2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
Reggie Bush was everything the Lions hoped he would be when they signed him in the previous offseason. He provided a big-play threat at the running back position—displaying dazzling tackle-breaking ability and sure hands—on his way to 1,000-plus yards rushing and more than 500 yards receiving. Bush stayed relatively healthy, playing in 14 games, but missed parts of others with nagging lower-body injuries. In an effort to keep Bush fresh, the Lions utilized Joique Bell in a similar role. Fantasy owners and Lions coaches soon realized that the fundamentally sound Bell could be trusted as a runner and receiver. With Bell signed to an extension, and a familiar system in the works, expect Bush's carry numbers to drop but his receptions to rise as he slides into a Darren Sproles type of role in the offense. Bush should shine in PPR leagues, but barring a rash of injuries to the stable of Lions RBs, expect him to have a hard time approaching his top-10 finish of 2013, becoming more of an RB2/3 option.

Comment: Bush had the best fantasy season of his career in 2013. It's not likely to be duplicated but he's still on the RB2/3 radar.

Can Theo Riddick become the next Sproles?
Backup QB believes Riddick will catch 50 passes in 2014
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 7, 3:40 pm

Detroit Lions
Who takes the role of Darren Sproles - the shifty, multifaceted running back who can run the ball and make plays as a receiver in the open field - in Detroit? Backup QB Dan Orlovsky has an idea. His bold prediction: Theo Riddick will catch at least 50 passes. “This kid, he wasn’t covered a single time in OTAs and minicamp,” Orlovsky said. "If he doesn’t have 50 catches this year, I’ll be surprised. He’s going to have opportunities and he’s really talented at it.” (Detroit Free Press)

FFToday's Take: With two very adept receivers ahead of him in Reggie Bush and Joique Bell, Riddick appears to be a longshot to fulfill Orlovsky's prediction. However, New OC Joe Lombardi saw the three-back system work well in New Orleans and is reportedly installing the same offense in Detroit that the Saints use. Bush also stated earlier in the offseason that Riddick is a more complete back now that he was at the same age. Riddick has the skill set to be fantasy-relevant in 2014.

More snaps for RB Theo Riddick in 2014
Reggie Bush understudy receives praise from mentor
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Jun 9, 10:46 am

Detroit Lions
The shifty running back out of Notre Dame was drafted last season to be Reggie Bush's understudy. During his rookie season, Theo Riddick played just 49 snaps -- carrying the ball nine times for 25 yards and catching only four passes for 26 yards. Under new coordinator Joe Lombardi, Riddick could see increased snaps playing the Darren Sproles role from the New Orleans Saints' offense. (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: Riddick is going to have a hard time being fantasy relevant in re-draft leagues without an injury to Bush but he's a name to file away or take a flier on late in your draft. "He's far more advanced now compared to where I was as a rookie," said Bush. "I wasn't as good of a natural runner, it took me a couple years to get to that point and he already kinda has that. So, I'm sure you'll see him used a lot in the passing game this year and the running game."
