Running Backs

  • Mikel Leshoure dropped from the list due to Achilles injury. Tough break for the rookie.
  • Jahvid Best (+5) moves up but not as much as you might think. Can’t envision the Lions giving him more than 220 carries this year.
  • Ricky Williams (+27) improves his fantasy stock after landing in Baltimore to back up Ray Rice.

Quarterbacks

Running Backs

Wide Receivers

  • Dwayne Bowe (-2) slides a couple spots. More weapons this season in the Chiefs passing game.
  • Johnny Knox (-3) is losing reps to Roy Williams (+20) in practice. Why doesn’t Martz play them at different positions?
  • Derrick Mason (-30) signing is basically Plaxico (-2) insurance. Mason goes from a starter to option #3.
  • Malcom Floyd (+12) resigns in SD and returns to a starting role.
  • Michael Crabtree (-3) can’t stay healthy and Braylon Edwards’ (+3) arrival is an ominous sign.

Tight Ends

  • Flip-flopped Rob Gronkowski (+6) and Aaron Hernandez (-6). It’s too bad these two have to share targets.
  • Jared Cook (+10) becomes Hasselbecks pass-receiving option now that Bo Scaife (-4) has moved on.
  • Travis Beckum (+21) takes a big leap as he becomes the starting tight end now that Kevin Boss (-5) has moved on to Oakland.
  • Ed Dickson (-3) may be the starter but it appears the Ravens like Dennis Pitta (+7) enough that he will share in the pass-receiving responsibilities.

Projections & Rankings Update – 8/4

Quarterbacks

  • Kyle Orton (+12) rises from the ashes as he runs well ahead of Tebow in camp. Trade to Miami, all but dead.
  • Jason Campbell (-100 yds), A banged up Ford and losing his top target (Miller) can’t help.

Running Backs

  • Beanie Wells (+4), gets first crack at starting job keeping him ahead of Ryan Williams.
  • LaDainian Tomlinson (-8), reduced role and salary has L.T. on the slide.
  • Shonn Greene (+75 yards), should get around 240-250 carries if he remains healthy.
  • Tim Hightower (+3), Torain already banged up. Hightower is next in line for starting job.
  • Thomas Jones (-5), could and should lose carries to Le’Ron McClain.
  • Jalen Parmele (+29), backing up Rice until the Ravens sign a veteran RB.
  • Ronnie Brown (-8), nice pickup for the Eagles, but not so nice for Brown’s fantasy value. Handcuff to McCoy.

Wide Receivers

  • DeSean Jackson (-2), working out the kinks as I ponder Jackson’s and Jeremy Maclin’s (+3) value.
  • Dez Bryant (+1) I keep bumping him up with up with every update. Kid’s got big upside.
  • Mike Williams (SEA) (-14), first Rice, now a pass-catcing TE; Williams is falling into a fantasy wasteland.
  • Patrick Crayton (+30), would start opposite Jackson if the Chargers played today.
  • Emmanuel Sanders (-8) Everyone’s sleeper wideout can’t get his feet healthy.

Tight Ends

  • Zach Miller (-16) Uggh. Moving to Seattle does nothing for Miller’s fantasy stock. Tarvaris Jackson and sharing targets with Carlson? No thanks.

Quarterbacks

  • Kevin Kolb (#20) comes to ARI as a QB2 with upside.
  • Kyle Orton (-7) slides as starting spots across the league dwindle and rumored MIA deal fizzles.
  • Vince Young (+15) lands in a good situation but has little fantasy value barring a Vick injury.

Running Backs

Wide Receivers

Tight Ends

  • Todd Heap (+3) gets a slight boost. Could be second-leading receiver in Arizona.
  • Ed Dickson (+15) gets a crack at the starting job in Baltimore.
  • Kellen Davis (+14) gets a crack at the starting job in Chicago but still fantasy irrelevant.
  • Greg Olsen (-6) will share targets with Jeremy Shockey in Carolina.

