Grading Mock Draft #1

The Commish

Well Mock Draft #2 is right around the corner so it's about time that I got my lazy butt in gear and rated the first mock draft. It took place in May and included some of your favorites from the FF Today forums, a couple of my CCL guys and a couple of the expert friends of the FF Today site. We took our time getting the draft done and that affected the picks of some people because the draft did wear on. Many of us took some players at the end of the draft just to get it over with. Also, some guys were not around all the time so they didn't always get the guy they wanted. For instance I would have preferred Travis Prentice instead of Jonathon Linton but all in all I think everyone was happy with his team. One benefit of grading the draft this late after the mock... I have completely forgotten the reasons why some people took their players. On the other hand I am going to be a bit harder on other guys that took players like Steve Young that have since retired.

Before explaining my rankings I will let you know my rankings 1 through 12. You can go to the mock draft page to look at the rosters, round by round draft, and cheat sheets.

  1. Steve14
  2. Broncos Fan
  3. Capain Lou
  4. Commish
  5. Mike C.
  6. Dogpound
  7. EMoney
  8. Iceman
  9. Chronic
  10. [Echo]
  11. El Barton
  12. Don Golia
Every time I do these rankings I make the owners mad and I get e-mails telling me I am crazy. I don't think anyone did terribly in this draft and my point system was very close which made it difficult to differentiate many teams.

Starting with quarterbacks… I looked at all the teams and graded each quarterback on quality and potential for success this season. I then factored the round the quarterback was taken. My rankings were:

Q U A R T E R B A C K S
RANK MOCKER PLAYERS
1 Dogpound Kurt Warner, Jake Plummer
2 Commish Brett Favre, Steve McNair
3 BroncosFan Steve Beuerlein, Troy Aikman
4 EMoney Mark Brunell, Tony Banks
5 Chronic Rich Gannon, Cade McNown
6 Steve14 Brad Johnson, Kerry Collins
7 ICEMAN Jeff Blake, Chris Chandler
8 Don Golia Vinny Testaverde, Daunte Culpepper
9 El Barton Peyton Manning, Brian Griese
10 Mike C. Charlie Batch, Jon Kitna
11 Captain Lou Rob Johnson, Tim Couch
12 [Echo] Drew Bledsoe, Steve Young

I ranked Dogpound number one because he took Kurt Warner and Jake Plummer. He took Warner earlier than I certainly would have taken him. But nonetheless he paid for that later. I think Plummer will bounce back this year. Actually I think Plummer will have a great first 8 games but then fall back into mediocrity by the end of the year. I ranked myself second because I have Favre and McNair. I think I have better quarterbacks but ranked myself lower because I took the qb's too early and closely together. Instead of grading each owner let's look at lower couple of owners. I ranked Captain second to last because Johnson is injury prone and has never started a full season and Couch still doesn't have the weapons to be adequate back up for a starter such as Johnson. I ranked Echo last because Drew Bledsoe was taken so early (before Brad Johnson, Steve Beuerlein, Steve McNair, and Vinny Testaverde) and he also took Steve Young which promptly retired. I suppose that you can't blame him but had Young returned to the 49ers the talent still was going to be poor so why take him?

In the running back category here is how I ranked the teams:

R U N N I N G B A C K S
RANK MOCKER PLAYERS
1 Steve14 Fred Taylor, Curtis Enis, Richard Huntley, Mike Cloud
2 BroncosFan Eddie George, Jamal Anderson, Warrick Dunn, Travis Prentice
3 [Echo] Edgerrin James, Errict Rhett, Corey Dillon, Chris Warren
4 Dogpound Curtis Martin, Tim Biakabutuka, Jerome Bettis, Kimble Anders
5 Mike C. Dorsey Levens, Duce Staley, Antowain Smith, Shaun Alexander,
6 El Barton Jamal Lewis, Tyrone Wheatley, Olandis Gary, Priest Holmes
7 ICEMAN Ricky Williams, Charlie Garner, J.J. Johnson, Raymont Harris
8 Captain Lou Marshall Faulk, Robert Smith, Jermaine Fazande, Napolean Kaufman
9 Commish Emmitt Smith, Thomas Jones, Jonathan Linton, Leroy Hoard
10 EMoney Terrell Davis, Mike Alstott, J.R. Redmond, Donnell Bennett
11 Chronic Stephen Davis, Ron Dayne, Adrian Murrell, Skip Hicks
12 Don Golia James Stewart, Ricky Watters, Natrone Means, Shaun Bryson

