2017 Outlook
Depth Chart
A talented and physical running back that set the NCAA single-season rushing record (427 yards) in 2014, Perine landed in an interesting spot behind Rob Kelley in the Redskins backfield. With a comparison of Michael Turner by some NFL scouts, Perine does not have the shiftiness of a Le'Veon Bell or the burst of a young Adrian Peterson, but he is a powerful runner similar to Kelley that will fit will in Jay Gruden's rushing scheme. He's the favorite to spell Kelley on early downs and has an outside shot to take over the starting role at some point during the season.

HC Gruden: We'll be "careful" with Chris Thompson
Washington RB will get more touches, but not full-time work
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 19, 10:59 am

Washington Redskins
Jay Gruden's comments on Chris Thompson: "But he's so important to us on third down we just have to be careful," he said. "He's not the biggest guy in the world. We don't want him to get 20-25 carries a game and get a lot of pounding on that body. He's definitely needed in pass protection and the routes and all that stuff on third down and red zone. So we'll try to expand his role a little bit, but we don't want to go too crazy with him." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With Rob Kelley nursing a cartilage rib injury, Thompson could see an increased workload, but won't be the full-time back -- as Samaje Perine will handle much of the standard rushing duties in early downs. Both Perine and Thompson should be owned in 12-team leagues, with Thompson the more valuable back right now, especially in PPR formats.

Redskins finally release RB Matt Jones
Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine the RBs to own in Washington
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 2, 2:00 pm

Washington Redskins
The Redskins have finally ended running back Matt Jones’s tenure a year after handing him the starting job. Jones lost his job halfway through last season after failing to cure his fumbling woes. Rob Kelley replaced him in the lineup, and team officials entered the offseason with plans to stick with Kelley as the starter and also used a fourth-round pick on Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine. (Washington Post)

FFToday's Take: The writing was on the wall early in the off-season and today the Redskins finally made it official. If he can get a handle on his fumbling issues, Jones could carve out a role with another team.

Matt Jones fighting for roster spot
Redskins taking six RBs to training camp
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jun 28, 10:30 am

Washington Redskins
As it stands, the Redskins will carry six backs into training camp next month in Richmond: Kelley, Perine, third-down specialist Chris Thompson, Brown, Matt Jones and Keith Marshall. Jordan wants to see Jones fight to distinguish himself among them. "Matt has played some football and made some plays for us early in his career. So now, it’s about just rekindling what he had before." (Washington Post)

FFToday's Take: Jones was benched midway through last season for fumbling issues and didn't take it very well. The Redskins reportedly attempted to trade Jones prior to the draft and Jones missed voluntary workouts this off-season. For now, he's on the outside looking in at Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine and Thompson.
