2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
The Texans' decision to not draft a quarterback with the top overall selection in this year's NFL Draft has defined their offseason. Instead of talking about potential and talent at the quarterback position, fantasy owners are left reading words like “stopgap” and “game manager.” Fitzpatrick was unable to carry fantasy appeal after a strong start to the 2011 season as a member of the Bills and he failed to inspire in 11 contests as a replacement to Jake Locker in 2013. Interceptions have long plagued him and new head coach Bill O'Brien will certainly try to help his starting quarterback mitigate those errors this year. Throwing to future Hall of Famer Andre Johnson and emerging playmaker DeAndre Hopkins will give the nine-year veteran signal caller his best group of targets as a pro. That might not be enough to make him worthy of QB1 status but he should be a readily available plug-and-play option for a team that should do well in the field position game. The Texans will make University of Houston alum Case Keenum the second-stringer to open the season after letting go of T.J. Yates prior to training camp. If Keenum starts, the entire offense will take a hit in terms of production. Rookie fourth-rounder Tom Savage has the size and arm to be developed into a quality pocket passer but should not be a factor into the team's plans for another couple of years.

Injury Ryan Fitzpatrick to start for Houston
Texans sign Thad Lewis, place Mallett on IR
By: Jake Gordon | Wed Nov 26, 4:52 pm

Houston Texans
HOUSTON -- The Texans placed quarterback Ryan Mallett on injured reserve on Wednesday, meaning Ryan Fitzpatrick will start on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Fitzpatrick started the first nine games, with a 4-5 record, before being benched during the bye week in favor of Mallett, who went 1-1 as the starter. Also on Wednesday, the Texans signed free-agent quarterback Thad Lewis, who was released by the Bills in training camp (ESPN.com)

FFToday's Take: Despite keeping things conservative through the air, Ryan Fitzpatrick has thrown at least one touchdown pass in eight of his nine starts this season. He has enough weapons to provide fantasy owners with QB2 production but doesn't bring much upside to the table. To add depth to the roster in the wake of Mallett's injury the team signed Thad Lewis, while rookie Tom Savage presumably takes over the backup role behind Fitzpatrick.

Injury Ryan Mallett out for the season
Pectoral injury

Quarterback Ryan Mallett is out for the season with a torn right pectoral muscle that will require surgery, according to two familiar with the situation. (Houston Chronicle)

FFToday's Take: Mallett reportedly played through the injury on Sunday. We haven't received an official word on who the Texans will start at quarterback in Week 13 against Tennessee but it's likely to be Ryan Fitzpatrick. Rookie Tom Savage is also on the roster

Arian Foster expected to play versus Browns
Groin seems okay, but Alfred Blue still a smart add
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Nov 11, 9:40 am

Houston Texans
The Texans should be in good shape physically when they play at Cleveland on Sunday. Cornerback Johnathan Joseph passed the concussion protocol and will start against the Browns. “He was out there today, and he looked good,” coach Bill O’Brien said after practice. The only player the Texans know they’ll be missing is cornerback Kareem Jackson, who suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee against Philadelphia and could miss three games. “The players I mentioned last week are still day-to-day,” O’Brien said. That means running back Arian Foster, inside linebacker Brian Cushing and outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney. Foster and Cushing are expected to play. No one has any idea about Clowney, who continues to experience soreness in his knee. (Houston Chronicle)

FFToday's Take: The Texans are dealing with some important defensive injuries and have benched Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of the strong-armed Ryan Mallett, who makes his first NFL start. It's hard to say how much the Texans will use Foster in Week 11, so Alfred Blue makes an interesting flex option, and both Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins remain must-play WRs in 12-team leagues.

Texans make switch at QB, Mallett to start Week 11
Ryan Fitzpatrick benched
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 5, 11:45 am

Houston Texans
Ryan Mallett is the Texans’ new starting quarterback. Coach Bill O’Brien named Mallett the starter Wednesday, after debating during recent days whether to make a change. The first-year coach acknowledged the decision to bench veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick was "very difficult." (Houston Chronicle)

FFToday's Take: Fitzpatrick will be the backup in Week 11 with Tom Savage operating as the No. 3 quarterback. Fitzpatrick has completed 62 percent of his passes for 1960 yards, 11 TDs and 8 INTs in nine games. The Texans are 4-5 and looking for a spark. For now, consider Mallett a QB2 until he shows consistency with Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans mulling quarterback change?
HC looking for a "spark" for struggling offense
By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 3, 2:35 pm

Houston Texans
Following a 31-21 defeat to the Eagles on Sunday at NRG Stadium and another inconsistent showing from the offense, Texan HC Bill O’Brien didn’t come close to benching Ryan Fitzpatrick. But the first-year coach did say every position will be evaluated and he’s looking for a “spark” to ignite a stalled unit. O’Brien said if anyone is at fault, it’s the coach and play-caller. “If the blame is pinpointed anywhere, the blame is pinpointed here,” O’Brien said. “I’ve got to do a better job of getting these guys pointed in the right direction.” (Houston Chronicle)

FFToday's Take: O'Brien committed to Fitzpatrick as the starter early on in the offseason, but he was not signed to be the long-term answer in Houston. Ryan Mallett is waiting in the wings and could be on the verge of making his first career start sometime this season, perhaps as soon as after Houston's Week 10 bye. While he lacks Fitzpatrick's vast experience, there are no questions about his ability to throw downfield.
