2018 Outlook
Depth Chart
Few players have a higher upside for total touches in 2018 than Melvin Gordon. Although Austin Ekeler saw significant playing time in 2017, the Chargers still opted to give Gordon the ball, either as a runner or receiver, an average of 21.4 times per game in 2017, and that was on a team that missed the playoffs. With the NFL the way it is now, it simply isn't easy to come by a player with this type of workload and it's an amount that that a few of backs being selected ahead of him in drafts simply are not likely to see. The aforementioned Ekeler and rookie Justin Jackson both have the capability to take some touches from Gordon, but neither is a serious threat to take over the role as the team's primary ball carrier.

Gordon's workload makes him a very safe option at the end of the first or early second round, but his inefficiency is a bit concerning when it comes to upside to finish as a truly elite option at the position. Despite finishing with a dozen total touches in each of his past two seasons, Gordon is yet to reach even 4.0 yards per carry in a season. His career average sits at a paltry 3.8 yds per carry. The bright side is that the Chargers don't seem to be worried as they continue to feed him a heavy workload, especially near the goal line, but there is still some reason to be concerned.

Most analysts project the Chargers to be at least a bit better from a defensive standpoint than they were in 2017, which should also help create some positive game scripts and potentially more touches for Gordon. A presumably improved offensive line that now includes Mike Pouncey and 2017 second-round pick Forrest Lamp should lead the way to Gordon being a solid RB1 in all formats this season.

Injury Ekeler limited Friday, expected to play
Melvin Gordon off injury report
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jan 4, 2:41 pm

Chargers injury report - OUT: LB Jatavis Brown (ankle). DOUBTFUL: NT Brandon Mebane (not injury related). QUESTIONABLE: Austin Ekeler (groin). Ekeler was a limited participant in practice on Friday but expected to play on Sunday. (Eric Williams on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Melvin Gordon has been removed from the injury report which is a good sign although it's likely he's not at 100 percent. Ekeler will be a flex option against the Ravens who gave up 7 catches and 47 yards to Justin Jackson in the receiving game when these two teams met two weeks ago.

Injury Gordon, Hunter Henry likely to go in WC game
RB injured knee in Week 17, TE set to return from ACL surgery
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 31, 6:00 pm

Despite limping off in Sunday’s fourth quarter, Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is expected to play Sunday against the Ravens, per source. Chargers TE Hunter Henry, who tore his ACL during the off-season, also is expected to play Sunday against the Ravens, per source. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: For the second time this season, Gordon got hurt on a needless play (Chargers knew they likely had nothing to gain from a win or loss when the injury happened). Fortunately, it appears they avoided a multi-week injury this time. The bigger story here is Henry, who tore his ACL in May. It's hard imagining him being all that effective after returning to practice only two weeks ago and not playing a regular-season snap, but his presence could be a bit of a boost against a very good defense.

Injury Austin Ekeler likely back after two-game absence
Neck, concussion issues
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 24, 6:25 pm

The Chargers got running back Melvin Gordon back in the lineup against the Ravens on Saturday night, but his presence wasn’t enough to get them past Baltimore. They can still wind up as division champs if they beat the Broncos and the Raiders beat the Chiefs in Week 17 and it looks like they’ll be able to use Austin Ekeler at running back along with Gordon. Head coach Anthony Lynn said on Monday that he expects Ekeler to play in the regular season finale. He’s missed the last two games while in the concussion protocol and has been a productive runner and receiver when called upon this season. (Pro Football Talk - Josh Alper)

FFToday's Take: Justin Jackson capably filled in as Melvin Gordon's change-of-pace back in Week 16, but the Chargers seem to prefer Ekeler's big-play ability over Jackson. Ekeler wasn't doing much in fantasy in a few weeks prior to his injury or Gordon's, but he's always a good bet for about 5-10 touches and a score about every two or three games. With the depressed slate of running backs in Week 17, Ekeler might be worth starting in deeper PPR leagues.

Injury Melvin Gordon likely good to go for Week 16
Expected to see limited work in practice Monday
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 17, 4:15 pm

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said Melvin Gordon (knee) will be limited in practice on Monday, and was close to playing last week against the Chiefs. “If we would have played that game on Sunday, he probably would have played,” Lynn said. (ESPN - Eric D. Williams)

FFToday's Take: The decision to sit Gordon last Thursday came right down to pregame warmups, and it appeared he was confident in the few moves he made with the camera on him. Although this week's matchup against the Baltimore Ravens isn't a great one, Gordon has emerged as a weekly threat to top 100 yards and should be considered no worse than a top-eight option.

