Ironically enough, my favorite week of the fantasy season to track
is Week 2. I know that most people would say that Week 1 is by far
the most anticipated, but in Week 2, we often see sanity restored…
or we see the beginning of trends, both good and bad. Either way,
our job here at the Buzz is to help you see it the way we see it.
We’ve got a lot to cover this week, so let’s get started!
Monday Night Star: Hopefully you didn't
go to bed early because if you did, you missed a show.
Steal of the Draft
Anyone else see a little vintage 2007 from Tom Brady these first
two games? Brady’s surge right out of the gate (750+ yards,
7 TDs, 0 INTs) is making those who took him midway through their
draft look like geniuses. Sunday’s performance was especially
impressive given that it was against Buffalo- the same Buffalo
that gave Andrew Luck fits the week before. The questions surrounding
New England that readers probably want to know right now are threefold:
First, can Tom keep this up? Yes and No. Against fearsome run
defenses the Pats will continue to go pass-heavy and Brady’s
numbers will soar. Secondly, what am I to make of Dion Lewis?
Again, Lewis’s usage vs. that of LeGarrette Blount (my apologies
if you started him on Sunday) will depend on game plan, so study
the matchup for the week. Finally, is Julian Edelman going to
produce like a WR1 all year long? On pass-heavy game plan week-
you bet.
Set Adrift on Memory Bliss…
What got set adrift were the values of a few running backs who
left Week 2 with a lot of questions about their future roles in
their respective offenses. Waiver wires will be going crazy this
week as people pursue Matt Jones as a viable alternative on a
team that appears to be more than capable of running it down people’s
throats. Where does that leave Alfred Morris? Both backs look
great so far, but a timeshare is brewing unless one of the backs
begins to have ball security issues. Speaking of ball security,
that’s what got Jeremy Hill in trouble on Sunday as he fumbled
twice and then sat the bench, giving Giovani Bernard an opportunity
to shine (120-plus yards rushing). Bernard is talented, but he’s
not built for big workloads, so look for Hill to bounce back strong
in Week 3. Lastly, Justin Forsett’s value took a hit when
he was pulled at the goaline for Lorenzo Taliaferro. I still think
Forsett is a solid RB2 moving forward, but if you’ve got
him as your RB1, you’re going to need to think about a trade
to solidify that position. He will almost certainly continue to
get vultured.
Here’s to You, Mr. Robinson…
We mentioned the restoration of sanity that occurs in Week 2.
That happened in the case of Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson,
and Odell Beckham, Jr. among others. It also happened on a prognostic
level as many predicted Allen Robinson to be a breakout player
in 2015 only to seek him lay a huge fantasy football egg in Week
1. I sincerely hope you didn’t overreact and put him on
your bench…but I know many did. For those that stuck with
Robinson, he rewarded with 150-plus yards and 2 TDs. So, what
does the future hold? Probably more ups and downs…but at
least the “ups” are now verifiable. Fantasy nation
turns its lonely eyes to you…
The Most Famous Crockett Since Davy
Just Might Be…
Crockett Gillmore! Gillmore’s two touchdown game alongside
the 150-yard effort from Steve Smith, Sr. signifies something
we suspected coming into this season. Who else is Joe Flacco supposed
to throw to? Until Breshad Perriman returns (and even then, it’s
not a given), Flacco really only has two possibilities in terms
of completing passes down the field. That makes Steve Smith more
valuable in forthcoming games and makes Gillmore now a guy you
must go out and get this week if you drafted someone like Josh
Hill or Zach Ertz, thinking they would be a borderline starter.
Flacco’s fantasy obituary was composed and circulated after
Week 1, but the truth is that the Broncos defense is going to
be a nasty one all year for QBs to deal with. Don’t give
up on Flacco. Don’t start a QB vs. Denver. Lessons learned.
Moving right along…
Were those guys the Oakland Raiders?
Yes, I know Terrell Suggs wasn’t around to apply any pressure
to Derek Carr, but how often do we have the opportunity at the
Buzz to give love to the Oakland Raiders offense? Two wide receivers
over 100 yards? Over 300 yards from Carr? 80-plus yards and a
TD from Latavius Murray? None of those questions represent falsehoods
and while we still think the Raiders defense stinks, the offense
looks like it’s going to turn some heads and change some
perceptions moving forward. As long as Carr stays healthy, Amari
Cooper becomes a must in terms of getting him in your weekly lineup
and his ability to stretch the field should do wonders for Murray’s
value as well. Heck, even Michael Crabtree looked reborn on Sunday
in this offense. But, while one Murray found a way to shine, another
Murray…well…
The DeMarco Demise
I don’t know if it’s a square peg in a round hole
or what, but DeMarco Murray and the Eagles offensive line do not
appear to be in synch in any way, shape, or form. If not for having
secured a role in the passing game, Murray would be the bust of
the fantasy season so far, having rushed for only 11 yards in
two games on 21 carries. That’s not good. It may be that
the Eagles took on too many changes all at once and will begin
to put it together over time, but if I were a Murray owner, I
would be worried. They need a deep threat to make defenses more
honest, but Nelson Agholor looks completely overwhelmed through
two games. What’s left is a guy whose point totals so far
may not be all that different from guys like Marshawn Lynch and
LeSean McCoy, but are different based on inability to gain positive
yardage running the ball. Here’s a crazy thought. Why not
try to trade for Murray this week? His value will never be lower
and I do think the Eagles will figure the problem out.
For Those Who Handcuffed Le’Veon Bell
with DeAngelo Williams…
We salute you. Williams is fantasy football’s top scoring
running back through two weeks and your drafting of Bell cost
you nothing. Now, you get the best back in the league (fantasy-wise)
coming back on a truly dynamic offense. And, you get a proven
handcuff whose fantasy value should remain high. DeAngelo is no
longer built for the grind that comes with being a lead back for
a full season, but he very well may have been the MVP of the fantasy
football world in Weeks 1 an2. When Martavis Bryant returns, the
Steelers could be darn near unstoppable. Hang on to Bryant. Hang
on to Williams. Keep riding Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown.
This train is flying down the track.
Wait a Minute...Wasn't Andrew Luck
Supposed to Carry My Team This Season?
I know there are some of you reading this and asking this very
question. Luck and Aaron Rodgers were supposed to be can't miss,
in a tier all their own, but Luck has certainly missed that mark
through two weeks. So, what gives? For one, he has played a couple
of elite defenses. Second, he has been consistently rushed in
the pocket. Third, Andre Johnson isn't getting any separation
from the corners. So, all will be well when those issues get fixed,
right? I'm not so sure. The situation between the coach and GM
seems to be dragging the team down. Our advice at the Buzz is
to sit tight with Luck as his value at present doesn't reflect
his immense talent. But, understand the problems he and the Colts
are having are complex and may not get fixed for several more
weeks. I feel your pain, but as was noted with DeMarco Murray,
you can't get off the ride just yet. After all, both Luck and
Murray were the best at their respective positions last season.
They haven't forgotten how to play football at an elite level.
They're just having to make some adjustments. You paid too much
for them to abandon ship yet.
That's a wrap for the Buzz this week. Where the season goes from
here is anybody's guess, but whatever does take place in Week
3 will be passed on to you next Tuesday. We live in a world where
Oakland scored more than five times the number of points that
the Colts did this week. Chew on that while you're serving Adam
Vinatieri his walking papers. Til' next week!
