2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
Oh how much fun this backfield could be if there was a true workhorse. You can't blame the coaching staff for splitting carries between the two backs, but drafters can wonder about the potential for either Coleman or Freeman if the other one weren't around. Coleman set a career high with 156 carries and maintained a 4 yards per carry average with the additional work. While it was a noticeable drop of nearly 25 fantasy points for the season, Coleman still managed a RB2 finish despite the overall scoring problems with the offense.

Entering 2018, it's likely that Coleman continues to get a bigger workload and entering the final year of his contract, it's possible that the team could utilize him without caution particularly if this is his last season with the team. Currently, he's being drafted as the RB31 which indicates that most drafters believe he's the premier handcuff with RB3 standalone value. But if the offense can rebound as a whole, it has sustained multiple RB2s and he's a strong candidate to benefit. At the back of the 6th round, Coleman is maybe the best bargain of the Atlanta RBs.

Injury Devonta Freeman placed on IR
Groin surgery
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Oct 16, 12:55 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Big loss from Falcons as they are going to place Devonta Freeman on IR today (Jay Glazer)

FFToday's Take: In addition to his groin, Freeman has suffered a foot injury in 2018. He's eligible to return from the IR given we're heading into Week 6 he has very little fantasy value at this point. Tevin Coleman and Ito Smith should share the bulk of the running back duties moving forward.

Injury Devonta Freeman unlikely to go in Week 7
Matt Bryant also expected to miss game as well
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 15, 4:25 pm

Atlanta Falcons
HC Dan Quinn said Matt Bryant strained his hamstring, he'll likely be out this week as will Devonta Freeman with a groin injury. (Kelsey Conway on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Falcons are likely looking ahead to their Week 8 bye to give their top running back some more recovery time, but the fact they're already considering him unlikely for Week 7 isn't the greatest of news. Tevin Coleman has been decent as a lead back during Freeman's absences, but he's not making a great case to get paid as a free agent in the offseason. Consider Coleman a low-end RB2 in Week 7 and Ito Smith a serviceable flex.

Injury Devonta Freeman out for Week 6
Foot injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 12, 12:15 pm

Atlanta Falcons
#Falcons coach Dan Quinn declared RB Devonta Freeman, DT Grady Jarrett and Derrick Shelby OUT. (Orlando Ledbetter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Freeman missed practice this week and is reportedly dealing with a foot and groin injury. Expect Tevin Coleman to start with Ito Smith filling a backup role. Coleman typically sees around 18-22 touches with Freeman out. With this game expected to be a shootout, Coleman is a solid RB2 play with RB1 upside if he finds the endzone.

Injury Devonta Freeman's status up in the air
Foot injury keeping Falcons RB out of practice
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Oct 11, 9:45 am

Atlanta Falcons
Devonta Freeman did not practice on Wednesday and was listed on the official injury report. “His foot is sore,” Quinn said about Freeman. “He was able to do some work off to the side (on Wednesday). He’ll probably participate in some of the walk-through today. But with the soreness we are going to see how it responds over the next day and a half. Certainly, he’s frustrated that he’s got the sore foot, but the good news is that it is not something that’s long-term or any re-aggravation of anything that he’s had prior.” (Atlanta Jounal Constitution)

FFToday's Take: Freeman missed practice Wednesday and appears to be on the wrong side of questionable this week with a foot injury. If he misses, Tevin Coleman and Ito Smith would handle the backfield workload. Coleman would be a solid RB2 option in a game with a high over/under (57.0).

Injury Devonta Freeman expected to play
Hasn't played since Week 1
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 3, 7:30 am

Atlanta Falcons
#Falcons coach Dan Quinn says on 92.9 The Game that RB Devonta Freeman (knee) is expected to play Sunday vs. the #Steelers, but DT Grady Jarrett (ankle) will be out. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Freeman hasn't played since Week 1 after spraining the MCL and PCL in his knee. He'll step into a great matchup against the Steelers which should be a high-scoring affair. Expect Freeman and Tevin Coleman to share the workload in Week 5.

Uncertain timeline for Devonta Freeman
Missed Week 2 with knee injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 17, 7:40 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Dan Quinn said he's not sure on the timetable with Devonta Freeman coming off knee injury. (ESPN - Vaughn McClure)

FFToday's Take: About the only thing we know for sure with Freeman right now is that he aggravated the MCL and PCL injury that slowed him down the stretch last year. Owners should probably expect him to miss at least the next two games, while a month-long absence also sounds possible. Tevin Coleman makes for a very serviceable RB2 in the meantime, while Ito Smith appears to have moved into Coleman's old role for now.

Injury Devonta Freeman to miss Week 2
Knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 14, 11:30 am

Atlanta Falcons
Falcons running back Devonta Freeman (sore RIGHT knee) will not play against the Panthers on Sunday, coach Dan Quinn said Friday. Freeman, who suffered a sprained posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee in the regular-season final against Carolina, was slowed in the playoffs. He didn’t have offseason surgery and was hit on the same knee late in the season opener against Philadelphia. He was pulled from the game and didn’t practice at all this week. (Atlanta Jounal Constitution)

FFToday's Take: This could be an issue for Freeman past Week 2 even though there is nothing structurally wrong with his knee but for the time being, Tevin Coleman will operate as the Falcons lead back and should flirt with 20 touches against the Panthers making him a solid RB2.

Injury Freeman misses practice Thursday
Tevin Coleman could carry the load
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 13, 11:46 am

Atlanta Falcons
Falcons running back Devonta Freeman (sore knee) will be held out of practice on Thursday, according to coach Dan Quinn. The Falcons are preparing for running back Tevin Coleman to carry most of the load. If Freeman can’t play, he’ll be backed up by Ito Smith. (Atlanta Jounal Constitution)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like Freeman is trending towards being inactive this week after suffering a knee injury in Week 1. Coleman would be solid RB2 against the Panthers if Freeman does sit. In three games last season operating as the lead back, Coleman racked up 21, 21, and 19 touches.

Injury Devonta Freeman misses practice Wednesday
Knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 12, 2:00 pm

Atlanta Falcons
Falcons running back Devonta Freeman, who was hit late in the Eagles’ game and has a sore knee, will be held out of practice Wednesday, according to coach Dan Quinn. “Free is sore and we’ll hold him from practice today,” Quinn said. “He got hit in the game, but nothing that’s more than we can treated it goes from day to day. Freeman played 39 of 70 offensive snaps (56 percent), while Tevin Coleman played 36 of 70 snaps (51 percent). (Atlanta Jounal Constitution)

FFToday's Take: This doesn't appear to be a serious injury but we'll have to monitor Freeman's practice reports throughout the week. Tevin Coleman would see increased usage if Freeman were to miss Week 2 against the Panthers. Running back Brian Hill as added from the practice squad.
