We begin the “Buzz” this week with a question: What
will be talked about more around the country this morning- the Eagles’
56-point explosion on Sunday or what they wore while accomplishing
it? In the occasion that you just follow the games mostly online,
check out the Eagles uniforms from today sometime. Yikes. I’m
all for throwback stuff, but there’s got to be a line that
you just can’t cross. But, enough about fashion….let’s
talk fantasy football and the hottest topics on the front burner
this Monday morning.
1. What’s Wrong With My Running Backs?
It’s been a strange year so far for running games in general.
While passing games have thrived in the NFL through three weeks,
many ground attacks have been, well, grounded. In today’s
games, only eleven teams ran the ball more than they passed it
and over 60% of all TDs came via the air. Will this trend continue?
Well, usually the rushing goes up as the temperature goes down,
so don’t panic….unless you’ve got one of these
guys:
Laurence
Maroney - Yes, I know he got 100 yards today, but the Patriots
seem to have no interest in running him near the goal line. They’d
rather throw a short pass to Randy Moss or Ben Watson or let Sammy
Morris punch it in. If you think fantasy owners are down on Mike
Shanahan, ask Maroney owners what they think of Belicheck.
Rudi Johnson
- Seventeen carries for nine yards is bad enough, but now Johnson
is apparently hurt after pulling a hamstring in Sunday’s game.
Rudi has been a rock of consistency in recent years, but his yards
per carry are becoming a big concern. Even if he is able to return
to action soon, I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing more
of Kenny Watson.
Frank Gore
- I know some will disagree with this inclusion, but the fact
of the matter is, the 49ers aren’t scaring anybody with their
passing game and they’re loading up to stop Gore at the line of
scrimmage. And, how bad is Vernon Davis hurt? If he’s out for
a while, teams might even bring a ninth man into the box to contain
Gore. If nobody fears your ability to throw downfield, your run
game is going to suffer.
2. Should I Keep Riding This Horse Or Look To
Sell?
You drafted this guy in the middle rounds thinking he might be
a good bye week fill-in or a marginal starter and instead he’s
getting harder and harder to keep out of the lineup. Or, you drafted
a high-risk player and so far, he’s been terrific…but
will he keep it going?
LaMont Jordan - Exhibit A. Three games….350 yards rushing.
That’s 117 yards per game. Remember, two of those games
were against the Lions and Browns and the other against the Broncos
(great vs. the pass, weak vs. the run). I would sell Jordan now
as I don’t think his value will ever get higher, but make
sure you get a top tier guy for him. He’s earned that kind
of exchange through three weeks.
Kevin Curtis
- No player will have as much “buzz” surrounding him this Monday
as does Mr, Curtis after 200+ yards and 3 TDs vs. Detroit yesterday.
The tendency when a player has a game like that is to look to
sell, but I think that would be a mistake. Here are the facts:
The Eagles throw the ball more than anyone else. Reggie Brown
is not a #1 receiver. L.J. Smith is hurt. Brian Westbrook keeps
teams honest with his various talents. McNabb has targeted Curtis
in all three weeks quite a bit…he just wasn’t very accurate in
the first two games. Keep riding Curtis in the weeks to come as
a solid #2 fantasy wide out; I think more often than not, you’ll
reap the rewards.
Randy Moss
- I got some e-mails last week from Buzz readers who said that
Randy Moss belonged in the same company as Steve Smith and Chad
Johnson after two weeks. Hey, you might be right. Moss’s value
right now is through the roof. Do you trade Moss for an elite
or at least semi-elite ball carrier at this point? It really depends
on the make-up of your team, but I would say keep riding Moss
in most cases. He and Brady may be heading for a special season
together. Fun numbers: Brady is on pace for 53 TD passes, Moss
for 27 TD receptions. I wouldn’t mess with that.
3. Now This Is The Player I Drafted!- Right?
The patient owner got rewarded this week when guys like Donovan
McNabb, Ronnie Brown, and Tony Gonzalez got rolling for the first
time this season. So, who are some guys who have started somewhat
slowly but should break out in Week Four?
Willis McGahee - McGahee has been good in terms of yardage totals,
but he’s not scoring TDs on the ground. That will change
next week vs. the Browns. Willis is the player most likely to
have fantasy owners buzzing one week from today.
Marvin
Harrison - I know you think I’m nuts here given that the Colts
play Denver next weekend, but my guess is that Champ Bailey is
going to be covering the bigger, more physical Reggie Wayne. I
expect Harrison to begin a run next week that will culminate in
him being near the top of the receiver mountain at the halfway
point of the season.
4. Will The High Scoring Continue?
Nope. The Bye Weeks have officially arrived. You’re going
to have to start plugging players in your lineups this upcoming
week that have spent the year to date riding pine. Look for scores
to be a little more down to earth. Although, the Browns and Eagles
have both scored 50+ the past two weeks, so anything’s possible.
Before we shut it down for now, here are some hot topic questions
that get honorable mention this week:
1. Is Lee Evans amongst the living?
2. Where can I get a Jon Kitna Fathead?
3. Can Kurt
Warner be QB from now on? (Anquan Boldin owners want to know)
4. How many TDs can Steelers tight ends score this year? (Hot
topic for Parker owners)
5. That was Steve
Smith of the Giants that was out of action Sunday, right?
Be sure to check on injuries this morning as there seemed to
be some significant losses as of this article going to the presses.
Also, for those of you wondering how the heck Larry Johnson didn’t
make the list of RBs to be worried about….be patient. Much
better match-ups await. I just hope you’re not 0-4 when
they do roll around. The Buzz is done for today - if you’ve
got Brees, Bush, McAllister, or Colston…may this be a big
night for you… good luck and God Bless!
