2014 Outlook
Depth Chart
It was another tremendous fantasy season for tight end Vernon Davis in 2013 as the freakish talent destroyed most expectations, finishing as the No. 2 fantasy tight end, only behind Jimmy Graham. Davis' 850 yards were accompanied by 13 touchdown receptions, the second time in his career that he has reached that number. Those who believed that Davis would see a massive drop in production with Kaepernick behind center as opposed to Alex Smith, who has practically made a career of throwing the ball underneath coverage, could not have been more wrong. Davis' end zone numbers totals cannot be oversold. Davis caught 62 percent of Kaepernick's touchdown passes a tremendous number for a player at any position, let alone tight end. Although he disappointed fantasy owners in 2012 when he failed to reach 600 yards and scored only five touchdowns, Davis has been a consistently elite fantasy option at the tight end position for the past five seasons. During that span, he has averaged nearly nine touchdowns and over 800 yards per season. With a healthy Michael Crabtree and the addition of Steve Johnson, Davis may not get as many looks as he did in 2013, but his tremendous ability in the red zone keeps him in the top tier of fantasy tight ends coming into the season. He is one of the few tight ends who is capable of putting up low-end WR1 numbers and thus should not be overlooked on draft day.

Comment: No holdout. Davis wants a new deal, but has reported to camp.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Vernon Davis unsure if he'll play Monday night
No setbacks in practice
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 11, 10:00 pm

San Francisco
Tight end Vernon Davis made it through practice Saturday, the third straight day he did so without any setback from a back injury he suffered two games ago. I dont feel like Im where I need to be at the moment, Davis said Saturday, but Im getting there. He said he will huddle with the head athletic trainer on Sunday and decide whether he is healthy enough to play against the St. Louis Rams on Monday night. (San Francisco Mercury News)

FFToday's Take: Vance McDonald and Derek Carrier would fill-in if Davis doesn't play. The fact that Davis didn't have any setbacks this week is a good sign, but he is no sure thing to suit up Monday night and we may not know his status before the early games kick off today.

Injury McDonald, Carrier to handle TE duties for 49ers
Vernon Davis misses practice all week
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 4, 7:00 am

San Francisco
Tight end Vernon Davis, right offensive tackle Anthony Davis and cornerback Tramaine Brock are not at practice Friday. Fortunately for the 49ers, backup tight end Vance McDonald (knee) is at practice for the third straight day. Its likely that McDonald and Derek Carrier are going to get the bulk of the action at tight end Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. (San Jose Mercury News)

FFToday's Take: Davis hasn't officially been ruled out but he's a candidate for the Inactive list after not practicing at all this week. Neither Carrier or McDonald will be recommended fantasy plays against the Chiefs.

Injury Vernon Davis optimistic he will return Week 4
"It's going to be a great week for me"
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Sep 23, 4:00 pm

San Francisco
Vernon Davis' crutches were gone, and so was his limp, as he looked ready Tuesday to return to a 49ers team that historically can't win without him. An ankle injury kept the typically durable Davis out of last Sunday's 23-14 collapse at Arizona. (San Jose Mercury News)

FFToday's Take: The 49ers waived practice squad tight end Asante Cleveland which is good sign that Davis and/or Vance McDonald (knee) will be available in Week 4.

Injury Not looking good for TE Vernon Davis
Ankle injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 21, 9:00 am

San Francisco
Its doubtful 49ers star TE Vernon Davis (bruised ankle) will play today vs. #Cardinals Im told. He was on crutches until Thursday. (Ian Rapaport via Twitter)

FFToday's Take: This has been the feeling all along this week. With Davis out and backup TE Vance McDonald battling a knee injury, third-string tight end Derek Carrier will likely draw the start and be a TE2 in Week 3.
