Depth Chart
Carlos Hyde leaving in free agency would have been a great thing for Matt Breida's prospects as a fantasy contributor this season if the team hadn't immediately then signed Jerick McKinnon, an all-purpose back with explosive measurables. While he will likely still play a role in the 49ers offense, particularly in the running game, the chances of him usurping McKinnon for the lead role in the backfield seem low. Breida was effective when he caught passes as a rookie, but his catch rate was below 60 percent which is quite low, especially when compared to McKinnon's 75 percent rate.

Breida does have great speed and athleticism but at 195 lbs, one of the critiques on him coming out of college was that he lacks the size to be an every down workhorse at the NFL level. Still, 120 touches or so on the season seems reasonable for Breida, with the possibility of getting the biggest chunk of a multi-back committee in the event that McKinnon goes down with an injury. That doesn't leave a lot for fantasy upside, unfortunately, but head coach Kyle Shanahan has mentioned visions of McKinnon and Breida being San Francisco's version of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Breida would almost certainly be the Coleman in this situation, with an even lower workload, but that could still mean some splash plays here and there which could make him an interesting late-round selection in best ball formats.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Breida and Garcon expected to play
Both listed as questionable for MNF
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Oct 15, 6:00 pm

Green Bay Packers
49ers' RB Matt Breida (shoulder, ankle), WR Pierre Garcon (shoulder, knee) and TE George Kittle (knee) -- all listed as questionable for tonight's game in Green Bay against the Packers -- all are expected to play, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: We expected Breida to miss this game as he's been nursing a sprained ankle since Week 5. It's unclear how big a role Breida will play tonight making him difficult to trust in fantasy lineups. His availability pulls down Alfred Morris' value as well.

Injury Matt Breida has mid-ankle sprain
Left in first quarter of Week 5 and did not return
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 8, 7:35 pm

San Francisco
The MRI on #49ers RB Matt Breida came back negative, according to a source. It’s considered more of a mid-ankle sprain, which is good news. He’s been battling a variety of injuries the past few weeks and has proven to be a quick healer. (Matt Maiocco on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: While owners should be happy to hear he didn't suffer the dreaded high-ankle sprain, Breida seems unlikely to serve a major role in Week 6 against the Packers. Making matters worse for owners is that San Francisco doesn't play until next Monday, so they could run the risk of getting nothing from him should he be considered a game-time decision and fail to play. Alfred Morris will likely draw the start and can be treated as a low-end RB2 in most leagues if Breida gets ruled out.

Injury Breida, Morris expected to play
Both listed as questionable
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 30, 11:45 pm

San Francisco
49ers’ running backs Matt Breida and Alfred Morris, both listed as questionable for Sunday with knee injuries, are expected to play vs. Chargers barring any setbacks, per source. Breida was further along physically at end of week than Morris, but both expected to go. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Breida appeared to suffer a serious knee injury against the Chiefs last week but later returned to the game. He was limited Friday. With both backs active, it's hard to trust either on in this matchup against the Chargers especially with Beathard at quarterback. Breida would be the preferred option in PPR leagues but only as a flex consideration.

Injury Jimmy Garoppolo done for the season
Torn ACL
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 24, 7:20 pm

San Francisco
MRI showed what 49ers feared: Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL and his season is over, per source. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: C.J. Beathard is expected to lead the team the rest of the way. It's a crushing blow for a team that was supposed to take a huge step forward in 2018 and could effectively end whatever breakout potential Marquise Goodwin had. Expect the 49ers to rely heavily on Matt Breida and Alfred Morris going forward, and owners shouldn't be overly surprised if George Kittle ends up as the team's top option in the passing game. Regardless, Beathard promotion is a downgrade for the entire offense.

Injury Jerick McKinnon suffers injury during workout
Severity unknown
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 1, 3:45 pm

San Francisco
Hearing from multiple sources that #49ers running back Jerick McKinnon was injured during a team workout today. Am working on getting more details. No details from the team yet but source said injury "did not look good." If McKinnon can't play vs. Vikings, Matt Breida, Alfred Morris obviously would have bigger roles. Kyle Shanahan to have cut-down con call at 1:05 p.m. (Matt Barrows on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Uh-oh. The team recently signed Alfred Morris and if McKinnon were to miss any time, the 49ers would likely go with a Breida / Morris combo to begin the season with Breida having more value in PPR leagues. Stay tuned...

Injury McKinnon to have MRI on knee
Injured in practice Sunday
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Aug 12, 3:30 pm

San Francisco
Just a handful of plays into the team portion of Sunday's practice, San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon came up grabbing at his right knee. After limping to the side to receive attention from the medical staff and sitting out the rest of practice, McKinnon was slated for an MRI to check for potential structural damage on Sunday afternoon, according to the team. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With Matt Breida already on the shelf until the season opener, the 49ers are hoping for good news on McKinnon's MRI. McKinnon signed autographs for fans after the injury and stated that he was fine but we'll await further details. Joe Williams and Raheem Mostert are the current healthy options on the depth chart.

No bell-cow role for Jerick McKinnon?
RB could have smaller role than expected
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 9, 5:50 pm

San Francisco
HC Kyle Shanahan definitely has a role in mind for Jerick McKinnon, but I don't think it's "bell-cow running back." McKinnon fits in a lot of ways, but Matt Breida should have a role in this offense too, and don't be surprised if there are weeks when Breida is the early-down guy and outscores McKinnon even in PPR leagues. (ESPN - Dan Graziano)

FFToday's Take: With all due respect to the owners who already drafted him thinking he was going to be a 250-carry back, he was added for his ability to create mismatches in the passing game just as much as he was to handle 200 carries. Owners need to set their expectations at the same level they have for Christian McCaffrey this year (160-plus carries, 70-plus receptions) and consider anything more from McKinnon gravy. In PPR leagues, that is still a recipe for a very good RB2. Breida is a big-time value in the 12th round right now.
