Start 'Em:
Wide Receivers Who Will Outperform
Relative To Their Draft Position And Recent Hype
Tony Scheffler @ NYJ
Tight Ends have had success against the Jets this season, most
recently Ben Watson’s 8 catches / 88 yards / TD in Week 11. Scheffler
was held to 1 catch for 12 yards last week against the Raiders
after having 92 yards receiving the week prior. He is due: his
2 TDs this season came in the same Week 2 game vs. San Diego.
Cutler loves to throw the long play action pass to him and the
two will look to get it rolling this week at the Meadowlands.
Lee Evans vs. SF
After being held off the stat sheet in Week 11, Evans bounced
back last week with his 4th 100-yard game of the season. TDs remain
elusive with Trent Edwards at the helm, but Lee has a good shot
to score this week against a 49ers team that has given up 11 passing
plays of 40+ yards and 18 aerial scores this season. In his only
other career game against SF, Evans snagged 8 balls for 92 yards
and 2 TDs.
Bernard Berrian vs. CHI
Berrian has just 6 catches and 1 TD in his last 3 games, but only
the Chargers and the Seahawks have given up more passing yards
than the Bears this season. Players love burning old teams –
Berrian proved that in Week 7 when he had 6 catches for 81 yards
and a TD against his former Bears teammates. Look for similar
numbers again this week.
Antonio Bryant vs. NO
Bryant has established himself as a top target of Jeff Garcia
with 23 catches for 267 yards and 2 scores in his last 4 games.
He is on pace to set a career high in receptions and should be
looked to early and often against a Saints team that plays like
dirt on the road. New Orleans has served up 18 aerial TDs and
allows an average of 235 passing YPG.
Hines Ward @ NE
I really like Hines to bounce back after his 1-catch game last
week. The Pats are tough to run on and in all likelihood Ben will
be throwing to his go-to receiver. After scoring 5 TDs in his
first 6 games this season, Psycho Ward has gone 5 consecutive
games without a TD. This should add up to a solid game for Ward
against a Pats team that has given up 19 passing TDs – 2nd
highest total in the NFL.
Bench 'Em:
Wide Receivers Who Will Under Perform
Relative To Their Draft Position And Recent Hype
Braylon Edwards vs. IND
Braylon has killed fantasy owners (and the Browns) with dropped
passes this season and doesn’t even look like the same receiver
we saw score 16 TDs last year. He’s got a special talent
that makes him tough to bench; but he is faced with a difficult
matchup against the Colts who have given up an NFL-best 4 passing
TDs. If you have a better option - don’t hesitate.
Santana Moss vs. NYG
Moss is a frustrating guy to own because can dazzle and disappoint
from week to week. He started the season with 19 catches and 3
TDs in his first 3 games but has cooled of considerably with just
2 TDs in his last 8 games. The Giants defense, 5th in the NFL
with 32 sacks, isn’t likely to get burned deep. Moss should
end up with 4 or 5 catches for 60 yards.
Marques Colston @ TB
Colston only had 1 catch – but he made it count – a 70 yard touchdown
against the Packers last week. It was his first touchdown in 6
games this season. Marques has some things working against him
this week. Lance Moore seems to have supplanted him as Drew Brees’
favorite target; Reggie Bush’s possible return means Colston will
lose some targets to him. Finally, the Buccaneers defense has
given up an average of 174.6 YPG.
Isaac Bruce @ BUF
Reverend Ike resurrected himself last week, catching 8 passes
for 125 yards and his first TD since Week 5. Silly to get carried
away here though; in the 4 weeks prior Bruce averaged 2.25 catches
and 32 yards per game. 49ers QBs have been spreading it around
all season and a cold rain could be a factor in Orchard Park,
NY on Sunday.
