Carlos Hyde leaving in free agency would have been a great thing for Matt Breida's prospects as a fantasy contributor this season if the team hadn't immediately then signed Jerick McKinnon, an all-purpose back with explosive measurables. While he will likely still play a role in the 49ers offense, particularly in the running game, the chances of him usurping McKinnon for the lead role in the backfield seem low. Breida was effective when he caught passes as a rookie, but his catch rate was below 60 percent which is quite low, especially when compared to McKinnon's 75 percent rate.

Breida does have great speed and athleticism but at 195 lbs, one of the critiques on him coming out of college was that he lacks the size to be an every down workhorse at the NFL level. Still, 120 touches or so on the season seems reasonable for Breida, with the possibility of getting the biggest chunk of a multi-back committee in the event that McKinnon goes down with an injury. That doesn't leave a lot for fantasy upside, unfortunately, but head coach Kyle Shanahan has mentioned visions of McKinnon and Breida being San Francisco's version of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Breida would almost certainly be the Coleman in this situation, with an even lower workload, but that could still mean some splash plays here and there which could make him an interesting late-round selection in best ball formats.

Injury McKinnon to have MRI on knee
Injured in practice Sunday
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Aug 12, 3:30 pm

San Francisco
Just a handful of plays into the team portion of Sunday's practice, San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon came up grabbing at his right knee. After limping to the side to receive attention from the medical staff and sitting out the rest of practice, McKinnon was slated for an MRI to check for potential structural damage on Sunday afternoon, according to the team. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With Matt Breida already on the shelf until the season opener, the 49ers are hoping for good news on McKinnon's MRI. McKinnon signed autographs for fans after the injury and stated that he was fine but we'll await further details. Joe Williams and Raheem Mostert are the current healthy options on the depth chart.

No bell-cow role for Jerick McKinnon?
RB could have smaller role than expected
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 9, 5:50 pm

San Francisco
HC Kyle Shanahan definitely has a role in mind for Jerick McKinnon, but I don't think it's "bell-cow running back." McKinnon fits in a lot of ways, but Matt Breida should have a role in this offense too, and don't be surprised if there are weeks when Breida is the early-down guy and outscores McKinnon even in PPR leagues. (ESPN - Dan Graziano)

FFToday's Take: With all due respect to the owners who already drafted him thinking he was going to be a 250-carry back, he was added for his ability to create mismatches in the passing game just as much as he was to handle 200 carries. Owners need to set their expectations at the same level they have for Christian McCaffrey this year (160-plus carries, 70-plus receptions) and consider anything more from McKinnon gravy. In PPR leagues, that is still a recipe for a very good RB2. Breida is a big-time value in the 12th round right now.