I ranked Steve first easily. He drafted Fred Taylor, Curtis Enis, Richard Huntley, and Mike Cloud. This is a great haul…4 starters. It was very easy to rank him number one. Ranked number two was Broncos Fan. He took Eddie George, Jamal Anderson, Warrick Dunn, and Travis Prentice. This group could easily been first, I really like George, Anderson is suffering from tendonitis but looks to be able to come back, Dunn should benefit from a rejuvenated passing game, and Prentice a player that I think could turn out to be the best of the rookie runners. On the other end of the spectrum I ranked Chronic second from last for taking three Washington runners (Stephen Davis, Adrian Murrell and Skip Hicks) but he did get bonus points for taking Ron Dayne. I think the big dog could be a big runner for the Giants this season. I ranked Don last in this category for taking Ricky Watters, James Stewart (both guys that are asking for season ending injuries) Natrone Means, and Shaun Bryson. Means could turn out to be really great for him and so could Bryson…they better had.

My wide receivers rankings are:

W I D E  R E C E I V E R S
RANK MOCKER PLAYERS
1 Steve14 Jimmy Smith, Patrick Jeffers, Torry Holt, Rod Smith
2 Captain Lou Antonio Freeman, Eric Moulds, Johnnie Morton, Jerry Rice
3 EMoney Marcus Robinson, Michael Westbrook, Darnay Scott, Bill Schroeder
4 BroncosFan Kevin Johnson, Ed McCaffrey, Rocket Ismail, Carl Pickens
5 Mike C. Keyshawn Johnson, Germane Crowell, Keenan McCardell, Travis Taylor
6 Don Golia Marvin Harrison, Albert Connell, Derrick Alexander, Peerless Price
7 ICEMAN Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Herman Moore, Tim Dwight
8 Commish Tim Brown, Amani Toomer, Kevin Dyson, Troy Edwards
9 Dogpound Muhsin Muhammad, Terry Glenn, Wayne Chrebet, Curtis Conway
10 Chronic Joey Galloway, Peter Warrick, Sean Dawkins, Yancey Thigpen
11 [Echo] Cris Carter, Rob Moore, Jake Reed, Tony Martin
12 El Barton Isaac Bruce, Derrick Mayes, Terance Mathis, Qadry Ismail

Steve again tops the rankings here in this category by taking Jimmy Smith, Patrick Jeffers, Torry Holt, and Rod Smith. Smith doesn't do much for me but I like Smith, Jeffers and Holt to choose from each week. The second ranked wide receiver group went to the Captain. He took Antonio Freeman, Eric Moulds, Johnnie Morton, and Jerry Rice. Again I don't care for Rice but you can do a whole lot worse than choosing between Moulds, Freeman, and Morton each week. On the final two rungs of the ladder are Echo and El Barton. Echo took Cris Carter, Rob Moore, Jake Reed, and Tony Martin. Talk about an old group of guys…ancient is the correct term here. For El Barton he took Isaac Bruce (O.k….will the old injury prone Bruce return?), Derrick Mayes (will the slow Mayes return?), Terance Mathis (who keeps defenses honest and no double teams…Shawn Jefferson?), and Qadry Ismail (who is the real Qadry Ismail?).

The tight end, kicker, and defense rankings are difficult in fact I didn't rank kickers and defenses at all…other than giving you an idea of who would we take, we wouldn't need to take kickers or defenses at all! The tight end rankings are as follows:

T I G H T  E N D S
RANK MOCKER PLAYERS
1 Chronic Rickey Dudley, Cam Cleeland
2 [Echo] Stephen Alexander, Ken Dilger
3 Captain Lou Wesley Walls, Pete Mitchell
4 Mike C. Dave Moore, Byron Chamberlain
5 Commish Frank Wycheck, Anthony Becht
6 ICEMAN Tony Gonzalez, Kyle Brady
7 El Barton Bubba Franks, Luther Broughton
8 EMoney Jay Riemersma, Marcus Pollard
9 Steve14 Freddie Jones, Tony McGee
10 Don Golia Shannon Sharpe, Roland Williams
11 Dogpound David LaFleur, Christian Fauria
12 BroncosFan David Sloan, Andrew Glover

I ranked Chronic on top for taking Rickey Dudley who could eventually reach the potential that everyone says he has. The real reason I gave him the top nod was for remembering and taking Cam Cleeland. I think Cleeland and Saints offense could be one of the better in the NFC this year. I gave Echo the next slot for taking Ken Dilger and Stephen Alexander. Alexander is no longer a tight end secret and Dilger is an intricate part of the Colt offense. Dogpound got the 11th ranking for taking David LaFluer and Christian Fauria. Fauria has yet to do anything in his NFL career…including finish a season uninjured. LaFluer is fine but has yet to be outstanding. Broncos Fan took David Sloan and Andrew Glover neither of which do anything for me.

My rankings are nothing but personal choice and I would welcome any comments on your rankings. Next week we look at "living the fantasy."
