2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
After Doug Martin left in the offseason, the door was opened for Barber who ended the season with five straight games with more than 12 carries. During that stretch, he scored double digit fantasy points twice and he added one other double digit game because of two scores.

However, his fantasy value immediately dropped after the team used an early second round pick in the NFL draft on Ronald Jones. With the early reports that Jones is expected to become a workhorse back, this likely limits Barber to a pure handcuff option with limited upside even if he starts. Unless Jones is injured in the preseason, Barber is a player that can safely be ignored during most drafts.

Peyton Barber has edge on starting job
HC Dirk Koetter comments on RBs
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Aug 13, 1:00 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
After an underwhelming performance by rookie Ronald Jones in the preseason opener at Miami on Thursday in which Koetter said the second-round pick from Southern Cal was "average," it appears as though Peyton Barber has a good grip on the position. "Peyton is our starter," Koetter said Monday. "We're definitely going to use Ronald Jones and take advantage of what he's going to do. We do have the two veteran backs behind him. Again, we've got three more preseason games. Let's just let it sort out a little more." (Tampa Bay Times)

FFToday's Take: We'll see if these public comments are just a way to light a fire under rookie Ronald Jones but at this point he is definitely behind Barber on the depth chart. Koetter's comments suggest this situation is in flux. In any case, Barber is currently a bargain in fantasy drafts as the RB61 (14th round) in PPR leagues.

Tampa Bay likely to employ RBBC
Ronald Jones, Peyton Barber, Charles Sims to be involved
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jun 11, 7:40 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
(Ronald Jones) will go into training camp with every expectation of adding the big-play threat that's been sorely missed in the last two years. He'll share the load with third-year pro Peyton Barber, and Charles Sims will have a chance to keep the third-down role he held last season. Jones understanding the offense and pass protection and all a running back must do beyond just running the ball is a major prerequisite to him gaining the full trust of his coaches. Establish that now, and he's in line for a larger role earlier in his rookie season. (Tampa Bay Times - Greg Auman)

FFToday's Take: The faster Jones accomplishes the last part (understanding the offense and pass protection, etc.), the quicker he will emerge as the primary and perhaps every-down option in Tampa Bay. The Bucs have already said they envision Jones becoming a three-down back, and he possesses the kind of explosiveness the Bucs simply don't have otherwise. Jones may start out in a committee, but he seems like a pretty good bet to own the backfield before 2018 comes to a close.

Peyton Barber trimmed down over the winter
Improved diet and focused on improving speed
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jun 1, 9:10 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Peyton Barber didn’t lose any weight. He just turned fat into muscle and looks more sleek and sculpted than ever. Bucs RB coach Tim Spencer has seen Barber become a tick faster and more agile this offseason. "He's a pretty elusive big guy," Spencer said. "He is a very elusive big guy with quick feet and good vision, good hands - good everything. He's a good, solid football player. And obviously he does some (special) teams also, so he's a good football player. I like the way he runs." (Pewter Report)

FFToday's Take: Barber figures to open camp as a starter, but how long he can hold off explosive rookie Ronald Jones is the question. A committee in which Barber is the main short yardage/goal line back to begin the season seems likely, although Jones doesn't get enough credit for his ability to run inside the tackles. The Bucs should be much better running the ball in 2018, so if Barber somehow is declared a surefire starter before Week 1, he would very much be in the RB3 - if not RB2 - discussion.
