C.J. Spiller

C.J. Spiller & Fred Jackson: The Chargers run defense will be tested by the run-heavy Bills in Week 3.

Grab a Helmet

Fred Jackson/C.J. Spiller vs SD: Man, there are Buffalo Bills players all over the Shot Callers report these last two weeks! Here we feature the tandem of Jackson and Spiller. After two weeks we have a rough idea of what the breakdown will be with these two backs, and it seems to be about 15 touches each. On any given week that gives each of them enough value in a flex, or low end RB2 spot, but this week could have the makings of more. San Diego plays sound defense, but they have given up 4.7 ypc to Ellington and Lynch the last two weeks. The Bills weekly game plan seems to be run, run and run some more, so don’t be shocked if both of these guys find the end zone this week in what should be a scrappy game in Orchard Park.

Joique Bell and Reggie Bush v GB: Whether it was play design or the stingy Carolina defense, the Lions running backs were a near non-factor last week in their road loss. This Sunday the Leos head back to the confines of Fort Field to take on division rival Green Bay. Last week in their 24-7 loss to the Panthers, Bell and Bush combined for only 24 touches, 129 yards and no scores. In a 40-10 win last season at home against the Pack, Bush and Bell combined for an eye popping 49 touches, 310 yards and 2 scores! If this new Lions staff has any semblance of a clue, they’ve watched that game, and will dial up a similar game play this week. Bush is a matchup nightmare for the Packer linebackers, and Bell should find some room inside the tackles against a defense giving up the second-most rushing yards in the league. Get these guys in your line-ups this week as strong RB2 plays.

Chris Ivory v. CHI (Mon): We now have two weeks in a books, and a better picture of the identities of offenses and defenses. We know the Jets are going with the Ground and Pound plan of years past, and that Chicago can be pounded on the ground (giving up the 5th worst ypc average in the league at 5.3). The Jets could be without their only threat in the passing game as Eric Decker deals with a hamstring injury. Ivory has shown more pop in the run game than Chris Johnson, so look for the Jets to ride Ivory as they work to keep the prolific Bear passing game on the sideline. There won’t be many chances to get a Jet’s skill player in your lineup, but this should be the week.

Grab Some Pine

Montee Ball @ SEA: I was strong in this spot last week with my recommendations, so I’m going to take a real risk this week and temper my expectations for Montee Ball. Chances are you drafted Ball to be your RB1 and he just hasn’t been that the first two weeks. I understand he is still rounding into form after missing most of the preseason, but the Bronco’s run blocking just hasn’t been good enough. Now Denver has to go into the great Northwest to try and shed the nightmares of the Super Bowl. Seattle is going to be a loud, angry place to play, and the ‘Hawks are playing stout defense against the run, allowing only 181 yards and 1 touchdown through two games. Don’t flat out bench him, but don’t expect much better than low end RB2 numbers.

Toby Gerhart v. IND: Since I’m not versed in Shot Caller etiquette, I’ll have to ask Joseph if it’s acceptable to just keep the same player in this spot on a permanent basis. So until I hear otherwise, Toby Gerhart once again should be out of your fantasy lineup. Running on a bad wheel, behind a line that doesn’t even give the common courtesy of a “look out” block, Gerhart is not even a top 50 back in most formats, and I just don’t see that changing anytime soon. Until further notice, this is Gerhart’s spot to lose!

Steven Jackson v. TB (Thu): While he’s averaged a respectable 4.2 yards per carry this season, Jackson has yet to find the end zone, and simply doesn’t offer the Falcon’s offense enough big play potential in the run game. Besides facing a stingy Bucs defense that is allowing only 3.7 ypc, this may be the week the Falcons give more run to intriguing rookie Devonta Freeman. Jackson just simply might not be worth much more than a FLEX start this week.
