure hands and crisp route running out of the backfield and slot position. Freeman is an intriguing option and could deliver solid RB2 fantasy output in the new look offense.

Injury Tevin Coleman sits Wednesday
Rib injury could keep ATL RB out Week 4
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 30, 1:00 pm

Atlanta Falcons
It seems as though round two of Devonta Freeman's run as the full-time running back for the Atlanta Falcons is upon us. While many were curious when Tevin Coleman could return from his rib injury, it's seeming unlikely to happen this week. According to the Falcons' official Twitter account, Coleman once again sat out practice on Wednesday. (Fox Sports)

FFToday's Take: Coleman's rib injury allowed Freeman to take over the starting running back job in Week 3. Freeman responded with 193 total yards and 3 TDs against the Cowboys. He'll be a RB2 with RB1 upside against the Texans if Coleman sits.

Injury Tevin Coleman out for Week 3
Rib injury may cost RB a couple weeks
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 25, 12:40 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn officially ruled out rookie running back Tevin Coleman and wide receiver/return specialist Devin Hester for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Coleman will likely miss a couple games after breaking a rib in last week's game against the Giants. Devonta Freeman now has a volume opportunity this week against an improved Dallas defense. He's a viable RB2 consideration.

Injury Tevin Coleman likely to miss at least two weeks
Fractured rib
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 21, 5:15 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons HC Dan Quinn said Monday that Tevin Coleman has a fractured rib and declined to put a timetable on the running back's return. Coleman's return depends on his pain threshold, Quinn said. While Quinn wouldn't put a time frame on Coleman's absence, the running back is expected to miss a couple of weeks. Coleman will sit out practices Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Quinn said. Quinn said he does not anticipate signing another running back at this time. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Despite Quinn's "anticipation" the Falcons will not add another back, it is likely they will; UDFA Terron Ward is the only other running back on the roster behind new starter Devonta Freeman. Atlanta expressed some interest in ex-Bronco Montee Ball earlier this month and could revisit signing him at some point this week.

Injury RB Devonta Freeman likely to sit versus Ravens
Several Falcons to miss exhibition season finale
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Sep 2, 4:14 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Wide receiver/teturner Devin Hester (toe), linebacker Justin Durant (foot), cornerback Desmond Trufant (shoulder), running back Antone Smith (hamstring), tight end Tony Moeaki (ankle), linebacker Joplo Bartu (quadriceps) and safety Robenson Therezie (quadriceps) were declared out for the game. Running back Devonta Freeman (hamstring) is not expected to play, but wasn’t declared out. Several other starters, like quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones, are not expected to play. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

FFToday's Take: Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman will battle for carries all season, however both players are recovering from pre-season hamstring injuries. Freeman has been limited since returning to practice but reports indicate he is progressing towards being 100 percent by Week One. At this point, health and competition are suppressing the fantasy appeal of both running backs to RB4 territory.

Falcons' rookie RB Coleman to start Saturday
First NFL game action for the first-year back
By: John Canario | Fri Aug 28, 6:20 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said Thursday that rookie RB Tevin Coleman is expected to make his preseason debut on Saturday at Miami. Coleman, like teammate Devonta Freeman, has been battling a hamstring injury all month. Freeman's status for Saturday is unclear. The injury situation has stalled what was expected to be an interesting position battle. But if Coleman has a good game this weekend, it could go a long way toward making him the Falcons' feature back, with Freeman playing a change-of-pace role. (Fox Sports)

FFToday's Take: Coleman, 22, currently has the upper hand on the starting job in Atlanta. The Falcons ranked 24th in rushing last season, and there's hope that Coleman will help improve upon the 93.6 rushing yards they averaged last year.

Injury Freeman, Coleman back at Falcons' practice
Young RBs recovering from hamstring injuries
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 17, 3:50 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, who are both recovering from hamstring injuries, returned to the individual portion of practice and were in full pads on Monday. Freeman and Coleman also did some extra running with the trainer. The Falcons are aiming to have them back for the third exhibition game on Aug. 29 at Miami, which is their regular season dress rehearsal. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

FFToday's Take: Along with Antone Smith, the Falcons' top three backs have all been sidelined by or currently dealing with hamstring injuries. It is becoming increasingly likely Atlanta will split carries between Freeman and Coleman to begin the season, which would make both players low-end RB3s at best behind an offensive line that figures to struggle opening running lanes. Smith could fall behind Terron Ward on the depth chart if he is unable to recover quickly.

Injury Devonta Freeman injures hamstring
Joins rookie Tevin Coleman on sidelines; likely sidelined for "a bit"
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 6, 6:20 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Falcons RB Devonta Freeman, who’s been receiving most of the plays with the first-team offense in training camp, suffered a hamstring injury in practice on Thursday. Freeman was running outside and was taken to the ground hard. He did not return to the action. The Falcons worked on their two-minute offense with Terron Ward, an undrafted rookie from Oregon State, as the running back with the first-team offense. Running back Tevin Coleman is also out with a hamstring strain. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

FFToday's Take: As a result of both players' hamstring injuries, we are unlikely to get any kind of clarity on the backfield situation in Atlanta before the end of the month - if even then. As such, it is starting to look more and more as if the Falcons will open the season splitting snaps between the two and might even mix in Antone Smith from time to time.

Injury Tevin Coleman sits with hamstring strain
Rookie in camp battle with Freeman for starting RB job
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Aug 5, 1:10 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Rookie running back Tevin Coleman did not practice on Wednesday. Coleman was out with a hamstring strain. Coleman is competing with second-year back Devonta Freeman to win to the starting slot. Coleman has received reps with the first-team offense. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

FFToday's Take: The injury isn't considered serious at this time but it might keep the rookie running back out of practice for a few days. Freeman currently sits atop the running back depth chart but both backs are expected to see action once the regular season begins.