Quarterbacks

  • Matt Hasselbeck (+7) up slightly. Better value for him early in the season; as long as TEN stays in the race.
  • Donovan McNabb in Minnesota might be a good fit for the team but doesn’t get my fantasy juices flowing. No Sidney Rice means McNabb is QB2 at best.
  • Bump for Tarvaris Jackson (+30) as for some reason the Seahawks want him to be their starting QB.

Running Backs

Wide Receivers

Kickers

  • John Kasay dropped from the Rankings. He will be released by Carolina who just agreed with Olindo Mare on a 5-year deal. Seattle is looking for a new kicker.

Very few changes as we wait for the CBA to be completed. The calm before the storm…

Quarterbacks

Running Backs

  • Slight decrease in Willis McGahee’s rushing yardage (-100). Potential departure from Baltimore.
  • Slight increase in Le’Ron McClain’s rushing yardage (+100). May backup Rice if McGahee departs.
  • Flipped-flopped James Starks and Ryan Grant. It’s likely Grant’s job to lose.

Wide Receivers

Tight Ends

  • Tony Gonzalez (+50 yards).
  • Increase for Jermaine Gresham (+100 yds, 1 TD). Could become a crutch for rookie Dalton due to young receiving corps.

Quarterbacks

Running Backs

  • Flip-flopped the projections for Tashard Choice (+7) & DeMarco Murray (-7). The more I consume on the Cowboys backfield, the more I think Choice wins the playing time battle with the rookie.
  • Added John Kuhn (GB) and Alex Green (GB). Both had been projected but were left out in the last update.
  • Delone Carter (IND) up, Javarris James (IND) removed.
  • Slight decrease in Maurice Jones-Drew’s rushing yardage (-50) as I become increasingly skittish about his knee injury.
  • Added a TD to the rushing totals of Ryan Mathews (SD).

Wide Receivers

Tight Ends

  • Chris Cooley (-2) moves down until we get a better handle on who the QB is going to be.
  • James Casey (+8) ranked too low in previous update.

T.O. Ready to Play in August? Don’t Count On It

The T.O. Show is in it's final act.

I asked our resident athletic trainer, Bob Thompson, to give his analysis of T.O.’s mysterious ACL injury…

Injury: ACL tear and reconstruction
Healing Time: 6 months
Impact on the Field: More drama for this guy. Apparently T.O. injured his knee during a workout back in April. I have read a great deal on his injury because nothing seems to add up to me. Based on what his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has said, T.O. injured his knee in April, had surgery for a torn ACL, and will be ready by the start of camp, if there is one. The problem that I have is that the time frame doesn’t add up. If T.O. did have surgery in late April, he would not be ready for full contact until October. And that is the best-case scenario. Ask Wes Welker, Owen Daniels, or anyone else with this injury how it works out when they come back to competition within the same calendar year. When a player tears his ACL, he may have little difficulty in performing everyday activities, but he will experience significant problems when placed in an athletic event. T.O. was seen walking around at an event in late April without any noticeable problem. That makes me believe he had surgery sometime in late April or early June and that Rosenhaus is talking him up as ready for camp because he is unsigned. If he takes the field earlier than he should, he will be nowhere as good as he once was. He was already losing speed, and if he loses any more ability, he would become a possession receiver—if he is willing to run those short routes over the middle. As has been reported, he was never a big fan of those routes and I doubt he starts becoming one now.

With all respect to Drew Rosenhaus, I’d be shocked if Owens makes any kind of impact on the field in August or anytime this season.  Sure he’s known for being a freakishly quick healer but at this point in his career, who’s going to sign him? He’s already worn out his welcome in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas, Buffalo and Cincinnati. I’m sure Mr. Rosenhaus will do his job and land Owens a roster spot late in the season but make no mistake, the T.O. Show is in it’s final act.
