2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
Other than being slightly more efficient on the ground last year, Duke Johnson has been the exact same player during his two years in the league. Drafted in 2015 to be a receiving threat out of the backfield, Johnson has lived up to the role, finishing with the 4th and 6th most receptions among running backs in his two years with the Browns. With Isaiah Crowell handling the early down and goal line work, Johnson is left to fight for scraps. A more direct route to playing time could come in the slot, where he's worked at times this off-season. Cleveland doesn't have a reliable slot receiver, and Johnson is comfortable running routes. An uptick in targets and receptions could definitely make him more attractive in PPR formats, but his lack of touchdowns (3 career) and consistent backfield work make him a FLEX player at best in standard formats.

Duke Johnson the Browns' new offensive weapon?
HC: "He is just doing everything."
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 31, 8:45 pm

Cleveland Browns
Browns HC Hue Jackson raised some eyebrows on Sunday when he was asked if RB Duke Johnson is spending time in wide receivers meetings. "He stays with me. He is with me all of the time. ... He is just doing everything, honestly. He can catch out of the backfield. He runs the ball. We line him up in different places where we can get an advantage with him. He is a weapon for us. We are just trying to use him as much as we can, and we do," Jackson said. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

FFToday's Take: Johnson has been underutilized in each of his first two seasons, especially last year. Given the current state of the Browns' offense, Jackson would be wise to get Johnson's touches back in the 160-170 range. Isaiah Crowell will remain the early-down horse, but Johnson will be a PPR asset if he can run at least 100 times behind Cleveland's offensive line and finish with at least 50 catches again.

Duke Johnson the next slot receiver in Cleveland?
Beat reporters anticipate elevated receiving role for Duke
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Jul 23, 10:00 am

Cleveland Browns
Hue Jackson will have to plan his passing attack around his wideouts, his top two tight ends in Seth DeValve and David Njoku, and his all-purpose back in Duke Johnson, who has been lining up as a slot receiver. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

FFToday's Take: With Corey Coleman and Kenny Britt likely to hold down the two outside receiving spots, there's speculation among the Browns beat reporters that Johnson could replace Andrew Hawkins as the primary slot receiver. Johnson's rushing attempts dropped from 104 in 2015 to 74 in 2016. Increased time in slot would boost Johnson's value in PPR leagues where's he's currently being drafted in Round 10.
