2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Tony Romo underwent back surgery to repair a herniated disc in December, but is expected to be 100 percent by the start of training camp. Head Coach Jason Garrett believes Romo is in the prime of his career, but considering the quarterback is now 34 years old, that statement is likely May/June “coach speak.” On the plus side, the Cowboys have hired Scott Linehan as their new passing-game coordinator, a move the veteran Romo is reported to be thrilled with. Under Linehan, the Lions' Matthew Stafford averaged 4,885 passing yards over the last three seasons, and he never attempted fewer than 630 passes. Contrast that with Romo, who has only surpassed 550 attempts once in his career. Romo is perpetually underrated in fantasy circles and should prove to once again be a boon for owners who wait on drafting a QB. In four of his eight seasons as an NFL starter, he has topped 4,000 yards in passing, and he threw for 3,828 yards with 31 TDs in 15 games last season. If his attempts were to rise significantly under Linehan, Romo could put up a career year even at 34 years of age.

Comment: Romo (back) will be watched closely during training camp. He'll be moving up the rankings as his progress improves.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Romo practices Friday, listed as Probable
Signs point to Romo starting
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 7, 11:30 am

Dallas Cowboys
Though Tony Romo won’t be pushed Friday, he did take all the offensive work with no defensive pressure early in practice Friday and made all of the throws. Brandon Weeden wasn’t doing any of that. So all signs still point to Romo starting Sunday. (Dallas Morning News)

FFToday's Take: With a bye next week, it's somewhat surprising that Romo is in line for the start on Sunday. In any case, expect the Cowboys to pound the running game against a Jaguars defense that just gave up 154 yards and 2 TDs to Jeremy Hill in Week 9.

Injury Tony Romo makes London trip
Cowboys QB could still play Week 10
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Nov 4, 9:30 am

Dallas Cowboys
Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty can relate to what Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is going through with his latest back injury. Petty suffered two cracks in the transverse process in his back this year and it caused him to miss a game. When asked during a Monday press conference if he had any advice for Romo, Petty joked, “he can call me if he wants.” “Everybody deals with it different,” Petty added. “What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. He’ll be fine, like I am. As far as a back injury to have, this is the one to have. It kind of heals itself. He has all the good people up there to help him out, just like I had the people down here to help [me] out.” Petty suffered the injury in the season opener against SMU. He didn’t play the following week against Northwestern State but returned the following week and has played in every game since. Romo suffered a pair of transverse process fractures in his back on Oct. 27. The Cowboys quarterback did not play in Sunday’s 28-17 loss to Arizona and his availability for this weekend’s game in London remains in question. (Dallas Morning News)

FFToday's Take: The venerable Romo has a little more wear and tear on his back than Petty, but given how awful the passing game looked in Week 9, the Cowboys will do everything they can to get him on the field. If he plays, he's in the conversation again as a QB1.

Injury Romo out, Brandon Weeden to start
Back injury will keep Cowboys' QB on the sideline
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 2, 9:30 am

Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will not play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, a source confirmed to ESPN. Romo suffered two transverse process fractures in last week's loss to the Washington Redskins, according to sources. While there can be no further damage, Romo did not practice all week and remained in a good amount of pain later in the week. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: The Cowboys have a bye in Week 11 so there is a possibility that Romo will sit the next two games. With Brandon Weeden at quarterback expect the Cowboys to have a run-heavy approach meaning slight downgrades for Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams.

Injury Romo has two small fractures in back
Still has a chance to play
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Nov 1, 6:38 pm

Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered two fractured transverse process in his back in the loss to the Washington Redskins, but there remains a chance he could play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple sources. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Romo missed practice all week and the Cowboys have said that he will be a gametime decision. Brandon Weeden would get the start against the Cardinals if Romo sits. Look for the Cowboys to have a run-heavy gameplan regardless of who takes snaps from center. Romo owners should making other plans at the quarterback position.

Injury Romo misses practices Fri, gametime decision
Back injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 31, 12:25 pm

Dallas Cowboys
Tony Romo is missing his third straight day of practice with a back injury and could be a game-time call against the Cardinals. "We've still got about 48 hours to the game," coach Jason Garrett said, "so we're going to give him every chance." (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Romo has missed practice all week and it might be wise to sit him this week against the Cardinals. Brandon Weeden would get the start if Romo doesn't play. The Cowboys play at 1 Eastern on Sunday.

Injury Tony Romo says 'I'll be good to go'
Dealing with minor rib and ankle injuries
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Oct 15, 6:08 pm

Dallas Cowboys
Quarterback Tony Romo believes he will be able to practice later this week and said he will play Sunday afternoon against the New York Giants. Romo was held out of Wednesday's practice for the fifth consecutive week. But unlike previous absences, where he concentrated on core exercises to strengthen his back, Romo is nursing injuries to his rib and ankle. Head coach Jason Garrett said he's hopeful that Romo will be able to return to practice Thursday. (Dallas Morning News)

FFToday's Take: Fantasy owners can expect to have Romo playing in a huge rivalry game against the Giants this weekend. Nonetheless, he remains a risky long term investment with injuries starting to pile up.

Injury Tony Romo misses practice with back injury
Back still a concern even after past surgeries
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Sep 17, 7:53 pm

Dallas Cowboys
Romo sat out Wednesday's practice with "back tightness" although coach Jason Garrett and Romo anticipate he'll return to practice on Thursday. Either way, it's a concern that Romo can't get fully healthy. (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: This appears to be normal rest associated with continued back issues for Dallas' signal caller but should serve as a reminder that Tony Romo carries injury risk. As a result, fantasy owners would be wise to invest in a capable backup.