Injury Melvin Gordon will not play Week 15
Will miss third straight game with knee injury.
By: Doug Orth | Thu Dec 13, 7:15 pm

RB Melvin Gordon is officially inactive tonight. He won’t play for a third-straight week. (BJ Kissel on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: According to various reports, the decision came down to pre-game warmups, but either Gordon or the coaching staff didn't feel quite right about playing him. With Austin Ekeler already ruled out, seventh-round rookie Justin Jackson is setting up for a potential surprise top-10 play at running back this week against one of the worst defenses against running backs in the Chiefs. Detrez Newsome should mix in, but Jackson is in line for 20-plus touches if he starts out hot Thursday.

Injury Ekeler out, Melvin Gordon questionable
Gordon a gametime decision
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 12, 2:45 pm

Melvin Gordon (knee) questionable for Thursday and likely a game-time decision. Austin Ekeler (concussion, neck) has been ruled out. (Eric Williams on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Melvin Gordon has been described as a gametime decision with a knee injury. Gordon did travel with the team. Justin Jackson would likely see significant snaps if Gordon is ruled out and would be an RB2 against a leaky Chiefs run defense.

Injury Chargers "not optimistic" Melvin Gordon will play
Backfield also likely to be without Austin Ekeler (concussion) Week 15
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Dec 11, 12:58 pm

Steve Wyche (@wyche89) on Twitter: "The Chargers are not optimistic that running backs Melvin Gordon (knee) and Austin Ekeler (neck, concussion) will be ready for Thursday's huge AFC West matchup at Kansas City, HC Anthony Lynn told me. Rookie RBs Justin Jackson and Detrez Newsome likely to be the spot" (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Oh boy. Fantasy owners hoping to have Gordon (or at least Ekeler) available for Week 15 will have to look elsewhere. Jackson remains a solid RB2/3 fantasy option with plenty of upside in the Chargers offense.

Injury Austin Ekeler unlikely to play Week 15
Shoulder/neck stinger
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 10, 9:35 pm

RB Austin Ekeler extremely doubtful for Thursday due to bruised nerve in neck. (Joe Reedy on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Ekeler is officially day-to-day, but his history of stingers and a short turnaround (Thursday in Kansas City) are probably the main reasons why he is being deemed "extremely doubtful." The hope is Melvin Gordon will be able to go this week after missing the last two games, but Justin Jackson would appear to be in line for a heavy workload against the Chiefs if that ends up not being the case.

Injury Melvin Gordon to miss a few weeks
Grade 2 MCL sprain
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Nov 26, 7:00 am

#Chargers star RB Melvin Gordon was diagnosed with a grade 2 MCL sprain suffered in yesterday’s blowout win, sources say. He had his MRI last night. Gordon is out the next few weeks, but should be back before the end of the regular season if all goes well. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Gordon came into Week 12 dealing with knee and hamstring injuries and left with an MCL sprain. In his absence Austin Ekeler and rookie Justin Jackson will handle the running back duties with Ekeler being a weekly RB2 option. The Chargers upcoming schedule includes: @PIT, CIN, @KC, BAL.

Eagles to feature RB Josh Adams?
Adams in the RB2 conversation
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 25, 9:40 am

Philadelphia Eagles
From @NFLGameDay: The #Eagles are planning to feature RB Josh Adams as their starter going forward, an impressive rise for the former UDFA from Notre Dame... and #Chargers RB Melvin Gordon, listed as questioanable, is set to play today. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Sounds like the Eagles coaching staff has realized that Adams is their best back and should see the bulk of the work in their backfield. We'll see how the snap counts and usage counts look today between Adams, Wendell Smallwood and Corey Clement. Adams is in the RB2 conversation.

Injury Melvin Gordon expected to play
Hamstring and knee injuries
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 25, 7:00 am

Chargers’ RB Melvin Gordon, listed as questionable for Sunday due to knee and hamstring injuries, plans to play vs. Cardinals, per source. Gordon convinced coaches this weekend to give him a chance, despite some organizational interest in resting him for maintenance. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Gordon is going to give it a go in a prime matchup against the Cardinals. He's worth starting but does carry some risk of being limited if he gets a little nicked up. The Cardinals are giving up the 3rd most fantasy points to running backs.

Injury Melvin Gordon, Tyrell Williams questionable
Gametime decisions
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Nov 24, 8:45 am

RB Melvin Gordon (hamstring, knee), WR Tyrell Williams (quad) and DT Brandon Mebane (not injury related) all were listed as questionable by the Chargers as they host the Cardinals on Sunday. Williams and Gordon likely will be game-time decisions. Both were limited participants on Friday, while Mebane did not practice for a second straight day due to a personal matter. Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said Gordon is dealing with a sore knee. “Most starting runners this time of year are sore or something’s wrong,” Lynn said. “So we’ll have to decide if it’s worth holding him back or just letting him go.” (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Gordon was limited on Thursday and Friday raising questions about his workload on Sunday even if he does play. The Chargers may decide they can beat the lowly Cardinals without their star running back. If Gordon sits, Austin Ekeler would move into the RB2 conversation.
