Can't Draft, Can't Coach
9/11/03

Week one of the fantasy season saw me take my off-the-rack team and snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. Let's review my Mike Martz-like performance:

Start Kelly Holcomb or Steve McNair? Why, Holcomb, of course. I shrewdly determined he would carve up an awful Indianapolis defense. Holcomb earned me a useful 7 points.

Start Chris Chambers or Donald Driver? I chose Driver, up against Minnesota, over Fiedler-to-Chambers. Result: complete disaster, and two points.

Is Curtis Martin back? Well, how did his backup score more points (6 to 4) when Jordan totalled ZERO yards? You tell me.

Welcome to Week one of the Fantasy Team of Destiny. The above management gaffes cost me 38 points and an easy win. Instead, I am in last place after a twelve point loss. So what if I am tied with 6 other teams and am only one game out of first. It's time to panic.

During this week's waiver period, I tried to pick up Ladell Betts and Tim Brown. I succeeded to getting Brown, and have dropped Driver. Am I nuts? Driver was the first receiver I drafted. I also resisted trade overtures for Chambers and Duckett for a spot higher on the waiver line and a chance at Betts. I am going to vigorously check trades with other owners this week and see if I can't upgrade the receiving corps. I will let you know the results next week.

So, to recap week one:
Holcomb, 7 pts.
Portis, 27 pts.
Martin, 4 pts.
Driver, 2 pts.
Muhammad, 7 pts.
Gonzalez, 1 pt.
Wilkins, 7 pts.
Buccaneers, 0 pts.

Total: 55 pts, lost game 67-55.

See you next week to determine if I have any chance in this league or if I have to actually focus on work.
