2016 Outlook
Depth Chart
Undrafted in most fantasy leagues a season ago, Chris Johnson became an important fantasy option once Andre Ellington went down with an injury early in the season. Johnson stepped into the starting role, helping the Cardinals establish a viable rushing attack to go along with one of the league’s most electric passing games. Johnson compiled 814 rushing yards in 11 games before going down with an injury of his own, leading the way for David Johnson to truly breakout. At 31 years old once the season starts, “CJ2K” is not the burner he once was, but he was still quick enough to break off multiple 30-plus-yard rushes a season ago. He’s a late round handcuff and he’ll start the season as the backup to David Johnson, but is one injury away from once again being a major fantasy asset.

Goodwin: Chris and David Johnson "even" as runners
Cards OC says both RBs will get carries, DJ has receiving edge
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Aug 2, 12:31 pm

Arizona Cardinals
Like last year, David Johnson will be used heavily in the passing game, often lining up as a receiver. In Sunday's practice, he caught two passes from those formations. “I think David is a little more comfortable (than Chris Johnson) in the passing game,” offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin said. “I think B.A. has certain things in mind with David, slotted out in formations, out of the backfield. He gives you a little different element from Chris. “But running the ball, they are both even.” (Arizona Republic)

FFToday's Take: It looks like David is the clearly more valuable back because of his edge in the passing game, though it's unclear how the carried will be split. If you were looking for a clear mandate for starter David Johnson as a workhorse in his sophomore campaign, you'll have to keep looking.

David Johnson the "unquestioned No. 1 RB" in AZ
Over 1,000 total yards as rookie despite making only five starts
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 18, 5:00 pm

Arizona Cardinals
During a roundtable discussion on azcardinals.com, beat writer Darren Urban discussed the running back situation in Arizona: "I don't know how anybody would suggest otherwise at this point (that David Johnson is the unquestioned No. 1 RB in Arizona. They did bring back Chris Johnson in an upset ... but David Johnson is the guy this organization absolutely loves." (azcardinals.com)

FFToday's Take: Among first-round fantasy picks over the last few years, only C.J. Anderson comes to mind as a back whose touches are supposedly in limbo after such a dominant second half of the season the year before. Urban projected earlier in the offseason Johnson would receive 60 percent of the touches in the Arizona backfield, which sounds about right. While Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington may few more touches than DJ owners want, he's a strong bet to live up to his draft status.
