Scouting Profiles
11/17/05

Dynasty league owners, NFL draft fans, or those of you that want to get an early jump on the next crop of rookies for your fantasy draft, The Gut Check is providing scouting profiles on NFL prospects—college juniors and seniors. The profiles include:

  • An overall weighted score for the position on a 100-point scale

  • Position specific criteria broken down into key components

  • Game day stats

  • Analysis and commentary of each key component based on film study of the prospect’s performance in live action

  • Analysis and commentary of overall strengths and weaknesses based on film study

  • Game day examples of that player’s strengths and weaknesses
The Gut Check isn’t claiming he’ll always be accurate in his assessments but you’ll at least have information that is based on actual film-study and not just regurgitated descriptions. In fact his approach is based on the philosophy shared by two of the NFL’s best personnel men of all-time:

Joe Thomas — Commissioner Pete Rozelle recommended Thomas to the Minnesota Vikings in the 1960’s as their first personnel manager. Thomas went against the grain and built a team around scrambling QB Fran Tarkenton. By the early 70’s Thomas was doing the same thing in Miami: drafting lesser-regarded Bob Griese over Heisman winner Steve Spurrier; trading for Paul Warfield; and picking Larry Csonka when most thought he was too slow to be a productive NFL runner. When the Dolphins met the Vikings in the Super Bowl, Thomas had drafted or acquired nearly all the starters on both teams!

Ron Wolf — Wolf, who credits Thomas as someone that he learned valuable lessons about the art of personnel decisions, was the driving force behind acquiring Brett Favre and building the Green Bay franchise into a Super Bowl Champion.

Although the Gut Check does not claim to have this kind of experience and acumen, he does approach evaluating fantasy prospects with their philosophy that physical dimensions and combine numbers take a backseat to a player’s skill as a football player. This approach has been the driving force behind The Gut Check’s accurate takes on such players as:

The reports are in Adobe Reader, a very common program on most PCs today and free to download if you don’t have it.

The following profiles have been made public thus far:

TE Joe Klopfensteine, Colorado
RB Tyrone Moss, Miami
RB Reggie McNeal, Texas A&M
RB DeAngelo Williams, Memphis
RB Kenneth Darby, Alabama
RB Mike Bell, Arizona
RB Brian Calhoun, Wisconsin
RB Michael Bush, Louisville
QB Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green

As the 2005 season continues, the Gut Check will provide reports on the draft eligible quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends in college football that will help you make the best decisions for your dynasty draft.
